Executive Vice-President Virkkunen in Cape Town to meet the G20's digital economy ministers

On 29 September, in Cape Town, South Africa, Executive Vice-President for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, Henna Virkkunen has met with counterparts and participated in the G20 Digital Ministerial meeting.

Key topics on the agenda are inclusive digital deployment, development of digital public infrastructure, fostering digital innovation ecosystems and responsible use of artificial intelligence.

During bilateral meetings, the Executive Vice-President will engage with Solly Malaysia, the South African Minister of Communication and Digital Technologies, to discuss multilateral and bilateral cooperation in digital innovation and governance. Connectivity and inclusive connectivity will be the focus of meeting with Federico De Siquera, the Brazilian Minister for Communications, while talks with Lecheng Li, the Chinese Minister of Industry and Information Technology, will address 5G networks, cybersecurity, and the Digital Services Act (DSA).

Executive Vice-President, Henna Virkkunen, said:

“I am grateful for the work of the South African presidency of the G20 on the digital track. Now, more than ever, it is important that we work together at global level to promote digital innovation, good digital governance, and ensure an inclusive and just digital future.”

The discussions among the Executive Vice-President and G20 Ministers will address key priorities for the digital economy and will conclude with an award ceremony for innovative micro, small and medium enterprises.
