After four days at Reeperbahn Festival, one idea kept coming up across the conversations we joined: independence doesn’t mean operating alone. We attended a panel with Helen Smith, CEO of IMPALA, where she shared her perspective on some of the challenges shaping the independent music sector, from fairer digital remuneration and market access to AI, fraud and the sustainability of the streaming ecosystem. The discussion also highlighted an important nuance around AI: the question isn’t simply whether AI belongs in music, but how the industry can build clear frameworks around licensing, transparency and remuneration, while continuing to recognise meaningful human creation. Across the conversations we joined, the message was consistent: being independent is becoming less about doing everything yourself and more about retaining enough ownership and agency to choose the right partners, technology and opportunities to grow. That’s also why events like Reeperbahn matter. They create space to exchange perspectives, challenge assumptions and learn from the people shaping the industry, helping the independent music sector grow stronger through connection. A big thank you to everyone we had the chance to meet, learn from and exchange ideas with in Hamburg.

Independence is easy to measure through ownership. Operational independence is harder to see. The infrastructure behind distribution, royalties and data can have a direct impact on how much control a label or distributor retains as it grows. For businesses reviewing their tech stack, the question is not only what the infrastructure can do today but whether it gives them the flexibility and control to scale tomorrow. The independent sector doesn't need less infrastructure. It needs better infrastructure, built to keep choice, control and opportunity in the hands of independent businesses. 👉🏼 Read the full article to explore what that means for labels and distributors: https://lnkd.in/daYvTDh4

What does the current music landscape tell us about where the industry is heading? We joined AIM Connected in London last week, and came away with a few takeaways that stood out: 🌍 The UK remains a key global market, with strong audience engagement and international reach. 🚀 International growth is becoming more diverse, with markets like India, Mexico and Brazil creating new opportunities, while others such as South Korea require a more targeted approach. 🤖 AI is putting control in the spotlight, with artist consent, rights and data management becoming increasingly important. And that last point connects to something we think about every day at SonoSuite: the infrastructure behind music matters. The systems that manage distribution, rights and data can play an increasingly important role in helping rightsholders maintain visibility and control as the industry evolves. A few reflections from a day of conversations about the broader music industry and the opportunities and challenges shaping the future of independent music.

We're attending AIM Connected this Thursday, September 10, at Rich Mix, London. Hosted by the Association of Independent Music (AIM), the event brings together the people actually shaping the independent music sector, across business, technology and talent. For a company built on the infrastructure layer between labels, distributors and DSPs, that's exactly the room we need to be in. Meet the team who we'll be there: - Henriette Heimdal, Chief Commercial Officer - Jelmer Schütte, Chief Operating Officer - Dan Fowler, Director of Publishing If you're attending and want to talk about where digital distribution is headed, or how the infrastructure supporting it needs to keep up, come find us.

Spotify is introducing a new signal that directly affects catalog discoverability, not just artist presentation. Starting mid September, an AI Persona badge will appear on artist profiles, in search results, and on track rows, identifying when an artist's public identity is AI generated rather than a real person. Unlike AI Credits or SongDNA, this isn't about how the music was made. It's about who the artist claims to be. For labels and distributors managing AI driven artist projects, the practical implication is timing. We break down the mechanism and what to prioritize before mid September in the carousel. What are your thoughts on this? Let us know in the comments 👇🏻

We spent three days at All About Music 2026 in Mumbai, and these are the shifts that stood out to our team. India's music market is scaling fast: financial sustainability is outweighing creative ambition as the top career challenge, artists are building revenue streams beyond streaming backed by granular DSP data, and infrastructure conversations, like the ones we had at the Connect Corner, are becoming as important as the creative ones. Swipe through for our full recap 👇🏻 If you're working with artists or labels in India, is infrastructure keeping pace with how fast the market is growing?
