3.64 Miles

Ozzy and I rode 3.64 miles today. I found a way through to the big field across the street. It wasn't much of a ride and we did a lot of back tracking and staring between trees, but it's a start. We saw white peacocks, old tractors, dead deer, big dogs, a trampoline, and as close to a wild horse as you'll see in these parts. Ozzy had a couple of tense moments, but was mostly good. It's supposed to start raining again tomorrow, which sucks because I'm itching to do some longer rides.

I also took a few minutes out today to take a picture of Ozzy's awesome custom saddle pad. I keep meaning to take pictures of it, but I either forget the pad or the camera or both. The pad is by Kate over at The Adventures of Lucy and the second I saw it, I knew I had to have it. LOVE IT. Everyone should buy one. Hehe.

Ozzy

Proof that I occasionally ride my horse.

Bike Stuff

-Went for a motorcycle ride with Mike and Dev on Saturday. We rode all the way up to the Chatterbox and had lunch before winding our way back home in time to go to work. I felt like I was never going to be warm again despite a 20 minute scalding hot shower.

-Mike and I spent yesterday window shopping for his next bike. I think I'm in love with Harley's Wide Glide and Mike was pretty much drooling on himself sitting on it. The jump from super moto to cruiser is a big one and we want to start going on longer trips next year. With prices and financing options and 'first real bike' status in mind, Mike is leaning more towards the Stryker, which we looked at over in the Yamaha dealership. I told him to hibernate on it. We'll see.

Blog Awards

I am so far behind!!! Agh!!!

I have been honored with not one, but two blog awards in the past two weeks and it's high time I pass them on! The first award came from several of you and I apologize for losing track:
So... 15 blogs and 7 things about me:

1. I love to eat cold Chinese food.
2. I am a die hard romantic.
3. When I get nervous, I tug on the back of my hair.
4. I dream VERY vivid dreams and used to track them in a dream log and interpret them with a dream dictionary. Sometimes I debate starting up a dream blog, but I barely have time for all the websites I already maintain.
5. I am extremely sappy and will cry over TV shows, commercials, and movies a LOT.
6. I have a big fear of spiders, but have been consciously working on it and have improved a lot this year. A giant wood spider fell off the log splitter while I was running it with Mike and I didn't even flinch!
7. I love blank notebooks and wish I had a reason to use them. The best part of the office end of my last job was the need for lots of lists... and therefore lots of notebooks.

The second award was presented to me by Stasha over at Horsez-R-Us.
This award is for three blogs who I not only follow the most, but find the most helpful and inspiring. (And it is SO HARD for me to pick just three.)

1. Now THAT's a Trot- This is cheating since Erin and I know each other in real life, but seriously... who else would ship my sorry butt all the way to Maine just for the adventure?
2. Haiku Farm- Aarene not only rides endurance... she does it on a standardbred!!! She gives great advice and is always supportive, whether I've completed a fifty on a new horse or failed to complete due to lameness. She's an inspiration and top of my list of people to meet.
3. Leaving a Giant Impression- And who can forget Eryn? She dropped everything for the weekend just to crew for me in Vermont when I got stuck for help two days before the ride. She schlepped water buckets and crammed snacks down my throat and even took a thousand photos to share with you guys when I got back.

Ozzy Ride

Ozzy held a grudge for quite a while after the hose incident. The next two times I went to see him, he wanted nothing to do with being caught or ridden. In the mean time, he was busy wreaking havoc on Carolyn's farm. She came out one day to find him in the indoor, throwing bales of hay around like toys.

Today, Ozzy was finally ready to get over himself. He greeted me in the field with a smile, and happily munched on the apple I brought him.

We went on to have a lovely half hour schooling ride in the outdoor. His canter has gotten really nice lately and all his old training seems to be coming back without a hitch.

I locked Herbie up, re-mounted, and took Ozzy off the farm for a two and a half mile jaunt, just to enjoy the nice weather. We explored the big  housing development across the street, but aside from an anxious border collie that wanted to follow us home, we didn't find anything particularly interesting.

Good horse... this time.

Hiking the Gorge

Mike called me early in the afternoon yesterday to declare that he didn't feel like working any more. Instead we grabbed the dog and went hiking at the gorge. His truck is so long that we had to park on an angle to keep from blocking the entire entrance to the park. It appeared to be opening day for fly fishing season and the river was teaming with fishermen. The colors are starting to turn on the trees and the weather was gorgeous. Herbie was on her best behavior and it looked to be a good day for hiking.

Then Herbie took a bad step and dunked her butt in the water. Mike, being the kind hearted guy that he is, stepped forward to help her scramble back onto dry land. Only, in the process, his foot slipped and he wound up knee deep in the frigid water himself.

"That's what you get for feeling sorry for the mutt," I laughed at him. "If you're going to do something dumb, you can get yourself out of your own mess."

Keep in mind this was about five minutes into our hike. He wrung out his sock and kept right on hiking for the next three hours. He's a trooper like that.

After we crossed the railroad bridge and hiked a ways down the trail, Mike pointed down through the trees into the ravine to our left. Across the way, we could see his truck parked under the trees.

"We should just go down the hill and across the river back to the truck," I joked.
"Want to?" I love that he's always up for an adventure.

And so we went slip sliding down the world's steepest hill down to the water's edge. The problem then became finding a way across the river. The water is waist high with a pretty strong current and it's too cold to be wading anywhere. We spent a long time exploring up and down the shore line, which is when it really sank in that I've raised a bad ass little dog. Herbie is a brave girl and will try anything you ask her to. The word 'quit' is not in her vocabulary.

Just when I was  starting to lose hope, we discovered a way to an island in the middle of  the river. From there, we were able to find a pile of logs that put us the rest of the way back to shore. I definitely thought I was going to fall in the river and drown, but we made it safely back to the truck, where the dog immediately passed out.

Christine and I did this sort of thing all the time growing up and it's nice to have a boyfriend who is willing to go adventuring with me. Squee.

On the Bike

In between haunts, Mike and I took advantage of a gorgeous autumn Saturday and took the bike out for a spin. His eyes lit up when I happily agreed to go for a road trip  to nowhere, to get lost in the beautiful places that New Jersey hides from the public so well.

We had lunch at the Oldwick General Store before heading out for sixty miles of back road. We wound around tight turns and slowed for scenic views at the tops of hills. We gawked at giant houses and laughed at street names. I kept my arms around his waist and my hands tucked in my sleeves as we encountered stone roads, babbling brooks, and properties that make the mind boggle.

He opened it up coming across the dam and we leaned into the turns together, the bike hugging the road as the wind churned the lake into whitecaps behind us. Somewhere between a stone bridge and an immaculately manicured horse farm, he squeezed my hand. When the views got particularly good, he shouted over the shake of the engine to make sure I didn't miss a thing.

My hair was a wind blown tangle by the time I pulled my helmet off, and I was swimming in the long sleeve shirts he lent me, but he just smiled big and leaned in close with a hand cupped under my chin.
"You're so beautiful," he whispered, and his eyes locked with mine for a moment before he closed them to kiss me.

I am loving fall this year.

General Life Updates

Life has been busy and good. My brain is generally scattered and I can't seem to  remember anything in any kind of particular order. Maybe I'l do bullets?

-As many of you saw, Mike and I are now Facebook official. :-P It's silly, but it makes me incredibly happy. I think I may finally have something normal (you know, disregarding that whole ex-fiance's best friend thing).

-He continues to treat me like gold. He cooks for me, snuggles me all night, and pays to fill my gas tank. He tells me I'm beautiful and isn't afraid to get goofy with me when I'm feeling wild. He is the world's best kisser (and, as a kissing slut, I would know). The way he kisses me goodbye in the morning and hello after a long day apart makes my stomach do back flips. We've been sucking face for five months and it never gets old.

-I've been trying to maintain some form of social life. Last week we had a bonfire at The Farm and Tor and I went on an impromptu paddle boating adventure on Schaefer's Skeezy Swamp of Slime (aka the pond). Yesterday Mike, Erin, and I took Herbie walking in Collier's Mills between rain showers. There have been dinners and lunches and ice cream trips. There is a long list of people I want to go visit once October is over.

-We stopped by at Jannine's last weekend because she was having a get together and I missed her. She made me  'pumpkin pie', which is Sam Adams Pumpkin Ale with a shot of vanilla vodka in it.  I managed to get drunk in the middle of the afternoon and Mike had to drive us to work. Don't worry, I sobered up before it was time for make up.

-Two nights ago we did dinner with Elisa, who I hadn't seen since her wedding a year and a half ago. She and her husband are moving to North Carolina next year and she wanted to break the news to us in person. The good news is that plane tickets down there are only like $80 and we were planning on vacationing down there next summer anyway. It was good to catch up on life and news. Elisa approved of Mike (everybody does) and the conversation was full of great quotes including, "We know. You're coming," and, "She's what you'd call a MILF now."

-I got unemployment so I was able to pay my rent and continue having a place to live. I look at my options sometimes because it would be good to have a back up plan, but I don't think I'm going anywhere any time soon. Last night I was reading back over the Juliette entry and remembering that it could be worse. (If you're really bored and want to email me for THOSE stories, feel free.)

-Bryce's new girlfriend is really cool. I'm sure it was pretty awkward for her to meet us the first time, but she seems to have settled right in. Bryce made the mistake of leaving her home alone with me while he ran out for creamer, and I immediately cleared the air. She and I have a lot in common and spent four and a half hours hanging out while he was at work the other day. She's in an accelerated nursing program and lives an hour away so we don't see much of  her, but I'm hoping that'll change once she graduates.

-The job search is... going. I have definitely gotten much pickier about what I am willing to do for a job. I'm still pretty open minded about what I  actually want to be DOING, but my list of criteria has gotten stricter. For example- I'm not looking to commute more than half an hour, I need fixed hours and weekends free, I want a salary and health insurance, and I'm really really not willing to do anything commission based. I have been following up on some leads that have been sent to me (and appreciate everyone on here who has thought of me and sent job postings). I sent my resume to a head hunter for a Princeton company. He's a friend of a friend and will hopefully be able to help me out. I also stopped at SRF to pee after hours yesterday and chatted with Jenn for a while. I let her know that I'm taking on horse training clients. We'll see if that goes anywhere.

-Since people are asking, Ozzy is doing well. I have honestly not been spending much time with him at all, but he's happy and sound and I'm waiting for the weather to clear so we can get some adventuring in before winter is upon us.

-The Haunted gig is also going well. I only got hit once on Sunday night and I've been having a laugh riot with some of the people I'm working with. My partner in crime and I have our part of the carnival down to an art and have been getting some really good scares. We had one little kid separated from his family and running in a panic back and forth up the hallway. Every time he'd hit a new clown, he'd turn around and run the other way. He must have been going for a good ten minutes. There was another little kid who I scared pretty badly. His mom LEFT HIM and kept going. Minutes later, his cries for help reached her and she went all Mama Bear on me, jumping on my back and pulling me off the kid. Listen here, Mother of the Year, you're the one who LEFT HIM IN THE DARK WITH A SCARY CLOWN. Sheesh! Weekends have definitely been exhausting, especially for Mike who has been doing landscaping during the week and has to physically chase people for hours every weekend night. We have been sleeping for half the weekends because we need it. He could barely walk by the time Monday rolled around.

-The other night, on our way home from Haunted, Mike suddenly stopped the truck and asked, "Did I just see what I think I saw?" He turned his high beams on and backed up the road, revealing a cow plastered against the fence closest to the street. He rolled his window down and mooed a moo that would have had me mooing back if I was a cow. When I asked if we could pet the cows, Mike didn't even bat an eye before throwing the car in park and hopping out into the chilly October night. And so we found ourselves sitting in the grass outside a cow pasture in the dead of night with his truck in the middle of a back road and a lone curious sheep staring at us from behind his herd of cattle. Now I laugh every time I drive down that road.

I think that's the gist of if. If you have any questions or feel like you missed something, feel free to let me know.

Tough Crowd

Last night at Haunted was rough.

Mike and I got there super early and hung out at the main actors' trailer for a while. Shortly after that, we went our separate ways. Mike walked me over to the haunted house and I got into costume and make up. If anything, my make up was even better this week.

The crowd last night was a tough one. I knew I was doing a good job scaring people because I got punched in the face four times, clawed with big, fake nails once, and stampeded nearly off my feet another time.

One of the hits came from a guy. He felt bad immediately (I think it was a reflex).
"Dude, I'm sorry!"
"Dude, I'm not a dude." *whimper*

At one point, I wasn't sure if the blood coming out of my nose was real or fake. Haha.

We had the strobe hallway down to an art. One of the guys from the corn maze got reassigned to the carnival and was partnered up with me for the night. His mask and costume were EXTREMELY creepy and he made for a great decoy. While people were busy looking at him, I'd pop around the corner and get right in their faces before they could see me, using the strobe light effect to really blow their minds. I was even able to get some people a second time by sneaking around the coffins and surprising them while the doll clown stalked and harassed them.

Over the course of the night we had five people crying hysterically. One girl was on the floor in fetal position while her friend held her and begged us to stop. We continued to loom and leer. Two kids fell and were climbing over each other to get away and I chased one girl clear through the next part of the carnival.

And to whoever it was that came through and recognized me... HI!!! and thanks for coming out. I didn't get a chance to see who you were. LOL.

Sunset at Round Valley

Yesterday was the epitome of a gorgeous fall day. The sun was out, the air was crisp, and the breeze knocked leaves from trees that haven't quite committed to changing colors yet. When Mike asked what I wanted to do, my only request was 'something outside'. So we picked up Chinese food to go and bumped and rattled down the gravel road to the back side of Round Valley. I'm growing rather fond of the bench seat in the big truck because it means I can slide over and wiggle under Mike's arm while he drives. Herbie was beyond delighted when we parked the truck and let her out, and we just couldn't go fast enough for her. She led the way down to Mike's beach, where the water was higher than I've seen it all year. While Herbie ran and splashed and ran some more, Mike and I had dinner, then huddled close to watch the sun go down. We made our way back to the truck by flashlight, fingers interlocked and jackets layered against the cold. It's something I could do every night.

I cannot believe how grown up my dog has gotten. She'll be a year old next month.

Opening Night

Our friend Andrew's family owns a farm and farm stand in Hunterdon county. I've been spending a lot of time there this year, going all the way back to the bonfire in the spring that had my stomach all in knots about Mike in the first place.

Mike has been working the Schaeffer Farms Fright Fest haunted hay ride for as long as I've known him. Last year I went to check it out and had a great time. Mike's role is to chase people through the corn maze with a chain saw and he even scared some girls into giving us discounted tickets in the parking lot. This year, I desperately need money so when Andrew offered to let me work Haunted, I jumped right on board.

Last night was opening night. I drove over to Mike's when he was done landscaping and we grabbed a bite to eat before making our way over to The Farm. We pulled in around 4:30 and set to work doing things like towing the Raptor out of a ditch in the woods and setting up a tent at the 'haunted campsite'. I still had no idea what I was doing as far as my role in the festivities, but R assured us I'd be made useful.

As it turns out, she stuck me in the Carnival of Chaos, the haunted house after the corn maze, and the very last thing people see before they go home. I remember it from last year and it was some pretty trippy stuff.

Once the actors arrived, C started getting us in make up. Her 12(?) year old daughter was really excited to do someone's face. Apparently she's really good at doing blood and gore and has been dying (heh heh) to try her skills on someone's face. I went in with an attitude of "I'll do whatever you guys want" and happily volunteered to be her guinea pig. Let's just say the kid is good!! Combined with my maniacal laugh and tendency to sing children's tunes in an eerie voice, I made for an awesomely scary clown.

My make up was so good that Mike didn't even recognize me when he came looking for me. He walked in, looked around, looked right at me, and called me to find out where I was. I got a pretty good laugh out of that.

Juice (who plays a creepily accurate Beetlejuice) was delighted with my costume and my attitude. He also totally had my back all night.

Opening night was generally slow. There were only three or four wagons so there was a lot of waiting and practicing. I got the Lollipop Song and Ring Around the Rosie down to an art. I was in the strobe light room, coming down a long hallway at people. The best part is there was another clown scaring them at the start of the hall so they'd be busy looking at him and wouldn't see me until I was right in their faces. Mwahaha!

I got some pretty good scares out of the crowd. I had a group of high school boys screaming like school girls and I almost felt bad about the little kids I was swooping down, but my favorite had to be the big black man who threw his girlfriend at me to get away.

The other clowns were great too. Two young girls were so good they gave ME nightmares.

"Don't go in the closet, don't go under the bed, if you do I promise you, you will soon be DEAD!"

The night went quickly and it wasn't long before we were back in the trailer. Mike came down to get me and winced as I pulled layers of latex off my face. He'd had much success in the corn maze, causing several people to fall on their faces in the mud.

We did a late night Taco Bell run and sat in his dad's truck stuffing our faces before running home, where we helped each other scrub make up off. I was exhausted by the time we fell into bed, but I can't wait to do it again tonight. It's going to be a fun month.
