On my design wall this morning I have the Quilts for Kids kit that I received from Downy Touch of Comfort. For information on Quilts for Kids see their web page.

All of the fabric in my kit arrived pre-cut. The red and yellow fabrics were cut in strips so all I had to do to assemble the 4-patches was sew the yellow strips each to a red strip,cut them into 2-patches and then sew two 2-patches together to make 4-patches. Then I sewed the 4-patches to the green fabric. I’ll sew on the borders later today and it will be ready for quilting. Quick and Easy!!

The interesting thing for me about this project is that I would never have chosen to put together those fabrics. So it has been interesting for me to see them come together and work so well.

Another neat thing about this project is that you can go to the Downy Website and read the stories behind the quilts as they go from quilter to kids. They make for interesting reading and just maybe I’ll be able to read about the child that receives my quilt.

I had a great afternoon yesterday bowling with my kids!

With the bumpers and a slide to roll her ball down, my daughter was able to beat us all!!

What fun!!

One of my customers made this cute quilt with pink elephants.

I did some simple meandering and freehand roses for the quilting. The elephant embroidery designs are called Elepinks.

I’m working on replacing another binding on an antique quilt. This quilt was also made by Leta Rauch in the mid 1920’’s. It features a 25 Patch block alternating with a blank block. The border is made up of Improved Four Patch.

Leta used the same orange and blue patches in the centers of all of the 25 Patches and in the border blocks and scrap fabrics alternate with white in the remainder of the blocks.She hand quilted Xs in the centers of all of the blocks.

She quilted a feathered wreath in the center of each of the blank blocks… which, unfortunately, you cannot see very well in this photo.

I also added an embroidered label to the back of this quilt.

As someone commented in my last post, the quilt is exquisite in it’s simplicity!

Another project I have in the works is a binding replacement on one of my antique quilts.

This quilt was made by Leta Rauch, probably in the 1920s sometime. It is completely pieced and quilted by hand. Leta did exquisite hand work. There is a variety of very difficult patterns in the quilt; all masterfully pieced.

     The blank blocks are each quilted with a feathered wreath and the border also is feathered.

I feel lucky to have her quilt in my collection.

Congratulations to Kay of Out of the Basement!! Her quilt, Peppermint Stars, won Third Prize, Ensemble Bed Quilts, at the Indiana Heritage Quilt Show in Bloomington Indiana.

Debby over at These are pieces, too wrote yesterday about her journal in which she keeps pertinent quotes, lists and so forth. It has a wonderful quilt design on the cover too. I also keep a journal like that.

One of the main things I make notes of in my journal is new words that I’ve learned and their meanings. I read a lot and am always coming across words with which I’m not familiar. I’ve found that if I write the words down I am more likely to remember them in the future. A few of the words I have notes on are:

ebullience- the quality of lively or enthusiastic expression of thoughts or feeling

aplomb- complete and confident composure or self-assurance.

delphioracle– ambiguous, obscure <<< that is a particularly good definition of that word!! LOL!

I also make notes of passages from books that I particularly like. From Dickens’ Hard Times:

“Yes, I do wish that I had never had a family, and then you would have known what it was to do without me!”

and

“Stephen looked older, but he had had a hard life. It is said that every life has its roses and thorns; there seemed, however, to have been a misadventure or mistake in Stephen’s case, whereby somebody else had become possessed of his roses and he had become possessed of the same somebody else’s thorns in addition to his own.”

From Asimov’s The End of Eternity:

“The guilty fleeth when no man persueth.”

and:

“There was someone to talk to, someone with whom to discuss his life, his deeds and thoughts. It was as though she were a portion of himself, but a portion sufficiently separate to require speech in communication rather than thought. I have not participated in Work In Progress Wednesday in a very long time. I’m going to try to get in the habit of posting progress every week again as I tend to do more when I know I have to post something!! 🙂

I have 5 quilts in various stages of completion. I also have 1 box of fabrics that has been pulled out for an idea. But that box of fabric is about half way to the point of being returned to the stash. It’s kind of in that land of indecision… Do I really want to pursue it or not?  Hm-m-m-m.

The quilt I want to show you today is the one my daughter and I are working on together.

Tina chose these fabrics and we sketched up a quilt pattern in EQ that she liked. We’ve both been working on piecing the top. It is at the point now where it is ready for the borders to be added. As soon as we get the borders on we’ll get to do Tina’s favorite part- quilting!! I’m looking forward to that too!
