Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ; by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. (Rom_5:1, Rom_5:2)
When God forgives the sinner, remits to him the punishment he deserves, and treats him as if he had never sinned, He receives him into divine favour and justifies him by the merits of Christ’s righteousness. The sinner can only be justified by faith in the atonement made by the dear Son of God who became a sacrifice for the sins of the guilty world. No one can be justified by any work of his own. Only by virtue of the sufferings, death, resurrection of Christ can he be delivered from the guilt of sin, from the condemnation of the law, from the penalty of transgression. Faith is the only condition by which justification can be obtained, and faith includes not only belief but trust….
The sinner is represented with a lost sheep, and a lost sheep never returns to the fold unless it is sought and brought back by the shepherd. No one can repent of himself and become worthy of the blessing of justification. The Lord Jesus constantly seeks to impress the sinner’s mind and draw him to the contemplation of Him, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. We cannot take a step into spiritual life unless Jesus draws and strengthens the soul, and leads us into the experience of repentance from which no one need repent….
The faith that is unto salvation is not a casual faith, not a mere assent of the intellect, but a belief rooted in the heart, that takes Christ as a personal Saviour…. When the soul lays hold of Christ as the only hope of salvation, genuine faith is manifested. This faith leads its possessor to place all the affections of the soul upon Christ.
