Cost of 200 disasters in the U.S. exceeds $1.1 trillion
Some 200 weather and climate disasters have occurred in the U.S. since 1980, each exceeding $1 billion (including CPI adjustment to 2016) in overall damages/costs. The total cost of these 200 events exceeds $1.1 trillion, according to NCDC/NOAA.
Some 12 weather and climate disaster events with losses exceeding $1 billion each across the United States have occurred this year (as of September), exceeding the 1980–2015 annual average of 5.2 events (CPI-adjusted); the annual average for the most recent 5 years (2011–2015) is 10.8 events (CPI-adjusted).
Four new billion-dollar disaster events have been added during the 3rd quarter, bringing the 2016 event total to 12. This represents the 2nd highest total number of events surpassing the 11 events observed in 2012. The record number of events in one year (since 1980) is 16, as observed in 2011.
The U.S. has also experienced 4 billion-dollar inland flood events during 2016, doubling the previous record, as no more than 2 inland flood events have occurred in a year since 1980. This is a notable record, further highlighted by the numerous other record flooding events that have impacted the U.S. in 2016.

Hailstones measuring up to 15 cm batter Vietnam province
Some 1,000 houses were damaged and 100 hectares of crops destroyed in Vietnam’s Tuyen Quang province on Sunday in the region’s worst hailstorm in 30 years, said a report.
Huge hailstones fell for eight minutes early Sunday, punching holes roofs and injuring farmers on their way to work.
On Monday, hailstorms damaged about 4,300 houses in the northern highlands and 90 others in the Central Highlands Tuesday, “while a storm destroyed more houses in the south.”
Crops were reportedly destroyed in Ha Lang and Ha Quang Districts.
“In Dong Nai Province near Ho Chi Minh City, a rainstorm, thought to be the biggest ever to hit the province, collapsed or blew off the roofs of more than 230 houses and damaged crops,” said a report.

Crop Disaster Declared for Colorado Counties due to Hailstorm
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has declared crop disasters for six counties in the state of Colorado due to damages and losses caused by a hailstorm that occurred on July 16, 2014.
Those counties are Otero, Bent, Crowley, Kiowa, Las Animas and Pueblo.
Crop Disasters 2014
Beginning January 10, 2014 USDA has declared crop disasters in at least 2,667 counties across 41 states. Most of those designations are due to drought.
Those states are
- Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Notes:
i. USDA trigger point for a countywide disaster declaration is 30 percent crop loss on at least one crop.
ii. The counties designated as agricultural disaster areas, as listed above, include both primary and contiguous disaster areas.
iii. Counties may have been designated crop disaster areas more than once due to multiple disasters.
iv. The U.S. has a total of 3,143 counties and county-equivalents.
v. The disaster designations posted above were approved by USDA on October 15, 2014.

Sao Paulo Roads flooded as storm dumps “mountains” of hailstorm
A ferocious storm dumped more than 10cm of moisture in the form of large hail on Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest city.
“Residents in Såo Paulo wondered at the ice balls that decorated their yards and gardens even up to early Monday,” reported AP. “Some told local news media that their children had never seen hail or played with ice before Sunday’s storm.”
However, the storm did very little to raise water levels at Såo Paulo’s reservoirs. The main reservoir has reportedly sunk below 10% of its capacity, the lowest level on record.
Under the circumstances, water rationing could be the only option left for the city of 22 million (metro population) just weeks ahead of the World Cup games in Brazil.
Såo Paulo is the largest city in the southern hemisphere and world’s 7th largest city by population.

Huge Hailstones Hammer Hong Kong
Hong Kong residents have been warned of more extreme weather as torrential rains and near hurricane-force winds batter the region.
Hong Kong Observatory issued the “Black Rainstorm” warning, their highest, after the system dumped more than 70mm of rain over Hong Kong Island and Kowloon in less than an hour, causing flash flooding.
The system unleashed fierce thunderstorms accompanied by 8,703 lightning strikes, with more than 3,500 in an one hour, said the observatory.
“Because of a low pressure trough affecting the south east region of Guangdong, we are expecting the region to continue to be affected with this weather over the next couple of days,” said a senior forecaster at the Observatory, warning of more thunderstorms, heavy rain, high winds , flooding and landslides.
“Over the next few days, heavier rain is expected to persist around the coastal region, including Hong Kong.”

Golf ball-sized hail destroy crops, smash windows in Canterbury, New Zealand
Massive hail stones tore across mid-Canterbury, New Zealand, destroying crops and smashing scores of windows, said a report.
A fierce storm moving north along the South Island triggered a hailstorm dumping large hail on Mayfield, near Ashburton, for about 50 minutes.
The hailstorm broke scores of windows at homes and businesses across the township, residents said.
“Local crop farmer Rab McDowell predicted about 40 per cent of his carrot and maize crops were a ‘right off,’ but he would know more in the morning.”
“I haven’t seen hail through here that broke windows before,” he said.
Golf ball-sized hail falls on Southern Downs, QLD. Australia
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued a severe thunderstorm warning covering the entire Darling Downs in southern QLD, and surrounding areas earlier today.
There were reports of golf ball-sized hail falling at Dalveen near Stanthorpe, said local reports.
On November 19, 2013, golf ball-sized hail bucketed down on Australia’s Gold Coast causing substantial damage to buildings, trees and crops.
Several hailstorms across parts of South Africa also produced golf ball-sized hail stones on 12, 14 and 28 of November 2013 causing major damage to property and crops.

Massive explosion derails Russian cargo train, forces mass evacuation
Dozens of people have been injured after a massive explosion derailed a cargo train in southern Russia sending more than 50 fuel tanks off the tracks and setting off a huge blaze, which forced about 3,000 people to evacuate nearby area.
- “Over 50 rail cars of a 71-car-long cargo train derailed at the Belaya Kalitva station in Russia’s Rostov region at around 2 am local time,” said a report.
- Interfax news agency quoted an official representative of the North Caucasian railway as saying the derailment had caused a propane gas leak, which engulfed the locomotive.
- “According to preliminary information, there was no explosion, instead, the tank caught fire,” the source has said.

“Multiple supercell thunderstorms moved across the Northern and Eastern Midlands during the late afternoon and evening hours on Saturday, April 9, 2011. … A few storms moved across Kershaw and Sumter counties also dropping very large hail, up to baseball size near Dalzell. “We thought a big white sheet had been spread, so we decided to come and see for ourselves. We thought that it was Jesus who had come back,” a villager said.
“The hailstones falling on the ground joined together to form expansive sheets of ice or snow flakes occupying a large area, 30 acres,” meteorologists said. the storm was caused “the convergence of cold air currents from the Indian Ocean and warm air currents from the Congo.”
“In fact this thing is very sweet, we have never seen anything like this. We like the ice so much because with the sun being hot, you take it and you feel satisfied,” another villager said.
Kenya straddles the equator. “The only snow to be seen in normally sunny Kenya is on top of the country’s highest mountain, 5,199-meter (17,057 ft) Mount Kenya.” Reuters said.
