Bears, big cats, and others in these tourist traps face many hardships: They\u2019re often denied proper veterinary care, clean and safe enclosures, and even adequate shelter from the wind and extreme temperatures. Some roadside zoos confine bears to cruel, antiquated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blue-sea-697d.quartiers047.workers.dev:443\/https\/www.peta.org\/blog\/photos-show-long-sad-history-bear-pits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>concrete pits<\/strong><\/a>, where they have virtually nothing to do but beg for scraps of food from tourists. So-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/blue-sea-697d.quartiers047.workers.dev:443\/https\/headlines.peta.org\/seaquest-aquariums\/\"><strong>interactive aquariums<\/strong><\/a>\u201d found in shopping malls see animal deaths, legal violations, injuries to the public, and evidence of serious animal neglect. Dozens and dozens of roadside zoos <a href=\"https:\/\/blue-sea-697d.quartiers047.workers.dev:443\/https\/www.peta.org\/issues\/animals-in-entertainment\/zoos-pseudo-sanctuaries\/factsheets-zoo-exhibitors\/\"><strong>exist across the United States<\/strong><\/a>, and you may even be familiar with some of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"The Miserable Lives of Animals Trapped in Barren Cages, Pens, and Tanks\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" class=\"C0003 optanon-category-C0003\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blue-sea-697d.quartiers047.workers.dev:443\/https\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/f1PiQceZWvc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overseas, where regulations protecting captive animals are sometimes even more lax (or completely nonexistent), things are similarly grim. PETA Asia and other animal rights organizations have documented elephants, primates, big cats, and other animals being held in shopping malls, high-rise buildings, and roadside tourist traps. These animals rarely, if ever, have access to natural sunlight, appropriate enrichment, or even safe enclosures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All wild animals in roadside zoos &#8211; whether they are in the United States or abroad &#8211; lack the space they need to thrive. They will never contribute to the success of their species in the wild, and these for-profit companies make no efforts to help animals in the wild. Sadly, these outfits are nothing more than breeders, dealers, and exhibitors exploiting the public&#8217;s goodwill and generosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fundamental purpose of any <em>legitimate<\/em> animal sanctuary is to provide animals with safe, comfortable living conditions that give them as natural an existence as captivity allows.
