Is Laughter REALLY the Best Medicine?

laughing

“Laughter is the best medicine.”
–Old saying

The world desperately wants the reader to ENJOY laughter–as well he should, MOST of the time.

Beside the old saying quoted at the beginning of this piece, the world’s authorities have weighed in HEAVILY on the side of laughter being good medicine for man.

Laughter can: Stimulate many organs. Laughter enhances your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulates your heart, lungs and muscles, and increases the endorphins that are released by your brain. Activate and relieve your stress response.
Stress relief from laughter? It’s no joke

You’ve probably heard the old saying “Laughter is the best medicine.” But it’s more than just an old wives’ tale — laughing can really benefit your health.

“Just a few minutes of laughter a day can improve your health in more ways than you might realize,” explains Maria Heveran, a physician assistant at Geisinger’s Lewisburg clinic.
WHY Laughter is the Best Medicine

Among the myriad of prescriptions for health, perhaps none is more important than laughter. In fact, laughter ranks fairly high in the medicine toolbox, with research suggesting that it induces a wide variety of benefits that range from stress reduction and improved breathing to providing an extra boost to the body’s immune system and increasing pain tolerance.
Laughter Might Actually Be the Best Medicine

NOW, the world has had its say–and there are HUNDREDS of similar articles the reader may spend some time reading.

BUT, what about the Bible?

What does God’s Word have to say on the matter?

Actually, God’s Word is fairly supportive.

“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.”
–Proverbs 17:22

“A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.”
–Proverbs 15:13

“All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.”
–Proverbs 15:15

NOW, BEFORE the reader makes up his mind that he should be laughing more, he SHOULD know more.

Laughter is ALMOST the universal sign of derision and scorn.  It is very difficult to make fun of someone IF one does not laugh at him.

Those verses from God’s Word on laughter?

They are referring to a HEALTHY laugh–one WITHOUT a target.

God’s Word has MUCH to say about SCORN–and NONE of it is good.

“Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, That which thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard. This is the word that the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin the daughter of Zion hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee. Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.”
–2KINGS 19:21

“I am as one mocked of his neighbour, who calleth upon God, and he answereth him: the just upright man is laughed to scorn.”
–Job 12:4

“Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou shalt drink of thy sister’s cup deep and large: thou shalt be laughed to scorn and had in derision; it containeth much.”
–Ezekiel 23:32

SO, NOT all laughter is created equal.

Some laughter is SCORNFUL and makes fun of the one targeted.  Such laughter causes heartache and despair.

Some laughter is JOYFUL and makes an angry heart settled.  It is not only good for the one relating the funny stuff, it’s good for the one hearing it.

Something for the reader to keep in mind the next time he hears, “Laughter is the best medicine.”

DOES the reader believe that laughter is the BEST medicine?

It is not YET too late–although time is surely running out: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”

Spin On Sin

DOES the reader know of anyone who engages in some sort of WELL-KNOWN self-destructive behavior?

Further, DOES the reader know of any such person who engages in this undesirable action and tries to tell whoever is listening that the action is actually a BENEFIT?

The best known examples are smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol.

NEITHER behavior is approved by the Bible.  Both behaviors are self-destructive–which is looked down upon by God’s Word.

“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit”
–Ephesians 5:18

“Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.”
–Proverbs 20:1

“He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.”
–Proverbs 16:32

“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
–Galatians 5:16-17,19-21

Both behaviors are detrimental to the user BUT some users try to put a little spin on their sin and pretend that the behavior is not hurtful.

For instance, it once happened–in the city of Baltimore–that a person who smoked cigarettes compared them to working out at a gym!

This was something how that conversation, which was overheard, went.

“Can you talk to me for a few minutes now?”

“Okay, we have a few minutes.  What’s on your mind? (Looking down at a cigarette held between her two fingers) I’ve got to quit these.  They’re killing me!”

“Why do you say that?  Everybody thinks cigarettes are BAD for you.  I don’t know. I smoke.  There are more people who die of stress and hypertension than die of lung cancer. (Amazingly, no one checked this statistic out.) So when you smoke a cigarette, it’s like going to the gym but you don’t get sweaty.”

You know, I never thought of it that way.  Now, what did you want to talk to me about?”

This unusual line of reasoning MUST have been effective because the lady ended up saying “Yes.” to the man’s proposal.

At any rate, the man put a little ‘spin’ on his sin to make it sound better than it really was.

spin:

figuratively) To presentdescribe, or interpret, or to introduce a bias or slant, so as to give something a favorable or advantageous appearance. quotations synonyms

Synonyms: whitewashsugarcoatput lipstick ongildblandishdress up

Two men, one who smoked;another who regularly drank whiskey, used spin to make their sin a little more palatable to them both.

The first man scanned the newspapers and magazines DAILY for scraps of information which claimed that drinking alcohol was the source of unpromoted health benefits.

He then trotted out these yellowed newspaper and magazine clippings ANY time someone got on him about his drinking.

“Hey!  Drinking is GOOD for me!  Looky here!”

The other man would point to a cigarette he held and claim that it ‘kept him out of trouble.’

“These don’t leave me time or money to get into worse kinds of trouble!”

(Furiously spinning to make his sin appear less destructive than it really was.

UNFORTUNATELY, the second man spent the last several years of his life suffering from the ill health effects of his lifelong, relentless smoking habit.)

Putting a little spin on one’s sin: it’s what the pagans do to make their sin sound SO much better than it is.

However, the church folk have some practice at that activity of making sin sound SO much better than it it.

…and this is ONLY referring to the PHYSICAL effects of sin, NOT the SPIRITUAL ones.

“The soul that sinneth, it shall die.”
–Ezekiel 18:20

DOES the reader engage in a self-destructive sin that he spins to be a LOT better than it is?

It is not YET too late–although time is surely running out: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

The Familiar, Triumphant Cry of Failure

CRY OF FAILURE

Whenever the great and wise leaders of a country, a federal agency, a government bureau–whatever–advise the population to do something and that something does NOT work, there will, no doubt, echo that familiar, triumphant cry of failure heard everywhere.

“It could have been worse!”

WHENEVER the media or the government’s directives do NOT work out, one can be sure that whatever failed orders were issued will be defended.

“It could have been worse!”

Some defense…

Whenever the government confronted the dread disease initially labeled “coronavirus” (and then “COVID“), the government told the populace to wear masks.

Oops!

The government told the people to stay six feet from each other in public.

Oops!

The government told folks to wash their hands.

Oops!

The government told folks to get a vaccine shot and their COVID worries would be over and done with.

No matter what the government advised the people to do to fight the scourge of COVID, it did NOT work.

Not that it mattered, for the government wienies issued that familiar triumphant cry of failure heard EVERYWHERE.

“It could have been worse!”

Whenever the reader hears that cry, he may know that there was a path of COMPLETE and UTTER FAILURE which was traveled BEFORE that declaration was employed.

DOES the reader ever resort to claiming, “It could have been worse!“?

It is not YET too late–although time is surely running out: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

ALL of This Medicine

ALL OF THIS MEDICINE...

Moderns place a GREAT DEAL of their hopes in medicine.

Medicine is supposedly what will cure what is wrong with you, health-wise.

Moderns are told REPEATEDLY that the medical field is nothing but a bunch of selfless folks whose ONLY concern is for you to get better (if you are not feeling well).

Years ago, it was pointed out that “Medicine does not work the way you are told it works.”

AT THE TIME, this observation set off an argument of EPIC proportions with ALL those in listening distance.

“Medicine made me better when I had heart problems!”

“I trust medicine more than I trust politicians!”

“A person has to believe in SOMETHING!  I choose to believe in the medical field.”

HOWEVER, about five years later, one of the folks present when that observation was first made, said something that TOTALLY surprised this writer (who heard it).

The person who said the surprising thing was a member in good standing of the medical profession: a registered nurse.

The person was in bed because of some malady and, faced with a slew of pills, exclaimed, “All of this medicine?  I’m not taking all of this medicine all at once!”

This was surprising because only five years or so before, the person had faithfully defended the medical field–including personnel and medicine.

“But you believe in medicine! This will help get you back on your feet.”

“I told you: I’m NOT taking all of this medicine at one time!”

As the woman was adamant, there was nothing to do but give her smaller, more measured doses.

The question which went unasked–but which SHOULD have been posed:

“Did you see something which changed your mind?”

That question will remain unasked because that person is no longer with us.

Once again, medicine does NOT work the way the reader thinks it works.

An End Times Sort-Of Life

“And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?”
–1PETER 4:8

We will now engage the reader in a sort of MIND EXERCISE.

Can the reader think back, back, oh–to maybe about two years ago?

Back before the supposed pandemic had everyone recoiling back six feet?

(“We just want you to be safe!“)

Back before the supposed pandemic had everyone sporting a mask?

(“Now, don’t you feel safer?“)

Back before every media account of the CORONAVIRUS was replete with its own personal set of disease statistics–which were published alongside of the latest ‘news’ of the virus?

In short, back when life was a little more “normal?”

And remember how many others spoke of life returning to “normal?”

Remember when the powers-that-be said (in effect), “Ah, the heck with it.  Let’s talk about the “New Normal?”

Back when darkness was much easier to distinguish from the light?

Back when life didn’t come with so many strings attached?

Back when the believer was free to make observations and perceptions which centered around God Almighty?

Back when the heathen was free to honor his pagan gods as long and loudly as he wished?

Back before everything it seemed took on the tinge of the end times?

Back before life itself took on a sort-of end times’ feel to it?

And what, exactly, is a ‘sort-of end times feel’?

One might argue that a ‘sort-of end times feel’ to life was a life MORE guarded.

One might argue that a ‘sort-of end times feel’ to life was a life lived more carefully?

Back before one could act BEFORE checking God’s Word for guidance?

DOES the reader remember ANY of that?

DOES the reader remember ANY of that at all?

DOES the reader remember all of the CHANGES which have happened over the past two years?

WHAT does the reader suppose it all means?

It is not YET too late: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

1CORINTHIANS 6:19 vs 1TIMOTHY 4:8

RUNNING

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?”
–1CORINTHIANS 6:19

“For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.”
–1TIMOTHY 4:8

When one (who is a follower of Jesus) decides to keep his body physically fit, it seems that he has a choice between 1CORINTHIANS 6:19 (one’s body is the temple of the Holy Spirit) and 1TIMOTHY 4:8 (bodily exercise profiteth little).

But does he?

Like ALL in God’s Word that APPEARS to contradict, one must RECONCILE the two APPARENTLY differing points of view.

And so it is between what 1CORINTHIANS 6:19 and 1TIMOTHY 4:8 are advising.

The two verses contradict ONLY IF one is looking for contradictions.

On the one hand, a believer is to maintain his body as a fit and proper temple for God’s Holy Spirit–which is now dwelling within the believer.

On the other hand, a believer cannot lose sight of the fact that he is to MAINTAIN his body as a temple–NOT build a grandiose new one.

In other words, one should keep his body in a fit condition.  BUT, one should not make the dedication of  his physical improvement of his body a goal above all else.

This body is made from the dust of the ground.  It will return to dust once the believer moves on to the next life.

“In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.”
–Genesis 3:19

“Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.”
–Ecclesiastes 12:7

Do not make this body of dust the focus of one’s most cherished goal–to the exclusion of more important things–in this life, and especially, in the life to come.

DOES the reader believe he must make a choice between maintaining his body as a temple of the Holy Spirit and NOT maintaining it?

It is not YET too late: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

Invalid Nation

invalid

Is America an Invalid Nation?

The Corporate Media has not missed many opportunities over the past ten years or so to promote the idea that America is a very sickly country.

Like most troubles in America, the CAUSE is usually tied to ‘not spending enough money’ on the problem.

Be that as it may, a glance around at the average American will reveal the unhealthy state of the union.

This topic was selected because earlier today, while waiting for a neighbor, it was noticed that cars and vans were pulling up to a health clinic and discharging, what were presumably, patients. It was further noticed that the people who exited the cars were NOT, as a rule, elderly BUT were mostly speculated to be in their 40’s and 50’s–some appeared to be younger.

And these people acted UNHEALTHY.

Almost all were helped from their cars by someone who was more ambulatory.

Almost all were walking with assistance: either a cane or walker or a cart of oxygen.  One fellow had what appeared to be a walking stick.

Upon watching this steady parade of sick, noxious unwellness for ten minutes or more, the idea of THE USA AS AN INVALID NATION was formed.

If one spends a half hour or more at a local Walmart (or other big box) watching the customers enter and leave, one will soon agree that America is a nation of unhealthy people.

HAS the reader noticed this seeming state of unhealthiness?

DOES the reader believe this?

IF ‘yes,’ why does the reader believe this to be?

It is not YET too late: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

-–Romans 1:16
