Giovanna's stitches

Another month gone by, sigh… I’ve had a lot happening on many fronts (work, family, life…), so stitching has pretty much been on the back burner. Nevertheless, she persisted. And just about managed to finish another block in the Frosty Forest stitch-along. This one takes me past the halfway mark, which is good: 5 blocks down, 4 to go. I hope this coming month will see more stitching done – happy June, everyone.

È passato un altro mese, sigh… Con tanti impegni su diversi fronti (lavoro, famiglia, vita…), le crocette sono state alquanto trascurate. Sono riuscita almeno a completare un altro riquadro nel SAL Frosty Forest. Con questo sono arrivata oltre la metà, che è un’ottima notizia: 5 riquadri fatti, 4 da fare. Spero vivamente che il prossimo mese mi veda produrre più crocette – buon giugno a tutti.

This has got to be one of the most beautiful gates in the world, and it’s so well rendered on such a small scale in Blackbird Designs’ Strawberry Fields Forever. I hadn’t touched this project for a while, and it’s a real joy to be stitching on it again.

Dev’essere uno dei cancelli più belli del mondo, ed è reso a meraviglia su questa scala così ridotta in Strawberry Fields Forever di Blackbird Designs. Non toccavo questo lavoro da un po’, ed è una vera gioia riprenderlo in mano.

Really???

I’m sorry, folks, this has nothing to do with stitching, for once. This is, in fact, just a gentle message to my blogging friends who (a) are on Blogger, and (b) have a word recognition function on their comment form. So, if you don’t fall in that category, please feel free to move on.

Dear fellow bloggers, I regret to inform you that Blogger’s new word recognition system is frustrating and time-consuming to the point that I’m giving up!! I have spent way too much time squinting at obscene squiggles such as the above, sometimes wasting several attempts before managing to reproduce them successfully – time I could use in much more entertaining ways, such as stitching or reading more blogs. I refuse to cooperate any further with this idiotic system: as much as I enjoy leaving even just a token sign of my passage on your blogs, I will not do so any more if this is what I have to face. I will, of course, continue to read your blogs whenever they’re updated. I’m sorry to seem rude, and I won’t be offended if you decide to reciprocate by not commenting here any longer: please know that I really regret having to do this. Thank you for your understanding.

Scusate, gente, per una volta scrivo un post che non ha nulla a che fare con le crocette. Si tratta di un messaggio alle autrici dei blog che seguo che (a) sono su Blogger, e (b) hanno la funzione captcha attivata per i commenti. Se non fate parte di questa categoria, sentitevi libere di passare oltre.

Care amiche blogghine, mi dispiace molto informarvi che il nuovo sistema captcha di Blogger mi sta causando talmente tanta frustrazione e perdita di tempo che ci rinuncio!! Ho passato troppo tempo a fissare intensamente sgorbi osceni come quelli nella figura sopra, sprecando spesso diversi tentativi prima di riprodurli correttamente – tempo che potrei spendere in attività più divertenti, come le crocette o visitando altri blog. Mi rifiuto di piegarmi bovinamente a questo sistema demenziale: per quanto mi faccia piacere lasciare un segno anche solo simbolico del mio passaggio sui vostri blog, smetterò di farlo se questo è quello che devo affrontare. Ovviamente continuerò a leggervi quando aggiornate. Mi dispiace molto sembrare scortese, e non mi offenderò se per questo deciderete di astenervi dal lasciare commenti qui: credetemi, non avrei mai voluto dover arrivare a questo. Am I lucky, or what? Sometime ago I won a draw on Anne’s blog, for a set of pretty threads. Yesterday, coming home in a grumpy mood because of the pouring rain, there was a letter from Australia (ah yes, Down Under: sun… warmth… mood improves) waiting in the mailbox. Inside: not just the threads, but a lovely, sunny card, and… one of Anne’s gorgeous beaded fobs! Grumpyness instantly extinguished – thank you, Anne, for bringing sunshine to this dreary Monday!

Ma sarò fortunata? Qualche tempo fa ho vinto dei fili sfumati molto carini sul blog di Anne. Ieri, tornando a casa di malumore per la pioggia a catinelle, trovo nella buchetta una busta dall’Australia (e pensando al sole e al caldo dell’emisfero australe… già l’umore migliora). Nella busta: non solo i fili, ma anche un bel biglietto solare, e… uno degli splendidi trovaforbici creati da Anne! Malumore dileguato all’instante – grazie mille, Anne, per avere portato il sole a questo grigissimo lunedì!

At last, I got my act together (haven’t I been saying that a lot lately?) and started the pre-stitching for the Nantucket Cottage class which I’ll be taking in London. This is what I’ve done of the cottage’s roof so far – isn’t that a gorgeous overdyed thread used for the long stitches? What’s peeping out from under the linen are the designer’s photographs of the project, not my own stitching. I’m very excited about going to a CA Wells class, as, for years now, I’ve been admiring many of her projects made by other stitchers. This little cottage is just my cup of tea, though I can see that it will become challenging too. And I’ll be in excellent company: she’s done a lot more stitching than I have so far – how about posting some pictures, Paola?

Finalmente mi sono data una mossa (non lo sto dicendo un po’ troppo spesso ultimamente?) e ho cominciato il ricamo per la classe Nantucket Cottage, a cui mi sono iscritta tempo fa, e che si svolgerà a Londra. Ecco dove sono arrivata con il tetto della casina – non è incantevole quel filo multicolore usato per i punti lanciati? Quello che spunta da sotto il lino sono foto fornite dalla disegnatrice, non qualcosa che ho ricamato io. Ho una gran voglia di partecipare a una classe di CA Wells, di cui ammiro da anni i progetti realizzati da altre ricamatrici. Questa casina l’ho trovata irresistibile, anche se mi rendo conto che certi passaggi non mi risulteranno facilissimi. E comunque sarò in ottima compagnia: lei è molto più avanti di me col ricamo – che ne dici di farci vedere delle foto, Paola?

Where the gathering took place

Another day out with the stitching buddies yesterday: this time near Arezzo, in Tuscany, where the Festa del Ricamo took place, organized by the internet-based store Casa Cenina. There are always designers present at this event. This year, which was the first time I managed to go, I was delighted when it was announced that Cynthia Zittel of The Drawn Thread – one of my favourite designers – would be among the guests. Plus several other designers. And, of course, ample stash-enhancing possibilities would be available. The latter took place under the marquee shown in the pic above, in this beautiful Tuscan setting. Don’t be fooled by the lovely blue sky: I took the picture at the end of the day (hence the lack of people), and it actually rained buckets most of the time – but hey, who cares when you’re safely under a marquee, stash-enhancing to your heart’s content?

Un’altra giornata di evasione con le amiche del gruppo: questa volta vicino ad Arezzo, alla Festa del Ricamo organizzata da Casa Cenina. Quest’anno ci andavo per la prima volta, e non vedevo l’ora, sapendo che tra le disegnatrici ospiti ci sarebbe stata Cynthia Zittel di The Drawn Thread, una delle mie preferite. E anche altre disegnatrici. Per non parlare della possibilità di fare ampie scorte… Quest’ultima si consumava sotto i gazebo visibili nella foto, nel bel paesaggio toscano. Non vi fate ingannare dall’incantevole cielo azzurro: l’ho scattata alla fine della giornata (quando ormai l’ampia folla era scomparsa), e in realtà è venuta giù un sacco di acqua – ma ce ne poteva importare di meno, a noi che all’asciutto sotto i gazebo eravamo intente a fare scorte?

Another guest was French designer Marie-Thérèse Saint-Aubin, and we were all fascinated by her very unique designs – I just loved the snails on the partly “eaten” linen (see below). I bought one of her latest books, and she very kindly signed it with a very extended dedication.

Fra gli ospiti c’era anche la disegnatrice francese Marie-Thérèse Saint-Aubin, e siamo rimaste tutte incantate dalle sue creazioni – favolose le chiocciole sul tessuto “smangiucchiato” (vedi sotto). Non ho resistito ad uno dei suoi ultimi libri, e lei è stata gentilissima a fare a tutte una dedica molto particolare.

And then, of course, Cynthia Z. (who gave a lecture on how to make a padded pincushion to put inside a box, and how to join back-stitched edges). My goodness, I could have looked at her models for hours and hours… when I saw Moonlight Garden I instantly scampered off to buy it as if possessed. And it was so nice to chat to her. And yes, I know I look goofy in the picture below, but it’s the only one of the group in which nobody was blinking.

E parliamo di Cynthia Z., che ha anche fatto una breve classe su come fare un puntaspilli da inserire in un cofanetto, e come fare un orlo unendo i contorni a punto scritto. Santo cielo, avrei potuto guardare i suoi ricami per ore e ore… appena ho notato Moonlight Garden mi sono fiondata a comprarlo come una posseduta. Ed è stato così piacevole chiacchierare un po’ con lei. E lo so che ho un’espressione demenziale nella foto sotto, ma era l’unica di quelle fatte al gruppetto in cui avevamo tutte gli occhi aperti.
