Giovanna's stitches

Well, this year I made it to Paris with my stitching buddies 🙂 As always, we first of all went to the Aiguille en Fête show and enhanced our stashes. The exhibitions featured spectacular examples of Indian needlework, very pretty needle painting by Margaret Lee, work by contemporary needle artists, and various guild projects.

Dopo la pausa forzata dell’anno scorso, quest’anno sono riuscita ad andare a Parigi con le mie amiche ricamine 🙂 Come sempre, il primo impegno è stato andare alla fiera Aiguille en Fête a fare acquisti. Le mostre in fiera comprendevano degli spettacolari ricami indiani, bellissime pitture ad ago di Margaret Lee, altri artisti di ricamo contemporaneo, e diversi lavori di associazioni.

Here is my stash enhancement. Apart from the black scissors (Merchant & Mills – not present at the show, but there was a stall selling their products) and the red-handled scissors (Bohin), all the others are from Monsieur Roulot. The yarn was a gift from my friends Maura and Anna Maria (thank you, my dears!) The totes were bought elsewhere in Paris – a stitcher can never have too many totes, and these were just the right size to hold a project or two.

Ecco i miei acquisti. A parte quelle nere (di Merchant & Mills – non presenti in fiera, ma c’era uno stand che vendeva i loro prodotti) e quelle coi manici rossi (Bohin), tutte le altre forbici sono di Monsieur Roulot. I gomitoli di lana mi sono stati regalati da Maura e Anna Maria (grazie, amiche mie!) Le borse le ho acquistate in giro per Parigi – una ricamatrice non può mai averne troppe, e queste erano proprio della misura giusta per fare da portalavoro.

And then there was Paris. Donatella, Cristina and I decided to walk up the Eiffel Tower – you can only reach the second level on foot, but it’s absolutely worth not taking the lift because you really get a good look at the wonderful structure. We were keen to go because we wanted to see the new glass floors on the first level – which were fun, but not quite as spectacular as we’d been expecting. Not that that stopped Donatella from putting on a show…

E poi c’era Parigi. Con Donatella e Cristina sono salita a piedi sulla Torre Eiffel – con le scale si raggiungono solo i primi due livelli, ma vale la pena rinunciare all’ascensore per vedere bene la fantastica struttura. Ci tenevamo ad andarci per vedere i nuovi pavimenti di vetro del primo livello – che sono divertenti, ma non proprio spettacolari come c’eravamo immaginate. Non che questo abbia impedito a Donatella di fare un po’ di spettacolo…

We also went to the Musée Picasso. I have to admit that not all of his art is to my liking, but lots of it is, and he was a very productive and eclectic artist. The Museum is a real treasure house. Here are some details that struck me (apologies for the occasional reflection).

Siamo andate anche al Musée Picasso. Devo ammettere che non tutte le sue opere mi piacciono, ma molte sì, ed era comunque un artista molto produttivo ed eclettico. Il Museo è proprio un forziere colmo di gioielli. Ecco alcuni dettagli che mi hanno colpita (scusandomi per i riflessi).

My stitching buddies and I have had great exposure to stitching and to each other this weekend. Saturday saw a minor mass migration to Formigine, for the Fili senza Tempo fair. Our friend Elisa of Giochi di Filo was there (she’s the red-head in the middle), with a gorgeous stall, where we proceeded to enhance our stashes in the most shameless fashion.

Con le amiche ricamine è stato un fine settimana molto intenso. Sabato ci ha visto migrare in massa a Formigine per la festa Fili senza Tempo. C’era la nostra amica Elisa di Giochi di Filo (la rossa nel mezzo della foto), con un banchetto spettacolare, dove abbiamo proceduto ad aumentare le nostre scorte senza alcuna vergogna.

Actually, there were lots of great stalls… besides the designers I knew already, I was particularly thrilled to find Sara, and Le Lin d’Isabelle (a new discovery for me – very elegant and soft-coloured designs). It’s a small-size fair, but the quality of the offerings is consistently very high, and the small scale makes interaction with the designers/sellers very easy and pleasant – the ideal event.

A dire il vero c’erano tanti stand bellissimi… oltre alle disegnatrici che già conoscevo, mi ha entusiasmato trovare Sara, e Le Lin d’Isabelle (una scoperta nuova per me – schemi di eleganza unica e dai colori delicatissimi). Non è una manifestazione molto grande, ma l’offerta è di qualità omogeneamente molto alta, e le dimensioni ridotte favoriscono un’interazione molto piacevole con le disegnatrici/venditrici – insomma, è l’evento ideale.

This is part of the stash: I got the stack of linen cuts, the linen-band bracelet kit, and the gorgeous Tartan scissors (made by Premax) from Giochi di Filo; the overdyed linens and black scissors (pounced on bought the last 2 pairs!) from Niky; the pins and the little bag of buttons from 4 Cupcake Addicted; the adorable stuffed bunny from My Country Nest; the Bonheur chart (with large-check linen and green overdyed thread) from Red House by the Willow Tree; the flowery wooden buttons, pink overdyed thread, and overdyed lace from Romy’s Creations; and the bird+rose charm from Lilli Violette. The owl pincushion at the back was made by my friend Katia (Giochi di Filo has them too).

Ecco parte del bottino: ho preso il pacchetto di tagli di lino, il kit per il braccialetto da fare col nastro di lino, e le fantastiche forbicine a fantasia scozzese (della Premax) da Giochi di Filo; i lini invecchiati e le forbicine nere (ho arraffato acquistato le ultime due paia!) da Niky; gli spilli e la bustina di bottoni da 4 Cupcake Addicted; l’adorabile coniglietto di pezza da My Country Nest; lo schema Bonheur (con lino a scacchi e filo sfumato verde) da Red House by the Willow Tree; i bottoncini di legno a fiorellini, il filo sfumato rosa e il pizzo sfumato da Romy’s Creations; e il charm con l’uccellino e la rosa da Lilli Violette. Il puntaspilli con il gufo in fondo alla foto l’ha fatto la mia amica Katia (anche Giochi di Filo li tiene).

So that was Saturday… On Sunday some stitching buddies from another part of Italy, who have come with us to Paris several times, were very welcome visitors to our home turf for the first time ever. Nicoletta very generously hosted us all at her place, for a day of intense chatter, intense stitching, and intense food (she took the picture shown above – I’m right at the back in the stripey sweatshirt). Katia’s terrific ice cream was part of the package – bad for the waistline, but unanimously praised to the same level as another well-known sensory experience by everyone present. Definitely something we have to do again… My Christmas at Hollyberry Farm by Stacy Nash benefited from the session, and reached the stage shown below. A big thank you to Nicoletta, and to all of my friends, for the lovely days!

Questo è quanto per il sabato… domenica invece abbiamo avuto, per la prima volta, la graditissima visita di un piccolo gruppo di ricamine venete, che vengono sempre con noi a Parigi. Molto generosamente, Nicoletta ci ha ospitate tutte a casa sua, per una giornata di intense chiacchiere, intense crocette, e intenso cibo (l’ha fatta lei la foto sopra – io sono in fondo con la felpa a strisce). Parte del pacchetto era il fantastico gelato di Katia – un attentato alla linea, ma unanimemente elevato allo stesso livello di un’altra nota forma di piacere da tutte le presenti. Decisamente un’esperienza da ripetere… Ne ha beneficiato il mio Christmas at Hollyberry Farm di Stacy Nash, che adesso ha l’aspetto che vedete in basso. Un grazie immenso a Nicoletta, e a tutte le mie amiche, per le splendide giornate!

Looking out of our houseboat, on the first morning

And we’re back! It was great to be in Paris again, and what great fun we had. We stayed in the same houseboat as last year, just a stone’s throw away from the Eiffel Tower. But this time the level of the Seine was higher, meaning that the walkway to the boat’s deck was too high to step on from the shore. Sooooo… enter the stepladder: getting on and off the boat became… well… interesting.

Siamo tornate! La spedizione a Parigi è stata bellissima anche quest’anno, e ci siamo divertite da matti. Abbiamo affittato lo stesso barcone dell’anno scorso, all’ombra della Torre Eiffel. Ma quest’anno il livello della Senna si era alzato, portando in alto la passerella di accesso. Quindi? Vai di scaletta a pioli: salire e scendere dal barcone è stato… interessante.

Houston, we have a problem…

Once everyone was safely off the boat, we could go off to the Aiguille en Fête show. This year it was held in a new location – which was not an improvement. The only advantage I could find in the change was that the place was closer to our lodgings, and therefore quicker to reach. Other than that: a much less pleasant building, cramped, and way too warm. The crowd was extremely thick right from the word go, and getting to see the stalls properly was impossible. Things calmed down in the late afternoon, by which time I was really tired and way less efficient in my exploring. Still, I managed to increase my stash significantly 🙂 The show itself is wonderful, but I got the impression that the amount of cross stitch stalls is slowly decreasing from year to year – it’s been a bit upsetting, the past couple of shows, to not find some of our favourite stalls, and the trend continued this year.

Una volta scese felicemente sulla terraferma, siamo andate all’Aiguille en Fête. Quest’anno si svolgeva in una sede diversa – e francamente non se ne sono visti i vantaggi, a parte una maggiore vicinanza al barcone. Per il resto: un edificio molto meno piacevole, più claustrofobico, e davvero troppo caldo. La ressa è stata pazzesca fin dalle prime ore, e non era possibile visitare gli stand per bene. La folla si è diradata solo nel tardo pomeriggio, quando ormai ero stanca e poco lucida nell’esplorare. Sono riuscita comunque a fare dei buoni danni 🙂 La fiera in sè rimane fantastica, ma ho avuto la netta impressione che l’offerta del punto croce stia diminuendo da un anno all’altro – è stato un po’ deludente, queste ultime volte, non ritrovare alcuni dei nostri venditori preferiti, e la tendenza sembra continuare.

This is a wonderful book! Lots of adorable Paris-themed charts. When I showed it to my buddies, there suddenly was this small but frightening platoon of Italian females bowling over anyone unfortunate enough to be in the way, in their haste to get to their copies. We signed each other’s books as a memento of the trip.

Questo libro è fantastico! Un vero tesoro di bellissimi schemi in tema parigino. Quando l’ho mostrato alle mie amiche, un piccolo ma impressionante plotone di donne italiane ha improvvisamente travolto chiunque avesse la sventura di trovarsi nel suo percorso, per la fretta che avevano di raggiungere le loro copie. Ognuna ha firmato i libri delle altre, come ricordo del viaggio.
