Georgia Fields, Tim McMillan, Yelka @ The Wesley Anne 27/06/09

There are two types of  live acoustic music: there is the boring, lifeless kind that sound like it has been taken straight from the CD and then there is the entertaining kind that is either emotional or delivered in a way that sucks the audience in. Luckily all of the bands that performed on Saturday night fit into the latter catagory.

This gig was organised to help Yelka raise funds to record her debut album, and if tonight is anything to go by, it will definatly be one worth buying.

I missed out on the first support act but arrived just in time to catch the beginning of Georgia Fields‘ set. This was my first time seeing her live and apperently she usually performs with a band. Her music is a little on the quirky side and her lyrics were often witty. She mixed up her set by switching from guitar to keyboard to ukele. She is definently worth checking out.

It isn’t often that you get to witness someting truley orginal. When Tim McMillian introduced his band as “The Renagades of Goblincore” we knew we were in for a treat.  Joined by a dummer and a bass player he played amazing metal style guitar on an acoustic guitar and would often interrupt instrumentals by shouting in what sounded like German. Occaisonally he would also join the bass player for some mournful sounding singing.  this may sound bizzare on paper, and to an extent it was, his set was one of the most entertaing I’ve seen in quite some time. In between songs she would share hilarious stories (I won’t give anything away) and would often begin songs with instrumental covers of pop songs befor launching into some kind of crazy guitar jam. I highly recommend seeing them live if you can.

The final performer tonight was Yelka and her small band. Despite her young age, Yelka makes music that can be both touching and at times, humorous. She has an amazing voice and I wouldn’t be suprised if she ends of sharing the stage with the likes of Clare Bowditch in the near future. She played a mix of old and new material and even threw in a song about one of her bandmate’s habit of getting parking fines. Her set was cut short because of time restrctions, however it didn’t stop it being a great show.

Also, the people standing outside the door listening should be ashamed of themselves. Would it kill you to support the bands and pay $12?

Tim McMillan and Yelka are playing a show at the Northcote Social Club on the 19th of July, I hightly reccomend going.

Kisschasy-Generation Why

There are two reasons why I don’t like the new single from Kisschasy:

1) The title is a pun on “Generation Y.” This is something that always pisses me off. We aren’t all stupid, we don’t all throw Corey worthington style parties and many of us refuse to listen to shitty Pop punk/emo/whatever you call it music.

2) The song, and this band for that matter, play pop punk/emo/whatever you call it music.

Don’t get me wrong, I know these guys have heaps of teenage fans and I liked them a few years ago, but their music so forgettable. There are so many bands that sound like this and it’s a sound that’s not particually interesting or even fun to listen to. For a genre that is supossedly “emotional” there really isn’t any, at leastn ot in this song.

Anyway, here is the video. It’s probably just worth a look to see the lead singer’s Billie Joe Armstrong impersonation.

New Video and Tour for Children Collide

What is it with bands choosing to release interactive videos? There seem to be quite a few coming out latley. Not that I’m complaining, they put a fun twist on the typical music video, although I’m not sure how they’ll go on Rage…

It’s no secret that I absolutley love Children Collide and was extremely exctited when I found out that their next single would be Chosen Armies, one of the best songs off their The Long Now album. The video is interactive and is a 360 degree panorama that lets you choose what you see. It can be found here.

Michael Jackson Is Dead

There are times when you will remember exactly where you were when you heard the news. Today was one of these days.

Today while I was eating breakfast it was annouced that Michael Jackson had had a cardiac arrest and there were rumours of his death. Unfortunatly these rumors proved to be true and by lunchtime every one in my school was talking about his death.

Although it’s hard to ignore the negetive press he’s recived in the past few years, he had some amazing songs and there will be a lot of sad people in the world today.

Letters by Matt Corby

There have been very few contestents from Australian Idol that have managed to make a name for themselves without having to resort to joining girl groups made up of other ex-contestants or sleeping with Paris Hilton. This is probably due to the huge stigma attached to being a contestant on the show. Their seems to be this idea that people who have been on the show can’t become serious muscians.

Most of you will probably remember Matt Corby as the runner-up in the 2007 series of Australian Idol. While the winner, Natalie Gouchi seems to have fallen off the face of the earth, he has grown a beard and recorded an EP. Instead of going for the typical route of releasing dodgy pop songs on a major label, he has recorded an EP of folk songs that are probably best compared to Bon Iver.

I know many people will probably be put off by the whole Australian Idol thing but this video is worth a look/listen especially if you’re a fan of the folk genre. Althogh I’m still not entirely sure aobut that beard….

This One Time At Band Camp…

Well folks, I’m off to band camp. This means for the next week or so there probably won’t be any updates as I will be locked in a place with 1 TV and maybe a heater if I’m really lucky.

I signed on to go on a tour of Tasmania with the school orchestra but thanks to swine flu, they won’t let us in and i’m off to Ballarat instead. Not happy.

Damn you Babe!

Damn you Babe!

Anyway, I bought a couple of CDs over the weekend so I’ll have some reviews for you when I get back.

The Amcats- Jang Jang Robot

They say that comparing bands to other bands is lazy writing. But it is impossible to write about Adelaide band The Amcats without mentioning The White Stripes. The band is comprised of Shane (vocals, guitars) and Renee (drums) and they play a healthy mix of Mississipi blues and garage rock that would make Jack White proud.
The band have recently relasesed a 7″ titled “Jang Jang Robot.” The release was limited to 150 copies and can be purchased from:

The “A Day At The Green” festivals are held at wineries each year and usually feature bands that play country music, mellow pop or acoustic music.  This year however, fun 80’s pop band The B52’s will be playing instead.

The Frowning Clouds

Who needs a time machine when bands are making music like this?

Young bands playing 60’s inspired music seems to be a bit of a trend at the moment and The Frowning Clouds are probably one of the best examples of this.

Hailing from Geelong, The Frowning Clouds are another young Australian band playing 60’s inspired music like they were there when it happend. Their sound is a mix of original r&b, garage rock and a touch of pyschadellica. While they might not be doing anything new, they do it so well that it doesn’t really matter. Thier frontman Zak has great snarly vocals, the guitars are jangly and the rythm section chuggs along in a way that makes you want to dance your arse off. In other words, they have everything you could possibly want from a retro band.

Hoodoo Voodoo Dolls

I realised that there is a serious lack of psychobilly on this blog and what better way to correct the problem than with an Australian band.

For those of you who are unfamiliar to the genre of pyschobilly, it is a mixture of rockabilly, punk and B-movie influences. As strange as this combination may sound on paper, in practice it  works incredibly well.

Hoodoo Voodoo Dolls hail from Adelaide and have all the elements of a great pyschobilly band: greart guitar riffs, a standing drummer, lyrics that come straight from a horror movie and the all important upright bass.

The closest band I could compare these guys to is Zombie Ghost Train, although I supposse you could say these guys are like The Living End on speed.

Believe it or not, all of the members are under 21, however it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take them seriously. Except when they’re singing about necrophelia…
