Things I Am Excited About This Week

Confetti_in_Toronto

1. Reception for The Scribe has been phenomenal. I’m incredibly grateful for all of you who have bought the book, recommended it, shared it with friends, etc. To answer the most common questions I’m getting:

  • YES, I’m working on the second book right now! I’m about a third of the way in. Maybe a little more. But I’m not going to give an exact release date for it. Spring of next year is about as specific as I can get right now.
  • NO, I haven’t abandoned either the Elemental series OR the Cambio series. I have stories brewing for both, but when all you can think about is one book, it’s pretty useless to try writing a different one. Therefor, I’m working on THE SINGER: Irin Chronicles Book Two at the moment.
  • NO, there’s no audiobook for The Scribe yet, but I’m definitely looking into doing one. I might try producing this one on my own. We’ll see. (No, that doesn’t mean I’d be narrating.)
  • YES, there’s a giveaway for a signed paperback over on Goodreads, but NO, it doesn’t cover all countries. I will, however, be doing a giveaway here on the blog next week that will be open to everyone.
  • YES, the book really did have to end there.

2. Trip to Houston!

I’ll be at the Black Lab this coming Saturday to meet you guys. I’m also doing a reading/signing at The Honors College at University of Houston on Thursday evening. (But I’m not sure if that one is invite only. I’ll find out and let you all know.) Very, very excited to be back at my alma mater and meeting with old friends and new readers. Can’t wait! I should probably pack a suitcase or something, right?

UPDATE: The very helpful Lucy Bonner with The Honors College left this response in the comments:

“Hi Elizabeth and fans,

The event here at the Honors College is open to all! We would like to have anyone interested come join us.

7:30- 9:00 pm
The Honors College Commons
212 MD Anderson Library
Houston, Texas 77204

If anyone has questions, please contact 713-743-9010. We hope to see you all there!”

Thanks, Lucy!

3. Audiobooks with SmallBoy.

In addition to my own audiobooks of the Elemental Mysteries series (which you can buy here from Audible!) I’ve been listening to a bunch of audiobooks with SmallBoy in the car. Being as he’s an 8yo ninja, reading is not always his most favorite thing to do, but he loooooves the audiobooks. His favorites so far have been How To Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell, narrated by David Tennant. (Doctor? Doctor!) I bought the audiobook from Audible, but for some reason, it’s no longer for sale anywhere except on CD. Which bums me out majorly, because SmallBoy wanted to listen to the rest! And the other one he absolutely loved with Odd and the Frost Giants, written and narrated by Neil Gaiman. Fantastic book!

Also, just putting this out there for bloggers out there who review audio. If you would like review copies of any of my audiobooks, please do let me know! I’d love to get some to you. Email me at ElizabethHunterWrites@gmail.com if you’re interested.

That’s what’s happening with me this week. What are you all up to?

Bloggity, Blog, Blog, Blog (I’m moving!)

So, what am I doing lately?

I didn’t, in fact, die of the plague over the weekend. Despite my initial worry, it was just a cold. Suffice to say, I’m a little melodramatic and I hate being sick. I don’t get sick very often, so I’m a big baby when I do. Luckily, I survived, and SmallBoy is excellent at putting up with mom when she’s sick.

moving dayMore news: I bought a house! This is very exciting for a number of reasons. As many of you know, my ex and I separated last year around the time The Force of Wind came out, which meant a move and a lot of other changes for all of us. Lots of changes and things were a bit edgy for a while, but we’re good. And honestly, I thought I was going to be a long ways off from buying a house on my own, so this is really, really exciting for me and SmallBoy. (Plus, the new house has a pool, which my son thinks is pretty awesome, since he would live in the water, if that was possible.) So I’m moving in November.

Wait… I’m moving in November?

THAT’S NEXT MONTH.

Holy packing boxes, Batman! And I still have a book coming out. And a trip to Houston. And soccer games. (If anyone wants to volunteer to bring halftime snacks on the 11th, that would be great, thanks.) And you don’t even want to know about the laundry pile. (That’s just scary.)

TheScribe_ebookLuckily, all the editing/proofreading/formatting on The Scribe is close to being done, so it should all be delivered to your e-reader/mailbox promptly on October 15th. Advance reviews have been—I’m not going to lie—really, really good. This is very flattering, and also very motivating, as I’m working on the second book in the series right now.

Okay, so now that you know all this, if I’m not around on Facebook and Twitter and not blogging much, that is the reason. I’m still writing as much as I can, because Elizabeth turns into a very cranky girl if she doesn’t get in writing time. (Really, it’s not pretty.) But, since time will be limited, if something needs to take a backseat for a while, it’s going to be online world.

I do have a couple interviews coming up, so I’ll try to remember to post about those, so you can give a listen, if you like. Other than that, I’m going to try to cut back and focus on 1) The Scribe release. 2) The meet up in Houston. 3) MOVING HOUSE and all it entails.

To tide you over until the 15th, here’s another teaser from THE SCRIBE, which Doug Meeks (reviewer extraordinaire) calls “the greatest romantic plot I have read this year.” (No joke, he actually said that. Thanks, Doug!) It’s a nice, fat teaser, and it’s probably the last one you’ll get, folks. So I hope you enjoy.

And wish me luck! I’ve got packing to do. Continue reading “Bloggity, Blog, Blog, Blog (I’m moving!)”

Character Description: Malachi from THE SCRIBE

TheScribe_ebook

First, some news: Revisions for THE SCRIBE are done! Yay! It’s off to the editor now. ARCs will be going out to reviewers in a couple of weeks, then the release is still set for October 15th. To everyone who has preordered, thank you!

So, character description.

Character description is kind of a funny thing. A lot of it depends on what point of view you’re writing from. Since I write primarily in alternating close third person (which  means the narrator uses “he/she” instead of “I/we,” but speaks only from one character’s perspective at a time), describing characters can be a challenge.

Why? Well, honestly, most of us don’t go around thinking about how we look all the time. (If you do, you might want to consider how healthy that is. Just saying.) So sometimes, a character stays kind of fuzzy until he or she encounters another character who notices how they look.

This is really just a long and meandering way of saying I have another little teaser from THE SCRIBE for you. Here’s a piece from Chapter Two, when Ava is watching Malachi.

From THE SCRIBE, Chapter Two…

She wandered the edges of the palace, looking out over stunning views of the sea and snapping pictures for hours. Every now and then, she’d catch a glimpse of him on the edge of her frame.

Hello, stranger. Ava snapped another picture of him, pushing a button on her camera to examine him more closely.

At least they’d hired an attractive one this time.

He looked Turkish. Taller than average. Most professional bodyguards were far from romantic notions portrayed in movies or books, even farther from the giant thugs who followed musicians around. The best were men and women who could blend into any crowd. They were overlooked until they became necessary, and they rarely garnered an admiring stare.

But this man was… not handsome. Compelling. Something about him made her eyes want to linger. Lean muscle covered his frame, and despite the heat, he was clothed from head to toe, though his suit appeared to be made of linen and not some hotter material. His collar lay open, exposing the edge of an intricate tattoo. That was unusual. His hair was dark and straight, falling onto his forehead and almost into his eyes. He could use a haircut, which meant he was probably not married. She glanced at the three college-age girls who checked him out as he pretended to read a book at the cafe. He didn’t even give them a glance. Focused. He blended into the crowd admirably for someone as physically imposing as he was, but there was still something about him that drew Ava’s camera over and over again.

~~~
Okay, so reader questions:
1) Who would you pick for Malachi? Granting this could change, since you haven’t read the book yet. Feel free to google “Turkish men.” (Girls, you may thank me for this one.)
2) Do you form a specific picture in your mind when you read a character? Or is it more vague?
Teaser Tuesday: A teaser and a look at the playlist for The Scribe
So, I promised a teaser and a first look at the playlist for THE SCRIBE. Now, the majority of the music I listened to while writing this book was instrumental or atmospheric. Lots of Loreena McKennitt, Dead Can Dance, Sigur Ros. It was a very moody book, musically. So I tried to think of a song that really captured Ava and Malachi and how their relationship develops. It’s a little bit older, but I think I found it.
Bring Me To Life by Evanescence.
How can you see into my eyes like open doors?
Leading you down into my core where I’ve become so numb
Without a soul my spirit’s sleeping somewhere cold
Until you find it there and lead it back home
Wake me up inside
Wake me up inside
Call my name and save me from the dark
Bid my blood to run
Before I come undone
Save me from the nothing I’ve become
And here’s the video for the song, if you haven’t heard it:
OH WAIT!
You probably wanted that teaser, right? Well, considering that yesterday, The Scribe became eligible for pre-order on Amazon, and because within a day, you amazing readers had already already put it at #31 on the Contemporary Fantasy list, I just decided to post the entire first chapter for you.
Enjoy!
Elizabeth
Saying goodbye to Turkey and another teaser from THE SCRIBE
1014112_370047916450347_1381876560_nWell, it’s almost over. I leave Turkey tomorrow, headed back to the United States and saying goodbye to this wonderful country. This has truly been an amazing experience, following the paths of my characters in ways that many writers only dream about.
When I was young, I traveled the world by books. I read voraciously,  enamored by the settings and history that I read through the pages of mysteries and historical fiction. Action, romance, adventure, fantasy. It was the most accessible way for me to travel as a child. The fact that I’m able to travel like this–and then share those journeys through my books–is really a dream come true.
Thank you for all your support. Thanks for being the readers who support my writing so I can take trips like this. This book and series has really come alive for me, and I hope you are as excited as I am.
I’m going to have exciting audiobook news soon, along with a cover reveal for THE SCRIBE (and the cover for this book is AMAZING) in the next few weeks. I’m about 2/3 of the way through the book now and I’m looking at a fall release. Until then, here’s another short teaser with Malachi.
