Evan drops another great video.
Listeners of the podcast know that one of my goals in each modeling project is to try new things. One of my current projects is really allowing me to do that. I am building the Minicraft B-52H for my brother who spent 20 years flying them. It is my first 1/144 scale kit (new thing #1)
While working on the kit, I used Tamiya lacquers for the first time. (new thing #2) See previous blog post. Also, on the recommendation of my podcast partner, I tried Citadel’s Nuln Oil shader. (new thing #3) So far I really like the way it came out.

I know actual modeling content has been a bit thin on the ground here for a while. My apologies. I hope to fix that starting now.
Recently, I accidentally discovered a brand new hobby shop in Sellersburg, IN. Upscaled has been operating about two months.

They have a great selection of paint lines, including the new Tamiya lacquer paint line. I’ve been wanting to try these, especially their metallics. I picked some up. Yesterday I used them for the first time. I must say my first impressions are good.

So far, so good. I will keep you posted.
Sad news for 72nd scale modelers, Tamiya came out with their announcement of what new kits they are doing in 2021,, and sadly, nothing new in 72nd scale.
Those of you who have listened to the podcast, have been following the saga of Mike having sucked me into building a 1/35th scale Soviet armor piece. (That may be placing too much blame on Mike, but hey, what do I care.) I’d have finished construction sooner, but frankly, the Trumpeter instructions appear to have been produced using the infinite monkey theorem. And let me tell, you, they ain’t Shakespeare. (I will have more to say on the Trumpeter instructions once I am done, but I need to give them time to buy the asbestos underwear they will need.)
Well, the M-30 has entered the paint booth. This is good as the paint booth was empty since the completion of the Biber. Now that the M-30 is off the construction cutting mat, I can move the Mosquito back on and make some progress. Also, I am planning the 2021 campaign season. (Who am I kidding. Every year Mike and I exchange lists of our top ten planned builds for the coming year, and when I get to the end of the year, my list of completions look nothing like my beginning of the year list.)
Now, before you judge me too harshly on the M-30, keep in mind the last time I finished a 35th scale artillery piece was 1996. (BTW, that was my most productive year ever.) That year I finished a Tamiya Pak 35/36 and a Flak 38. (Pictured below)
OK, you can stop laughing now. Please keep in mind that this was the mid 90s, weathering was still in the dry-brushing era and these were the only two 35th scale kits I built. (How about that really slick base job on the Flak 38) Naturally, with the M-30, I am striving for a bit more. I am binge watching Uncle Night Shift episodes and am alternately inspired and depressed.
Stay tuned.
Tamiya is apparently releasing a new 72nd scale kit this year. They are scaling down their excellent Me-109G-6 from 48th scale. While it might not have been my first choice I am glad to see any new 72nd scale kit.

The modelwife and kids went on vacation and left me alone for a week. I decided to attempt a “Geldmacher Blitz” (a build of a kit from 6 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Monday. While I failed in my attempt to get a model completed in that time, I was able to finish the Tamiya A6M2 by the time my family returned from vacation. For purposes of keeping track I lumped this all into one build session even though it stretched over 9 days and the 15 hour total is a guestimate. I will do a first half of the year roundup in my next post.
