Electrify Now responds to the need for more secure, affordable and resilient energy systems by advancing practical cooperation, sharing solutions and mobilising investment across clean power, electricity infrastructure and end-use sectors.
What is Electrify Now?
Launched on 23 June 2026 during London Climate Action Week, Electrify Now is an open, voluntary and multi-stakeholder movement. Its government coalition connects political leadership with the expertise, investment and implementation capacity of the wider movement to turn the global shift towards clean electricity into practical progress.
The government coalition facilitates policy and regulatory exchanges, develops practical recommendations, showcases approaches that can be replicated across countries, regions and sectors, supports the tracking of progress and helps mobilise investment, particularly in emerging markets and developing economies. Electrification backed by renewable and other clean energy can reduce dependence on volatile fossil-fuel imports, improve energy efficiency, strengthen competitiveness and support jobs and resilient supply chains.
How the initiative works?
Electrify Now is structured around 2 complementary coalitions. Each sets its own priorities and is responsible for its own activities and outputs. They communicate and coordinate where this can help advance their shared ambition to accelerate clean electrification
- Governments: set political direction; exchange policy, regulatory and technical experience; bring forward national and regional examples; and support stronger ambition, practical policy tools, progress tracking and investment mobilisation.
- Business groups, think tanks and civil society organisations: communicate the opportunities and showcase the benefits of electrification, identify barriers to deployment, and contribute technical expertise and policy advice on solutions that can unlock faster implementation.
Finance and investment institutions are also being engaged to help mobilise investment, build project pipelines and develop de-risking and financing solutions for accelerated electrification.
The coalitions will develop complementary outputs and come together at key international milestones to assess progress, identify gaps and inform their respective priorities for the next phase of work.
3 pillars for practical cooperation
Work under Electrify Now is organised around 3 closely connected pillars
- Electrification of end-use sectors
accelerating the uptake of efficient electric solutions in industry, transport and buildings, including heating and cooling.
- Grids, interconnections and system flexibility
expanding and modernising electricity grids, strengthening regional interconnections, accelerating storage and enabling more flexible and resilient power systems.
- Expanding clean electricity supply to meet new demand
accelerating renewable and other clean electricity generation, improving enabling policy frameworks and strengthening diversified and sustainable supply chains.
Progress is needed across all 3 pillars. The economic and climate benefits depend on greater use of electric technologies across the economy. Additional clean generation is essential to reduce fossil-fuel dependence and emissions, while grids and system flexibility are needed to deliver electricity reliably to consumers.
Participating governments and partners
The European Commission coordinates the Electrify Now government coalition, which the following countries have joined: Armenia, Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Ethiopia, Germany, Jordan, Kenya, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and Uruguay.
The International Energy Agency and the International Renewable Energy Agency provide analytical support.
Business groups, think tanks and civil society organisations cooperate through a separate coalition. Engagement with finance and investment institutions is being developed.
The government coalition invites other governments to join this cooperative platform and accelerate practical progress on clean electrification. It will use global and regional platforms, including the Global Energy Transition Forum, to broaden participation, connect the work of the coalitions and carry forward concrete deliverables.
Relationship with the COP31 electrification target
The COP31 Presidency is championing a global objective to increase the share of electricity in final energy demand to 35% by 2035, reflecting analysis by the International Energy Agency and the International Renewable Energy Agency.
The Electrify Now government coalition welcomes the Presidency's focus on accelerated electrification. The Turkish COP31 presidency’s 35-by-35 Pledge initiative signals a shared ambition to significantly increase the share of electricity in the energy mix. Joining the Electrify Now coalition will help countries and organisations deliver on it.
Accelerating electrification also complements the COP28 goals of tripling global renewable energy capacity and doubling the global average annual rate of energy-efficiency improvements by 2030.
Indicative outputs
Outputs developed across the stakeholder coalitions and substantive pillars may include
- political statements and joint announcements
- policy and regulatory recommendations, playbooks and exchanges
- national, regional and sectoral implementation case studies
- showcases of flagship projects, technologies and business solutions
- investment initiatives, financing tools and approaches to crowd in private capital
Outputs and progress updates will be added to this page as the initiative develops.
