Going back to the beginning: The Staff & the Blade

Warning: Looooong blog post ahead.

The Staff & the Blade is the next novel in the Irin Chronicles. As I’ve mentioned other places, this story will be Damien and Sari’s. As I’ve also mentioned, it’s giving me headaches. WHY is it giving me headaches, you may ask?

Well.

It is a universally acknowledged truth (at least by me) that when you’re writing a fantasy series, the first book is slow-going. Any time you have to build a fictional world, you’re going to have to plan. Some of that planning will happen before you ever start writing, but a lot of that planning will happen as you write because you often don’t know something is going to be an issue until it comes up in the manuscript.

So you stop and start on the first book, as you write and research and make stuff up (cause that’s what we do!), hoping that you’re not inadvertently world-building yourself into a corner you can’t see because that particular fictional room hasn’t been built yet.

Is this making any sense to you guys? It makes sense in my head. Continue reading “Going back to the beginning: The Staff & the Blade”

When you’ve lost everything you love, how do you fight the darkness?

Ava left Istanbul with a new identity, new name, and new magic she could barely control. Laid low by Malachi’s sacrifice, she searches for help from the fabled Irina. But will the secretive women of the Irin race welcome or shun her? Ava’s origins are still a mystery, and her powers are darker than any they’ve encountered before.

The Irin world hangs in the balance. And as the children of angels battle their own demons, ancient rivalries among the Fallen threaten to wreak havoc on earth.

Thousand of miles away, a warrior wakes with no memory of his identity or his people. Stumbling through the twisted schemes of fallen angels, ravenous Grigori, and even his own leaders, he must find a way back to the one thing he remembers. A single voice calls him. Malachi has one mission.

“Come back to me.”

A New Teaser from THE SINGER: Irin Chronicles Book Two

Irin Graphic 2For those of you following my self-publishing series, I was totally fail on the last post this week, so I do apologize for that. For the rest of you who are looking forward to THE SINGER (coming out on May 6th!) I have a treat for you. This is a very juicy (somewhat maddening?) teaser from Chapter Five, an excerpt from a longer scene with Rhys and Malachi. Hope you guys enjoy and have a great weekend! I’m cutting out early tomorrow to go to the Coachella Valley Music Festival with some friends, so you can look forward to lots of new writing, because we all know I thrive on the tunes.

And speaking of tunes, here’s one from the writing soundtrack to THE SINGER. “Hold On” by Sarah McLachlan is one of my favorite songs. It’s a song about loss and love. About confusion and holding on when things are uncertain. It’s a perfect song for this book, which begins with both Ava and Malachi in very dark places. Enjoy! And the teaser for the book is after the break.

Ava was still sleeping when the car came to a stop. She clenched her eyes shut, holding onto the safety of silence for as long as she could.

“Ava.”

Damien knew she was awake. The man had preternatural senses that never switched off. Ava had decided he was like a weird combination of the most over-protective dad and big brother in history. Which, being the only child of a mother who saw her more as a peer than a child, was a new and interesting experience.

She snuggled into the down filled jacket under her cheek and ignored him.

“Open your eyes. I know you’re awake. It’s going to rain in about fifteen minutes and I’d like to start up the trail before it pours.”

She lifted her head and turned to him, speaking in a scratchy voice. “I never would have let you talk me into this in Turkey if I hadn’t been such a mess.”

“But you did, and now we’re here. Get your jacket on.” READ MORE…

Character history, Tenzin, and thoughts about writing schedules.

220px-BanpoSkullLate Sunday night, I wrote a bit of Tenzin’s backstory. Now, for those of you who have read the Elemental Mysteries and know how old Tenzin is, you know that’s a lot of backstory, most of it pretty dark. I may end up publishing all or part of this. I may end up not publishing it.

So why write it?

Everyone is different, but for me? I need to know what that story is. Right now, a lot of that character’s past is rattling around in my head. I can hear it. Smell it. It’s very real to me. The way I get rid of that feeling is by writing it down. So for me, backstory serves two purposes.

The primary one is to understand your character in a way that informs your writing. I don’t think you need to write the history of every character in your book; it’s just not necessary. But you should know what made them, if they’re important. Because their past informs their actions and how they interact with other characters. They should be real people to you, so that readers connect with them on the page. That’s my opinion, anyway.

20081209174141312279852507What’s the other reason? For me, it’s a process of working a character out from under my skin. With Tenzin, there’s a lot about her that I know, and a lot I don’t. There’s a lot of time that’s left in shadow, and I think there always will be. I know she’s a favorite character for a lot of people, but you’re never going to get the whole story about her. It’s just not going to happen, even when she gets her own books. That said, I do want to give you guys something.

(Also, if you’re re-reading, take note of what Gio says about Tenzin, because he’s probably the character who knows her best, even though he doesn’t know a lot. But they spent hundreds of years working together. Hint: Tenzin is a very unreliable narrator.)

Anyway, that’s where I am about that character and that story. And for those of you who keep asking me if Tenzin and Ben are going to “end up together” (I believe someone even coined the term ‘Benzin’ over on Facebook.) I get where you’re coming from, but I’m not going to tell you. Not. Going. To. Happen. I think it’s pretty clear that their fates are intertwined, but I’m not going to say how. You’re just going to have to be patient.

So, as of right now, writing schedule looks like this:

  • Finish second Irin book.
  • Start second Cambio Springs book.
  • murkymurkyblahblahblah
  • Dribs and drabbles about Tenzin’s past interspersed with all of the above.
  • (And I’m going to China next summer, so make of that what you will.)

Banpo_Xian_6473wI used to have schedules, you guys. Then, I had three fantasy series going on at the same time. So all I can tell you know is that I will write what’s occupying my brain and go where my passion leads. I had planned to be working on the second Cambio book right now, but when all I could think about was the Irin Chonicles, working on Cambio would have been stupid. That’s just the unpredictable way that my imagination works.

There are no formulas. If it’s going to be good, it’s going to just happen when it happens. Luckily, I still write fast, so no complaining about waiting for books. (That’s not cool.) I think most writers can relate to this. You can be as disciplined as you want, but if an idea takes over your brain, it’s not going away. And what I’ve found is that it’s the ideas you’re most passionate about that lead to the best stories.

And everyone wants the best story.

P.S. I keep wanting to do a post about some great audiobooks I’ve been listening to with SmallBoy, and I keep getting sidetracked. I’m going to try to get that up later this week.

Saying goodbye to Turkey and another teaser from THE SCRIBE

1014112_370047916450347_1381876560_nWell, it’s almost over. I leave Turkey tomorrow, headed back to the United States and saying goodbye to this wonderful country. This has truly been an amazing experience, following the paths of my characters in ways that many writers only dream about.

When I was young, I traveled the world by books. I read voraciously,  enamored by the settings and history that I read through the pages of mysteries and historical fiction. Action, romance, adventure, fantasy. It was the most accessible way for me to travel as a child. The fact that I’m able to travel like this–and then share those journeys through my books–is really a dream come true.

Thank you for all your support. Thanks for being the readers who support my writing so I can take trips like this. This book and series has really come alive for me, and I hope you are as excited as I am.

I’m going to have exciting audiobook news soon, along with a cover reveal for THE SCRIBE (and the cover for this book is AMAZING) in the next few weeks. I’m about 2/3 of the way through the book now and I’m looking at a fall release. Until then, here’s another short teaser with Malachi. Pre-travel Stuff and Ramblings (Oh, and maybe the prologue for the new book…)

A few quick things.

15e62bae42d8ec4638b9e6dc635d36e91. BLOGGING Remember how I switched from posting on the Elemental Mysteries Facebook page (if you’re a FB person) to the more general Elizabeth Hunter page? I’m going to try to do that with blogging, too. I’m doing a lot more than just the Elemental Mysteries and Elemental World stuff now (and will continue to do more in the future), so this is the most practical thing for me.

I don’t want to get rid of ElementalMysteries.com. I’ll still be posting extra fiction and maybe some serial fiction over there in the future, but if you want to keep track of what’s happening with writing overall, PLEASE subscribe to this blog, not the other. It’s just too crazy to try to continue to cross-post on both. EM.com will continue to remain a fan site for Elemental World fans, featuring things specific to that series like short fiction, extra scenes, and fan art.

2. ON THE ROAD I’ll be leaving on Friday for SFINE in San Francisco, then I’ll be on the road for a while. I’ll still be blogging, Facebooking, and on the Twitter, but not as much. I’ll be traveling to Israel, Istanbul, and other parts of Turkey, so I’ll try to post some pictures so you guys can experience some of that with me. And yes, concerned readers, I am keeping up on the travel alerts for Turkey that deal with the ongoing protests. I know how to be a cautious traveler, and I’m not going by myself. Please don’t worry. Also, go democracy! I believe in the power of peaceful protest.

7c52a8f3cb4d452d96212579456fa8cd3. WRITING NEWS All the travel is research for the new book series called the Irin Chronicles. The first book, THE SCRIBE, will hopefully be out this winter. That’s all I can say right now, because I’m only half-way finished with it! But it’s looking good, my first readers are kinda going nuts about it, and this research trip should make the settings really pop. I could, conceivably, have two books in that trilogy written this summer. We’ll have to see how inspired I am.
