About the Bit List
A free-to-access and open resource for digital preservation advocacy, the Digital Preservation Coalition's (DPC) Global Bit List of Endangered Digital Materials (or Bit List for short) is a community-sourced list of at-risk digital materials which is revised every two years.
Entries to the list are nominated by the community, who are at the forefront of digital preservation efforts, and reviewed by the Bit List Council of international organizations which represent global expertise in the preservation of the listed digital species.
By compiling and maintaining the Bit List, the DPC aims to equip digital preservation practitioners with independent evidence that digital materials are critically endangered, and that action is required, in order to support their targeted advocacy efforts.
Feedback for the current Bit List
If you have any corrections, comments or feedback about the
the Bit List 2023 or the Bit List report 2025, please complete Section 3 of this form ('
Bit List General Feedback').
New Nominations to the Bit List
If you would to nominate a new entry for the next planned revision of Bit List, please complete Section 4 of this form ('Bit List Nomination').
- Bit List nominations will be collated and evaluated by an international panel of experts in digital preservation in our next round of review. Please note, your nomination may be aggregated or re-ordered as part of that process.
- You can submit nominations for the Bit List using this form multiple times, once for every type of digital material you consider to be at risk, but the form should be completed in one go, so it's best if you start with all your information to hand. If you have everything ready - each submission should take you about 15 minutes to complete.
- We will also ask you about yourself, about the digital materials you consider at risk, the nature of the risks, the significance of the materials and the impact of the loss. It is possible to use the Bit List to highlight gaps between policy and practice. We can offer confidentiality to whistleblowers if you think you need it and you will have a chance to ask for that.
