Ireland August 2020

11% Share!

The Irish plugin market is in good health, last month plugin sales reached 522 units, doubling last year result, with the monthly share reaching 11% (6% BEV), pulling the 2020 PEV share to 6.5% (3.8% BEV), well above the 4% score of 2019, although much of this growth has been at the expense of plugin hybrids, that have been growing twice as fast as pure electrics, with PHEVs now having 42% of the plugin market.

The 2020 Best Seller title has the Nissan Leaf resisting the pace of the Tesla Model 3, while in the last place of the podium, the Kia Niro PHEV has surpassed its Hyundai Kona EV cousin, thanks to 60 registrations.

Another Kia on the rise is the Soul EV, that joined the table in #8, now making 3 Kia's in the Top 10...Not bad, eh?

Regarding the last report, back in April, the main differences regard the thundering arrival of the Ford Kuga PHEV, replicating a phenomenon that has been happening across Europe, while the Renault Zoe jumped 6 spots regarding April, a significant improvement that rewards Renault's efforts to actively sell its EV in Europe.

Outside this Top 10, a reference for yet another Kia, with the Ceed PHEV scoring 30 deliveries last month, so we could see soon a 4th Kia model in the table, while the Peugeot 208 EV registered 15 units, benefiting from PSA's production ramp up.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Kia leads, with 20% share, followed by BMW, that due to an extended lineup, has 14% share, and Hyundai (13%) closes the podium, while outside the medal positions, we have Nissan (11%) and Tesla (10%).

Ireland April 2020

18% Share! *

* In Covid-hit market

Due to the pandemic-related lockdown, April registered just 61 plugins, representing a 85% drop, but because the overall market fared even worse (-96%!), last month plugin share reached a record 18% share, pulling (slightly) the 2020 PEV share to 5.5%, above the 4% score of 2019.

Of course, these numbers have more to do with logistic issues than anything else, but still, it is good to see that plugins are resisting the storm (slightly) better than the overall market, a trend that is being replicated in many other markets.

The 2020 title is now a three horse race, with the Nissan Leaf trying to resist the pace of the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Kona EV, while on the second half of the table, the #12 BMW X5 PHEV is on the rise, having climbed 5 spots since last January, having surpassed its stablemate BMW i3, that is now in #13, when 12 months ago, it was #6...Is the Mini Cooper EV (#21, with 21 units) stealing its thunder?

Another model underperforming is the Renault Zoe, #16 now, when a year ago it was #5...Allocation issues? Falling demand? Mmmm…

On the other hand, the Audi e-Tron is on the rise, now in #15, when in April of last year, it was #20. Expect Audi's crossover to continue slowly climbing in the table, once the Sportback body lands in the Emerald Island.

Outside the Top 20, besides the aforementioned Mini Cooper EV, a reference also to the Peugeot 208 EV, just 5 units behind the #20 Range Rover PHEV, so we could see soon two more BEVs in the Top 20, which would make 12 fully electric models in total...Fingers crossed!

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, the race is tight, with several candidates to the title, with Kia (18%) ahead, followed by Hyundai (16%), Nissan (15%), BMW (14%) and Tesla (14%), making Ireland one of the most interesting plugin markets to follow, as both the Models and Manufacturers titles have several candidates.

January Ireland 2020

Nissan is going after Hyundai's crown in hot market

January had a record 1.459 PEVs registered, with the 2020 PEV share starting at 4.7%, above the 4% score of 2019, and a significant departure from the 3.4% share of January '19.

Also significant is the fact that the mainstream market was down 4% YoY, is disruption already happening in this market?

After nearly stealing the 2017 title from the seven times Best Seller, Nissan Leaf, Hyundai finally did it in 2019, with the Hyundai Kona EV outselling the Japanese hatchback by just 8 units (1.098 units vs 1.090), with the Korean maker adding last year Manufacturers Title too.

Having lost its first Models title since 2013, Nissan wants to make sure 2020 doesn't get away, so it started the year on a strong note, by registering 296 units, and although it wasn't enough to beat the all-time monthly record (311 units, done by the Kona EV, in January '19), it was good to win a comfortable 101 units lead over the Hyundai Kona EV.

The Kia Niro PHEV started 2020 where it left off in 2019, in the 3rd spot, with 146 units, a new record for the Korean crossover, but this performance was just a part of Kia's outstanding performance in January: Besides the Niro PHEV record result, the Niro EV scored 72 units, which was the exact same amount of Niro EV units that Kia had delivered in the whole year of 2019...More impressive still, the new Kia Soul EV had 69 registrations in January, which was more units in one month than in the whole career of the small Korean crossover in Ireland...

Amazingly, the majority of models in this Top 20, 14 to be exact, scored record results, and while some of them were expected, as they are recent models (new BMW 330e, Audi e-Tron, new BMW X5 PHEV), or were recently refreshed (Hyundai Ioniq Electric, Porsche Cayenne PHEV), the truth is that some of them were unexpected, like the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, or both Volvo's and Land Rover's.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, the race is starting with several candidates to the title, with Nissan, Hyundai and Kia, all having 20% share, with the top three being followed by BMW (15%), not that far away.

Ireland October 2019

Resultado de imagem para 2019 nissan leaf ireland

15% share!!!

I had to triple check this one, because i couldn't believe my eyes, but it is true, the Irish PEV market reached a fantastic 15% share in October, pulling the 2019 share to a record 3,9%. Sure, this market is highly seasonable, so last month being a slow month in the overall market, large shares could be reached, but still…15% Share! Whoa!

It is for these kind of moments that i enjoy writing on EVS...

Moving on, the Irish PEV market registered 317 units last month, tripling last year result, with the top two scoring strong results. Ireland is known for its love for the Nissan Leaf, a seven times (2011/12/14/15/16/17/18) winner of the Best Seller trophy, but in 2019 the Nissan hatchback has a fierce competitor in the Hyundai Kona EV, leading the pack for most of the year, with the Korean Crossover once again pushing deliveries, and registering 80 units, recovering significant ground to the Japanese hatchback, just 13 units ahead.

This looks to be an interesting race to follow until the last day of December...

If the top 2 models are in a race of their own, we have an interesting development in the Top 10, with the VW e-Golf managing to overcome the Outlander PHEV and reach #5, thanks to 33 units, an amazing performance for the Volkswagen EV, especially considering that its career is less than a year away from ending.

The new BMW 330e jumped 4 positions, to #14, thanks to 24 deliveries, one unit more than its arch-rival, the also newly arrived Tesla Model 3, that is currently in #21 with 36 units, impatiently waiting to join the Top 20 and go after the BMW midsizer, this being possibly the only market where the 330e is ahead of the Californian.

Bring on the popcorn, because this will be another interesting duel to watch.

Speaking of Tesla, the Model X is now #22, with 31 units, so the SUV model could also join the Top 20 soon.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Hyundai (27%) is leading, ahead of Nissan, now with 24% share, while the rising Kia (12%) is theThird placed, comfortably ahead of Renault and BMW, both with 6% share.

Nissan Leaf recovers leadership in hot market

The Irish PEV market is known for its love for the Nissan Leaf, a seven times (2011/12/14/15/16/17/18) winner of the Best Seller trophy, but in 2019 the Nissan hatchback has some real competition, with the Hyundai Kona EV leading the pack since the year started, with the Japanese EV only recovering the leadership last month, thanks to the massive arrival of the 62 kWh version.

This is happening against the backdrop of a hot market, with sales jumping 89% last month, leading to a PEV share of 4% (3.6% in 2019), more than doubling the 2018 result.

If the top 2 models are in a race of their own, the Kia Niro PHEV, the current Best Selling PHEV, is in the 3rd spot, having beaten its own personal record last month, with 139 units.

And...That's it for good news regarding PHEVs.

The rest is a testimony to the current BEV takeover, the Renault Zoe and VW e-Golf were up one position each,  to #4 and #6, respectively, with both scoring record results, 94 units for the French model, and 36 for the German nameplate.

The Audi e-Tron was up to #18, thanks to a best ever 13 registrations, while Kia has not one, but two(!) new nameplates joining the Top 20, with the Niro EV shooting for #12, thanks to a record 51 deliveries, while the brand new Soul EV started its career in #19, also with a record performance (21 units). So, 3 Kia models scored record performances in July, not bad, eh?

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Hyundai (27%) is leading, ahead of Nissan, now with 25% share, while the rising Kia (12%) is the new Third placed, comfortably ahead of Renault and BMW, both with 6% share.

Ireland - April 2019

Hyundai takes over in red hot market

The Irish PEV market is known for its love for the Nissan Leaf, a seven times (2011/12/14/15/16/17/18) winner of the Best Seller trophy, but it seems in 2019 the Nissan crown is in danger, with the Hyundai Kona EV leading the pack since the year started, with both models now separated by 44 units.

This is happening against the backdrop of a hot market, with sales jumping 216%(!) this year, to 2.460 units, leading to a PEV share of 3,4% (4,4% in April), more than doubling the 2018 result.

If the top 2 models are in a race of their own, preparing to shatter the all-time yearly record around summertime, the Kia Niro PHEV, the current Best Selling PHEV, is in the 3rd spot, with 174 units, running ahead of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (122 unis), Renault Zoe (115), BMW i3 (107) and the heavyweight Range Rover Sport PHEV (106).

Below the top spots, a reference for the VW e-Golf, that registered 30 units in April, winning April's Bronze Medal and allowing it to jump to #8, while the Tesla Model S had a strong start of Q2, with 9 deliveries, allowing it to reach #13, and the recently landed Audi e-Tron joined the ranking, in #20.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Hyundai (30%) is also leading, ahead of the previous ruler Nissan, now with only 25% share, while BMW is 3rd (8%), with Kia (7%) not far off.

Ireland January 2019

Resultado de imagem para Hyundai kona EV ireland

Hyundai is going after Nissan's crown in red hot market

January had 1.111 PEVs registered, by far the best in Ireland, with sales up 292%(!) YoY, and the 2019 PEV share starting at a record 3.4%.

Also significant is the fact that the mainstream market was down 13% YoY, is disruption already happening in this market?

After nearly stealing the 2017 title from the seven times Best Seller Nissan Leaf, Hyundai is at it again, and this time with a new model, the Hyundai Kona EV, that outsold the Japanese hatchback in January, with a new all-time record of 311 deliveries, being the first time in 11 months that someone has beaten the Nissan EV.

The Renault Zoe is a distant Third, with 77 registrations, while the #4 Kia Niro PHEV was the Best Selling PHEV, with 71 units.

Below the top spots, a few worthy mentions, the BMW i3 scored a record 42 deliveries in January, registering in only one month what it usually does in one year...once again, the "larger battery = higher sales" formula gets proven.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV did even better, as last month 44 sales represented not only the nameplate's best month ever, but has already beaten the best year ever for the Japanese SUV in Ireland (2015, with 40 units). Again, larger battery = higher sales...

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Hyundai started in the lead, with 33% share, followed by Nissan (27%), while BMW (9%) is Third, and Renault (7%) is Fourth, closelly followed by Kia (6%).

Ireland November 2018

King Leaf in hot market

The Irish PEV market is known by its love for the Nissan Leaf, with the BEV model having won six times (2011/12/14/15/16/17) the Best Seller trophy, and with 1 in 2 plug-ins in Ireland being a Leaf, one could even say that the Nissan Hatchback is an honorary Irish citizen.

With the arrival of the new Generation, the trend has continued, with the Japanese hatchback now owning 40% of this year PEV market.

This is currently a hot market, with sales up 107% YoY, and the PEV share up to a record 1.6%, with November alone hitting 5%(!) market share, a new all-time high, even if the base was small, as in all, only 644 units were sold in the Irish automotive market last month.

But it isn't only the Leaf benefitting from the favorable winds, the BMW 530e is the new Second Placed, becoming at the same time the Best Selling PHEV, thanks to 149 deliveries in 2018, up four fold regarding the previous year.

Below the podium, a few worthy mentions, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is now #14, benefitting from the new revised version, while the Volvo S/V90 PHEV twins joined the ranking, in #20.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Nissan is frankly ahead of the competition, with 40% share, while BMW (17%) is Second, while Kia (8%) and Hyundai (7%) are running for #3.

King Leaf in record shattering month

The Irish PEV market is known by its love for the Nissan Leaf, with the BEV model having won six times (2011/12/14/15/16/17) the Best Seller trophy, and with 1 in 2 plug-ins in Ireland being a Leaf, one could even say that the Nissan Hatchback is an honorary Irish citizen...

And with the arrival of the new Generation, the trend has accentuated, last month the Japanese hatchback blew to pieces every previous monthly record, having delivered 305 units, which is almost three times more than the previous single model monthly record (119 units by the same Leaf, in February '16), helping the market reach new heights, with a total of 527 units in one month, doubling the previous record of 219 units, set last April.

This brilliant result catapulted the July share to a record 2%, with the 2018 share now at 1.3% market share, a new all-time high.

But it wasn't only the Leaf that benefitted from the favorable winds, the Kia Niro PHEV scored a record 56 deliveries in July, allowing it to jump into Second Place, while becoming at the same time the Best Selling PHEV and Rookie of the Year.

Below the podium, a few worthy mentions, like the Renault Zoe registering a record 22 units, allowing it to climb to #7, while the VW e-Golf also hit an all-time best of 22 units, tying with the Volvo XC90 PHEV in #8.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Nissan is frankly ahead of the competition, with 38% share, while BMW is Second (16%), and Kia and Hyundai, both with 8% share, are running for #3, with Kia ahead by only 4 units.

New Leaf takes over in record market

The Irish PEV market is known for its love for the Nissan Leaf, a six times (2011/12/14/15/16/17) winner of the Best Seller trophy, and with the arrival of the new Leaf, things could only get better.

And so it did, with the Japanese hatchback sales growing 12% YoY, helping the market reach new heights, like the 219 units registered last month, a new record, or the current 1% market share, a new all-time high.

The BMW 530e, Best Selling Rookie last year, is now Second Placed, with 86 units, while last year runner-up, the Hyundai Ioniq Electric, is now Third, with 74 deliveries.

Below the podium, reference for the new Kia Niro PHEV, Second in April, with 29 registrations, and the Tesla Model S, Third last month with 16 deliveries, the nameplate best performance ever in Ireland, with the peculiar fact that it happened on the usually slow first month of the quarter, giving strength to the theory that Tesla is focusing Model S/X deliveries for Q2 in export markets.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Nissan is ahead of the competition (25%), while BMW is a close Second (23%), with Hyundai (11%) closing the podium.

Nissan Leaf #1 for the Sixth Time

The Irish PEV market is known for the popularity of the Nissan Leaf, and despite a tough 2017, with the 2018 Leaf in the people minds and Hyundai Ioniq Electric running neck-to-neck most of the year, the five times (2011/12/14/15/16) Best Selling model, managed to win its sixth Best Seller title, the fourth in a row.

This two horse race helped the local PEV market to grow, with the 2017 sales up 40% to 945 units, with the PEV share now at over 0.6%, a new record.

Below the Top 2, the BMW 330e won another medal, having won Silver in 2016, this time the medal was Bronze.

The official arrival of Tesla to Ireland in 2017 allowed it to sell 51 units last year, which is three times more than what it had sold until then.

Looking at the manufacturers ranking, Nissan won the race to Hyundai (27% vs 24%), while BMW was a comfortable Third, with 18% share.
