Santa Maria

Santa Maria is truly a non-place, a place that was not meant to be, an absurd place living only through and because of the people who are going to leave that place within a matter of ten or fourteen days, which gives it an atmosphere of elusive briefness. It once had been a small fishing village on the southern tip of monotonous Sal, before it rose to its new incarnation as a touristic hotspot with thousands and thousands flying in every day, and being stored away in neatly lined up resorts. The beaches and the safe-to-swim water are in and around Santa Maria, so it is there where you can party all night (up to 10:30pm), belt through the wasteland just outside town on a quad bike, ride a monster truck, zipline down a rock, go for some surfing, snorkelling or just bake in the sun on the beach or poolside while holiday entertainers try to force you into Karaoke or something similar pleasing. Santa Maria ist ein echter Nicht-Ort, ein Ort, der so eigentlich nicht existieren sollte, ein absurder Ort, der bloß durch die Anwesenheit von Menschen zum Leben erwacht, die ihn innerhalb von zehn oder vierzehn Tagen wieder verlassen werden, was ihm eine Atmosphäre von flüchtiger Gedrängtheit verleiht. Ursprünglich einmal ein kleines Fischerdorf an der Südspitze des eintönigen Sal, hat es eine Metamorphose zum touristischen Hotspot durchlaufen, den täglich Abertausende anfliegen, die dann in sauber aufgereihten Ressorts verstaut werden. Die Strände und das zum Schwimmen sichere Wasser finden sich in und um Santa Maria, weshalb man dort nun die Nacht (bis 10:30 Uhr) durchfeiern, mit dem Quad durch das karge Brachland außerhalb der Stadt kacheln, auf einem Monster-Truck mitfahren, an einer ZIP-Line einen Felsen hinabrutschen, surfen, schnorcheln oder auch einfach am Strand oder Pool durchbrutzeln kann, wo einem der Animateur zu Karaoke oder Schlimmerem zwingt.
