Goldilocks, unicorns and The Smurfs… who said #English economic terms were boring? Economics, finance and central banking: a serious business for sensible grown-ups who have long since put childish things behind them. Or is it? A casual glance through the pages of the financial press ("The Financial Times", say, or "The Economist") might suggest otherwise. The unsuspecting reader might even be forgiven for wondering if they have stumbled into a tale of the sort popularised by the Brothers Grimm or Charles Perrault. A bizarre universe populated by storybook characters (Goldilocks, The Smurfs), mythical beasts (unicorns) and fearsome creatures (zombies), not to mention a whole menagerie of animals (bears and bulls, hawks and doves, whales and gorillas, the list goes on…). You are perhaps familiar with the story of Goldilocks, the tale of a mischievous young girl who breaks into the home of a family of bears. She then proceeds to sample the bowls of porridge left on the table. She finds father bear’s porridge to be “too hot” and mother bear’s to be “too cold”, before announcing that the bowl left by baby bear is “just right”. But did you know that economists often refer to what they call a "Goldilocks economy"? By which they mean an economy that is not too hot (high inflation), and not too cold (sluggish growth), but rather – you guessed it – "just right": steady growth, stable prices and full employment. Meanwhile, a unicorn, as you well know, is a legendary creature that has for centuries been depicted as a celestial, horned beast, often symbolising purity or virtue. But not in the world of high finance. Here, a unicorn refers to a company (usually a start-up) valued at over $1 billion. Perhaps because, like their four-footed namesakes, they too are a rare sight indeed. And what about The Smurfs (or “Les Schtroumpfs”, in the original French)? Well, strange as it may seem, these adorable little blue creatures have lent their name to the rather less adorable practice of “smurfing”. This is the term used to refer to a money laundering technique whereby large, illicit sums are split into a series of smaller deposits, thus avoiding the unwanted attention of the authorities. Something that AMLA (the EU’s new anti-money laundering authority) will no doubt be keeping a close eye on. Interestingly, some European countries have now adapted this term in their own languages, based on the local name for the characters. So, for example, the French sometimes refer to "le schtroumpfage", while the Spanish talk of "el pitufeo" (after "Los Pitufos", as The Smurfs are known in Spain). Not such a serious business after all!

Here are a few clues to help you guess the language that will be in the spotlight in September. - This language belongs to the Germanic language family, but its vocabulary has been influenced by many others - A major historical event in 1066 left a lasting mark on the language, introducing thousands of new words that are still used today, particularly in areas such as law, cuisine and culture - It is famous for preserving spellings that often reflect how words were pronounced centuries ago rather than how they are spoken today - It has no official language academy regulating grammar or vocabulary, unlike many other EU languages - It often has several words for the same concept, inherited from different linguistic traditions

🌍 Irish geological wonder or portal to the Otherworld? Poll na bPéist is a naturally formed tidal pool, unusually shaped in an almost perfect rectangle. 🌊 Located on Inis Mór, an Irish-speaking island in Galway Bay, Poll na bPéist (or the Wormhole in English) is a breathtaking geological formation created by the Atlantic Ocean’s powerful waves. The name given to it by the island’s Irish-speaking population captures Ireland's rich history of folklore and storytelling found in many Irish place names and geographical features: “poll” ➡️ means hole or pool “péist”➡️ borrowed from the Latin “bestia” means a monster or beast In Irish mythology, you can reach An Saol Eile (the Otherworld), a realm of gods and spirits, by going under dark pools and lakes like Poll na bPéist. 🧌 Another place with links to Irish legend is Poll an Phúca, now a reservoir in the east of Ireland. “Púca” was used to describe a sprite or bogeyman, giving the place a foreboding tone. 🤔 So, is Poll na bPéist just a stunning formation on the very edge of Europe, was it once home to a hidden beast or is it a gate to another world...
