Massachusetts Health Reform: Pathetic, Sick, Ugly
September 17, 2007

From the Globe’s op-ed page today, a column by Dr. Steffie Woolhandler and Dr.David U. Himmelstein about the dumbass Mass healthcare bill, brought to us by Mitt Romney, with the aid of a legislature that can only be called corrupt or stupid or bought and paid for by the insurance industry.

Pertinent paragraphs:

And 244,000 of Massachusetts uninsured get zero assistance – just a stiff fine if they don’t buy coverage. A couple in their late 50s faces a minimum premium of $8,638 annually, for a policy with no drug coverage at all and a $2,000 deductible per person before insurance even kicks in. Such skimpy yet costly coverage is, in many cases, worse than no coverage at all. Illness will still bring crippling medical bills –  but the$8,638 annual premium will empty their bank accounts even before the bills start arriving. Little wonder that barely 2 percent of those required to buy such coverage have thus far signed up.

While the middle class sinks, the health reform law has buoyed our state’s wealthiest health institutions. Hospitals like Massachusetts General are reporting record profits and enjoying rate increases tucked into the reform package. Blue Cross and other insurers that lobbied hard for the law stand to gain billions from the reform, which shrinks their contribution to the state’s free care pool and will force hundreds of thousands to purchase their defective products. Meanwhile, new rules for the free care pool will drastically cut funding for the hundreds of thousands who remain uninsured, and for the safety-net hospitals and clinics that care for them.

Read the whole piece here.

Apparently Hilary Clinton is calling for everybody to get insurance when she’s President. And the Mitten is bitching at her that she’s for socialized medicine.

Two stupids in a pod. Romney’s a Republican. He wants everyone to get sick or go broke paying insurance.

Hilary’s a Democrat. I don’t know what in hell she’s thinking, but if her plan includes the insurance companies, she should quit the race.

But all the pols, except Kucinich if I recall correctly, want you to give your money to insurance companies and don’t want to provide reasonable health care for everyone.

We can’t have a reasonable health care system in this country until we get the insurance terrorists… companies… out of the mix. They don’t give a damn about your health, never did, never will. They want your money, money for nothing, so they can drive around in BMW and Mercedes cars.

But as long as they’re allowed to continue buying politicians, you are screwed. Get seriously sick and your life is destroyed. You lose your health, your money, your house, your car, your dignity, all so insurance company executives and managers and salesmen can run around in fancy cars to expensive restaurants, using expense accounts that you paid for.

They’re thieves and they’ll kill you for your money. Literally kill you.

Obligatory Bush Post On ‘The Speech’. (Shucks, Do I Hafta?)
September 14, 2007

You can find all the analysis and parsing you could possibly dream of out there today, on the tube, in the papers, on the web.  The Lion can’t really add much to any of it, nor is he inclined to do so.

The Lion notes that George Bush is a sad, pathetic little man who should be taking antipsychotic medication in a locked room. Unfortunately, he has gained political power in this country and is propped up by a Republican party intent on putting party over country, party over the law, party over the Constitution. When one of their Presidential candidates, Governor Huckabee, praises the President and calls the disaster in Iraq a theological war, as he did after the speech last night, you know that the Republicans have gone around the bend into madness and intend to take us and the world with them.

Thousands of Americans and Iraqis will die in the next year for no other reason than to maintain George Bush in power and to allow the Republicans to pretend that they have anything meaningful to say or do.

While those of us on the side of light may criticize the Democrats for failing to stop the war, to stop the psychotic in the White House, we have to accept that they are almost as powerless as we are. The Republicans have and use their votes to keep the war going, to keep their insane little poppet propped up. And yes, the Democrats could do more, could swing harder, could hit harder, and I wish they would. But it’s the Republicans who are responsible, who keep the madness and chaos going, who keep the killing fields open, and who must be made to pay, the sooner the better.

This country will see neither peace nor sanity nor harmony, neither justice nor fairness nor equality until the Republican party lies shattered on the ashheap of American history.

And a special note for Republican John Boehner, of ‘small price’ fame – you are beneath contempt. If you had the slightest shred of decency and integrity you would resign from the Congress. But a person who is so contemptuous of democracy and law that he hands out lobbyist checks on the floor of the House of Representatives obviously not only has neither decency nor integrity, but does not even know the meaning of the words. Unfortunately, to hear a Republican demean and denigrate every soldier who has ever fought in this country’s wars, to spit on their families and their graves, is no longer a matter of outrage. It’s business as usual for the Republicans.

Congress Comes Back. Will Dems Fight Or Will They Count Votes?
September 4, 2007

There’s a couple of givens in Congress right now.

One is that the Republicans will continue to support whatever Bush wants. They’ve decided to put party over country, personality over reason, despite having a genuine nutcase in the White House. He’s their nutcase, so that makes it okay.

Second is that the Democrats do not have the votes to overcome Republican immorality and anti-Americanism. The Republicans will filibuster anything the Democrats propose that might end the insanity we’re committing in the Middle East or that might actually do something positive domestically. After all, it’s Republicans calling for an end to aid to New Orleans and hurling barely disguised racial slurs at the people of New Orleans.

So what will the Democrats do?

If they count votes and decide that if they can’t win a vote then there’s no point in pursuing the issue, then they’re dead meat.

Obviously they can’t overcome a filibuster.

Obviously they can’t overcome a veto.

And waiting for some Republicans to change sides is nothing if not defeatism. Democrats will be playing Didi and Gogo, but without hope as nothing but an illusion of Godot lies over the horizon.

Waiting for Republicans to do something good or right simply plays into their hands.

But to fold? That’s craven cowardice. That’s abandoning the country. That’s ceding the field to the enemy.

If the Democrats can’t vote down a filibuster, then let the Republicans filibuster. Let the onus be on the Republicans. Let the country see that it’s the Republicans keeping the war going, denying help to America and Americans, continuing insane policies here and abroad. But don’t let them get away with threatening a filibuster and then not forcing them to carry it out.

Same for a veto. So what if the Chief Nutso threatens a veto. Let him carry it out. Let everyone see that he’s responsible. Stop giving him a free ride.

Drag these people out into the light of day. Drag their irresponsible, destructive, mean-spirited views and actions out into the sun.

We don’t care if the Democrats don’t have to votes to carry the day. We know that already. But goddammit we expect the Democrats to fight. We expect them to kick and punch, we expect them to plant their foot hard in the crotch of the enemy, we expect them to keep kicking and punching. They don’t have to win in order to gain respect. But they have to fight, they have to get down in the gutter with the Republicans and slug it out, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year, until the Republicans are bloodied and beaten, and remain nothing but a foul stench of a memory in American politics.

The Republicans traffic in lies, in delusion, in bigotry, in hatred, in racism, in greed, in hypocrisy. If the Democrats refuse to attack them at the gut level of these practices, then there is no point in the Democrats bothering to show up.

But if they continue to fold and to compromise with political evil, then they’re done, we’re done, and the country is done.

Democrats Need A New Language
August 28, 2007

You know how the Dems are always saying stuff like “We’re going to fight for the working people”?

What they should be saying:

“We’re going to get the rich tax shirkers off the backs of the working people.”

“We’re going to bust the anti-unionists and give the working people back their right to organize.”

“We’re going to get the wealthy insurance companies out of the business of denying healthcare to working people.”

And then they had damn well better do it.

The Political Brain – A Must Read
August 27, 2007

I’m not going to write a genuine review of Drew Westen’s The Political Brain. But if you’re a Democrat or a Liberal or a Progressive or someone suffering from a related disease, you have got to read this book.

The subtitle is “The role of emotion in deciding the fate of the nation” and the guy lays out an absolutely convincing case about who wins elections and why, and shows how to win.

[From the cover blurb.] Westen is a clinical, personality, and political psychologist, and Professor in the Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory University, as well as the founder of Westen Strategies, a political and corporate consulting firm.

Disclaimer: I’m on page 145 of a book that’s over 450 pages. But the guy is just so spot on over and over again that I don’t hesitate to recommend the book.

What he says just feels absolutely right. Get it from the library. Hide in a corner of the bookstore and read. If nothing else, read starting at the bottom of page 129 the response he suggests Gore should have made to Bush in their first debate when Bush called Gore a liar. We’d be living in a different world if Gore had actually responded as Westen suggests.

Who’s Obstructing Legislation? Arrogant Republicans Of Course.
July 1, 2007

According to this piece at TPM, Senate Republicans have blocked 239 pieces of legislation passed by the House. These are the same arrogant, slimy fellows who complained every time the Democrats fought them while the Republicans had a 55 seat majority in the Senate.

Now they think it’s okay to do the very things they whined about. They’re proud of being obstructionists.

Here’s hoping for a 65 seat Democratic Senate majority in 2009 so that we can begin to undo the damage these cretins have done in concert with their sociopathic leaders in the White House.

Car Bombs In London! Wow! Who Woulda Thunk It?
June 30, 2007

Anyone who’s surprised by the car bombs found in London really needs to have their sense of reality examined by a competent professional.

Paisley Dodds of the Associated Press writes today:

Professor Paul Wilkinson, chairman of the Center for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence at St. Andrews University, said a number of factors would have come together to prompt the thwarted attacks.

“With the change in prime minister this could be the work of Al Qaeda,” he said. “They have a track record of trying to influence political change through violent means such as in the Madrid train attacks.”

A couple of notes on that. The change in Prime Ministers had already taken place. And these people were most likely not really al Qaeda. Hell, they couldn’t even put together a working car bomb. I doubt that al Qaeda training has fallen off that badly. We’ll probably find these were local wannabes who couldn’t figure out how to do a good bomb. Which is most fortunate.

Then there’s this:

US authorities said there was no specific terror threat to the United States, and the national alert level, currently at yellow (elevated) was not raised.

Well of course it wasn’t raised. There’s no election scheduled this time of year.

Next year, though, wow oh wow! If someone sets off a firecracker in August, the Republicans will put that terror color thingie right up through the frigging roof. They’ll be shouting “Nine eleven! Nine eleven! Vote Republican. Democrats are weak-kneed traitors! Nine eleven! Nine eleven!”

The pathetically funny thing is that al Qaeda, the real al Qaeda, would love to pull off a big one next year in order to keep the Republicans in office. Bin Laden & Company know that their best friend and biggest supporter is George W. Bush and his neocon sociopaths. He’s carried their water since 2001 and if another Republican gets into office, that one will carry their water too. Republicans are the best recruiters and trainers that al Qaeda has.
