Compassion

Compassion
without a kind face
and open hands
is but a wisp of smoke
dissipating in the wind.

In God We Trust

planets-1068198_1280
In God we trust.
And in case you don’t
get the point,
we’ll surround ourselves
with the highest walls
and deadliest missiles
to make it perfectly clear.

Love of Neighbor

If I am awake
to the Divine Presence
in you as well as in me,
loving you as myself
loses its wiggle room.

A Hidden God

God is a hidden God
only to those who do not
have the “eyes to see”
his presence in all things,
within and without.

Acts of Kindness

water-719168_1280

If we do not see ourselves
as one with the whole,
our acts of kindness
may become notches
on our ego’s belt
or increasingly tiresome
burdens that eventually
begin to weigh us down
and incite resentment.

Like the Birds

Blessed are they
who have learned,
like the birds,
to adjust their flight,
with minimal effort,
to the winds of change.

Each Day

sunset-1046475_1280

Don’t rely
on old songs
to keep a snap
in your step.
Each day writes
a new melody
begging for
new lyrics.

Celebration

She whirled before me, guileless,
eager face straining for the sky,
light rain chiseling a smile
glorious on glistening cheeks.
She extended her arms full-length
in opposite directions, flat palms
and feathery fingers seemingly
practiced in the art of soaring.
Moments before, she broke loose
from the boughs of my umbrella,
to announce an eight-year-old’s vision
and credo: I gotta be free!

Longing to join the gambol
but hobbled by an arthritic hip
and the rust of years given
to caution and conformity, I settle
for silence and reverent awe
in the presence of this young
priestess and her primal
celebration of life.
