This is the message that I gave at Walker Valley UMC for the 12th Sunday after Pentecost (26 August 2001).  The Scriptures for this Sunday were Jeremiah 1: 4 – 10, Hebrews 12: 18 – 29, and Luke 13: 10 – 17.

Over the past few weeks I have had the opportunity to think about my family. Not just my mother, brothers, sister and my family here in New York but rather my extended family of Schüessler cousins. Besides the thirteen or so ministers that are an integral part of the history of the family, we have a number of actors, musicians, and artists; enough so that I have thought we could form our own production company. Following the 1998 reunion, I began to think of how easy it might be to make a commercial of some sort, seeing how it was that we had all that available talent.

I thought it might be nice to make a commercial about coming to church especially the country church in Neon where I served in a similar capacity to what I do here in Walker Valley. Recently the announcement that the United Methodist Church was itself going to run a series of television commercials aimed at the 25 – 29 age group, the one group of people that seems so conspicuously absent from church membership today. I have no idea what these ads are going to be like; all that I have received is that there are going to be a number of them.

But I have to wonder if they are going to be some slick commercial designed to meet some marketing scheme. Or rather, are they going to be genuine attempts to get this age group to come back to church, be it the church they grew up in or some other church close by. It may be the latter but I have also found out that we may not get the opportunity to find out. Apparently only CBS will be carrying these ads in any of their prime time programming. NBC, ABC and FOX have all stated that it is against their policy to run religious advertisements on the air.

This is a time when many people see the world around them and look to find some meaning in the world. How else can you explain the proliferation of ads for psychic hotlines? In a desire for peace and security infomercials, someone’s wonderful invention of the thirty-minute commercial, about how to make money without breaking a sweat dominates the airways. And these commercials are often followed by other commercials extolling the virtues of some wonderful exercise machine designed to make it easy for you to stay in shape. Never mind that you will be told by the next exercise advertisement that this method doesn’t work and that you need to use the other method.

My point is this. We are at a point where people are seeking security. The problem is that many times they see security in terms of financial well being or stability in their lives. But sooner or later, they find that these do not provide the security and comfort that they seek. And they begin to look for the answers to their questions of why and why me.

The sad thing to say is that American churches are always there when some one needs to here the answer and many more times than not, American churches are the reason why people seek answers in other things. As you look at the commercials that dominate the airways, notice how many religious broadcasts are on the air (though maybe not on the major networks). Notice how these broadcasts all seem to be a reflection of the Old Testament version of God, of thunder and lightning, of fire and brimstone.

Verses 18 through 21 of the reading from Hebrews today remind us of Israel at Mount Sinai hearing Yahweh thundering out his commands. It was a setting that evoked a paralyzing fear of God in the people. They wanted no communication with from God of that mountain and they also realized that they could bear the demanding standards of holiness.

This picture of worship lacks a relationship between creation and the Creator. The fear of people results from a lack of knowledge about the God of the mountain. We cannot know someone with whom we have no relationship.

The Pharisees and Sadducees of Christ’s time helped to accentuate this picture of humanity’s relationship with God. While the Pharisees and Sadducees taught and expected a devotion to legalistic and unbearable regulations, Jesus taught the disciples to pray openly, addressing God as "Father."

The incident reported in the Gospel reading from Luke today points that out. The synagogue official didn’t feel that it was right for Jesus to perform a healing miracle on the Sabbath. As the official said in Luke 13: 14, "There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured." (Luke 13: 14)  The main concern for this ruler was not the healing of the individual but rather the maintenance of the rules. Jesus was more interested in healing the woman and restoring her relationship with God than He was in the order of how things were done.

The tearing of the veil in the Temple during the crucifixion was a vivid symbol of the open access to the Father, which Christ procured for humanity. Christ restored the relationship between the people and God.

I also feel that many churches in this country today do not present a message of compassion and love, the very essence of Christ’s message on earth. There is a lot of things wrong with this world but the church should be a unifying force, not one of the reasons for its division. Too many churches today preach a message of exclusion, not inclusion. And too many churches today do little to offer hope for anyone seeking to find shelter from the problems of today’ world.

If I were making a commercial today, I would say to those that listen that this was a place where they could feel safe. They may not find the answers to the problems that are plaguing them, they might not be able to resolve all the financial problems or medical problems that they have to fight. But they will find peace and comfort. They will have the opportunity to reestablish their relationship with God.; to be reminded as Jeremiah was, that God has always known who they were and how special they are to Him. As it said in the reading from Hebrews, they will get a chance to hear from God. This can come from either worship or it can come from quietly sitting in the sanctuary. The opportunity to do so is what we give them.

But until I get the family production group up and running and figure out how to get them all here to Walker Valley, I need to think about another type of commercial. And that is the commercial we produce every day of our lives. Each day that we go about our business is our chance to witness for Christ. I don’t mean to browbeat someone over the head with scripture but rather through our own unconscious actions show people what Christ’s love and sacrifice means for us.

Some might think this is the most difficult task every asked of them. Jeremiah said as much when God called him to be a prophet among his people. But again, think about what God told Jeremiah, just as He told all the prophets before and after him, "I will give you the strength and the ability necessary to meet the task at hand."

In all that you do, God will provide you with the strength and the ability to meet the tasks that you have to do. The hardest task may be simply to walk through life showing the spirit of Christ in your life. But it is the easiest way you can show someone that God is a God of love and that a relationship with Him is possible.

As this day ends and the new workweek begins, I want you to think about ways that you can serve, think about ways that you can quietly produce your own commercial about how Christ is a part of your life. Perhaps you will find the answer to serve some part of this church. Perhaps it will be to say something quiet and peaceful as way to offer strength and hope to someone else this week. I know that is scary thinking that some time this week you will be called to do something in Christ’s name but remember that the promise of God is that he will be with you in whatever you do and that whatever you do will be a success.


Saints and sinners


Now, I know just enough to know that Dwight L. Moody was a fantastic preacher and perhaps I would have like to hear him preach.  A colleague/friend just sent me this note about one sermon he preached.

Dwight L. Moody once preached in a church where people were known to get up and walk out during the sermon.  Moody began his sermon by saying, "I’m going to speak to two classes of people this morning:  First to the sinners and then to the saints."  He preached for a short while and then announced that he was finished addressing the sinners.  They were free to leave.  He was ready to talk to the saints.  Not a soul got up and left until the conclusion of the sermon.

And What Will You Say?


Here are my thoughts for the 12th Sunday after Pentecost.  I am preaching at Stevens Memorial United Methodist Church (South Salem, NY).

The weather last week and the news in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and in the Newburgh Times Herald-Record about lightning striking church steeples in the respective towns of St. Louis, MO and Newburgh, NY prompted me to look for other similar incidents. Doing a search on the Internet, I discovered close to 100,000 occasions when “lightning strikes a church steeple.”

If occurrences of natural disasters are a sign of God’s wrath, how are we to interpret these instances? Are the people of the churches that were involved doing something sinful? Or is it likely that church steeples are a likely target for lightning because they are often times the highest point in an area and thus easily the “targets” for God’s fireworks?

Jesus said we see the signs of weather but we do not know what they mean. I can understand that. Some saw the floods that covered most of the Midwest in 1993 and said it was God’s punishment for the people’s behavior. Some saw Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the devastation that wrecked New Orleans and the Gulf Coast and said it was God’s punishment for the people of New Orleans’ behavior and lifestyle. The tsunami that ravaged the Indian Ocean two years ago was because God was angry with the people of that region. Even the collapsed bridge in Minnesota was said to have been for the extreme behavior of the people of Minnesota.

I cannot speak to God’s wrath and what causes it. When we hear of floods destroying the Midwest and have some preacher say it is God’s wrath, I am reminded that God promised us, with the sign of the rainbow, that he would never again destroy the earth through floods (Genesis 9: 8 – 11). And while the people of New Orleans and the surrounding Gulf Coast may lead lifestyles that are not Christian in nature and they may do things that we personally do not like (one person in Alabama even argued that hurricane Katrina’s real target were the casinos on the Mississippi Gulf coast), the destruction of New Orleans was more a sign of how poorly we maintain the levies along the Mississippi River and the destruction of the wetlands south of New Orleans. The fact that we are still discussing New Orleans and Katrina some two years after it happened is a sign of how little we may care for people less fortunate than us. The collapse of the bridge in Minnesota is again another sign of how we take care of our public infrastructure. If Minnesotans are so sinful that their bridges collapse, how are we to read the sign of the steam pipe exploding in New York? Are New Yorkers not sinful enough to warrant God’s wrath?

To say that such acts of nature are a sign of God’s wrath is to show a lack of understanding of the natural world as well as a lack of understanding of our relationship with God. Treating acts of nature as acts of God is to put God on the same level as the gods of ancient Egypt, Greece, or Rome.

If we see the signs around us as a portent of things to come, then we also do not understand what a prophecy is or what a prophet does. A prophet (from the Greek word for “speaker”) does not necessarily predict the future bur rather speaks out on behalf of God. A prophet does not foretell the future but tells forth. This can mean that they will foretell what the future will be but the primary and distinguishing characteristic of a biblical prophet is to be sought in the divine vocation and mission of telling and speaking in the name and by the designated authority.(Adapted from “Whose Bible Is It?” by Jaroslav Pelikan )

I do not perceive myself as a prophet by any stretch of the imagination but I do see the need to speak out (https://heartontheleft.wordpress.com/2007/01/14/no-i-cant-and-neither-should-you/). In a world that literally cries out for care and compassion, in a world where violence is almost too commonplace, there is a need for the Gospel message. Yet, today the church seems totally oblivious to the world around it. It seems to be that the church today has turned a blind eye to where it should be and where it is at.

I see churches where pastors, ministers, and leaders call for war and proclaim that the one true God is the God that we worship; anyone who worships the same God but in another religion worships a false God. But I also see churches and pastors who preach against war and call for peace.

When I wrote “Study War No More” and “Perhaps We Should Study War More Often”, I received a number of comments in support of war and arguing that war was inevitable. I found it amazing that these comments came from clergy in the United Methodist church rather than from the laity of the church. When I wrote about the killings at Virginia Teach (“It Happened Again”), it was a minister who argued that if one student had carried a gun the killings would have not happened. How is it that we can say that we work for the Prince of Peace but then say that war and violence are the solutions to war and violence? This is quite a change from the Methodists of this country in the 1700’s who were very much pacifists and opposed to war. Those who opposed the war were treated as loyalists and supporters of the crown, even if they were in support of the concept of the American Revolution.

I see and hear preachers today who claim that our founding fathers were devout Christians and who used their beliefs in God and Christ to write the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Yet, these same preachers forget that many of those they lift up were in fact deists, believers in an omnipotent God but not necessarily Christian. They revise history to suit their needs just as they have tried to revise science in order to quell questions that would undermine their own power and authority.

I see and hear preachers and churches that proclaim the gospel of riches and ignore the poor, claiming that the poor are sinful and responsible for their lot in life. But there are other preachers and churches who work to end poverty in this country; who see to it that the hungry are fed and work to build homes for the homeless when others turn their back on their plight.

We see the violence in the world; yet all we do is continue the violence. We see the hungry starving, even in our own country; yet our concern is limited to the compassion we feel for these poor souls. The poor keep getting poorer while the rich keep getting richer. Instead of making sure that everyone has the means for success, we encourage the hoarding of wealth. How big is the gap between the pay of a CEO in even the smallest companies in this country and the salaries and wages of the workers who work for that company? We see the quality of health care in this country more related to the amount of money in one’s bank account than to the skills and capabilities of the doctors, nurses, and technicians.

Yes, our own John Wesley encouraged us to earn all that we could; he was one of the highest paid ministers of his time. But he also encouraged us to save as much as we could and to give as much as we could. Even though John Wesley earned as much as 1400 pounds a year (a rather nice sum in those days), he had determined that he and his family could live on 28 pounds a year; the other money was given back to the church and to the poor. John Wesley sought to embody the words of Christ in his faith and his actions. How many pastors today, with their multi-million dollar book deals and salaries, with their expensive houses and private airplanes, can say the same thing? How long will it be before we realize that what we do to the least of our society is what we do to Christ?

I see and hear people in this country calling for a religious government, one that would emulate God’s Kingdom here on earth. Never mind that Christ never called for such a Kingdom but constantly urged us to prepare for the Kingdom in Heaven. I see and hear people who want nuclear war in the Middle East because it will start Armageddon and they will get to heaven. Never mind that the judgment as to who gets into heaven is made there and not here; that those who seek war and ignore peace, those who argue against helping the poor, the sick , and the needy will be the ones left out. I see and hear people in this country who put the country before God and claim that God will do the will of the people. Are we not supposed to do God’s will?

I see a parallel between what is happening in this country today and what happened in Germany in the 1930’s. When Adolph Hitler came to power, one of the groups that supported him was the Lutheran Church in Germany. For many in the church, his nationalistic rhetoric overshadowed his racism and bigotry.

It is hard to think that so many people died because the church turned a blind eye to the plight of the people. John Conway wrote,

It was the tragedy of the German churches that they were so inadequately prepared to oppose such strident heresies. They lacked safety valves against the challenge of the ‘radical right’ that offered a vision of church and state working hand in hand to renew the nation’s strength. The more perceptive churchmen realized too late the dangers of Nazi ambitions. The heresy of a nationalist pseudo-religion had gained too many adherents for effective defenses to be built or successful alternatives to be preached. Cut off from potential allies in the ecumenical movement abroad, only a handful of staunchly orthodox members of the Protestant Confessing Church were ready to take up arms to uphold Christian truths and to suffer for their faith. The lessons to be drawn from the churches’ behavior before and after the rise of National Socialism remain (http://www.bonhoeffer.com/bak2.htm ).

I cringe at the thought that was written about Germany in the 1930’s is again happening in this country at this time. How long shall Christians allow people to kill other people in the name of their country because they believe it is the correct action? We walk a fine line indeed when we say that our actions are acceptable because they are in the best interests of the country but which go against the moral teachings we supposedly learned in Sunday School and church. These are days which challenge the very soul of the church; these are days which cry out for each church to speak out and think of their responsibilities to mankind, no matter how they pray to God.

I see divisions in the church today. These divisions exist in local churches, denominations, and the church in general. And Jesus said that He had come not to bring peace, but division. Brother will turn against brother, parent against child, friend against friend (Luke 12: 49 – 56 ). This is a rather brutal statement from our Lord, especially in light of what He consistently said and did. But when you consider what He said and did, then it is easy to see how families can be divided, children will turn against their parents, and friends will split with friends. The message that Christ brought was a message that ran counter to the thoughts and actions of much of society. Those who followed Him would find themselves at odds with many people in society.

We see the signs but do we understand what they mean. How long will it take before we realize that some have too much money and many do not have enough? How long will it take before we realize that the continued oppression of a minority in any country can only incur hatred and violent rage? How long will it take before we realize that ignorance of the basic tenets of the Gospel will only yield terrorism, hatred, and continued violence?

So what are we to do in this time of struggle and strife? Are we to stand idly by and let the world self-destruct? Or are we to act so that the destruction of the world is a mute point?

Not all of the Lutheran ministers in Germany during the 1930’s went along with their church. There were many who openly opposed the transformation of the Lutheran Church into the spiritual advisor of the Nazi regime.

There were people like Paul Schneider and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Reverend Schneider was a Lutheran minister who consistently and openly spoke out against the Nazi regime and its attempt to subvert the Lutheran church. He was imprisoned in Buchenwald and died from a lethal injection in 1939 (This was adapted from comments about Paul Schneider in Servants, Misfits, and Martyrs by James C. Howell ).

I also wonder what Dietrich Bonhoeffer might say to the churches of today who ignore the poor and whose leaders tow the party line. What would either of these two say to those whose view of the future does not keep the Cross in plain sight?

I first encountered Dietrich Bonhoeffer when I was in college. His name kept coming up in situations related to the anti-war movement of the sixties. But I didn’t know who he was or why his thoughts were so important to that moment in time.

When he was in his mid-twenties, Dietrich Bonhoeffer was recognized as one of the brightest theological minds of all times. Yet, with his great understanding of the Bible and theology, he wrestled with the idea of what being a Christian was all about. In part, this dissonance between his mental life and his daily life came because of what was happening in Germany at that time, the early 1930’s. He saw a church where many leaders welcomed with open arms Adolf Hitler and many others simply acquiesced to the rise of Nazism, hoping that it would all go away.

Bonhoeffer was living in America and could have stayed here, safe from the troubles in Germany. But God called him to go home. In Germany, he worked to overthrow the Third Reich and help smuggle Jews out of Germany. He was arrested and imprisoned for two years. He was executed for his part in the attempted assassination of Hitler four days before Allied troops liberated the prison camp where he was imprisoned.

During those two years he thought and wrote about faith, God, life, and the church. He already knew that grace without discipleship was meaningless. In prison, I think that he began to see why. He wrote of missing worship services though he could not explain why. He wrote of a deeper sense of God’s involvement in our lives. He began to see how we are able to bring good out of evil, much in the manner that Joseph saw through the injustices of his brothers and the plans of a vindictive and rejected wife to the uniqueness of God’s own plan (This was adapted from comments about Dietrich Bonhoeffer in Servants, Misfits, and Martyrs by James C. Howell ).

Most importantly, Bonhoeffer saw that crisis becomes that edge where change is possible. But such change requires something greater than human nature. That something is our faith in God.

Isaiah speaks of the vineyard and the walls that surrounded it (Isaiah 5: 1- 7). Isaiah is speaking out against the people of Judah because of their lack of faith. The vineyard that he speaks of in today’s Old Testament reading is the people and God’s is the vineyard owner. The wild grapes that overgrow the cultured grapes are the product of the people’s sins. This are just sins of the lifestyle but also sins of greed, arrogance, and self-centeredness. The people of Judah had destroyed their own lives with their own self-centeredness. Their own self-centeredness overcame their faith.

If we are not willing to speak out against violence in all forms, when will violence end? If we are not willing to call for positive ways of resolving the violence, both domestic and foreign, that exists in this world today, how can we ever expect violence to end?

I will reiterate what I have said in the past and which no one else, that I am aware of, has said. If we do nothing to eliminate the causes of terror; if we do not work to eliminate world-wide hunger, world-wide poverty, and world-wide oppression, then terrorism will always be a part of our lives and we can expect violence to continue. If we respond to violence with violence with violence, how can we ever expect to achieve peace?

We must seek another way, a way that reflects who we are and what we believe. What would have happened if the German pastors, instead of supporting the Nazis, had spoken out against the wrongs that the Nazi government was doing in the 1930’s. Would we have had World War II if these men of God had spoken out against war, violence, and evil then? Unfortunately, these men of God were more interested in their own well-being and establishing that they were just as nationalistic as everyone else in Germany.

We are not asked to be martyrs to the faith; rather we are asked to be representatives of the faith. We are asked to go to Biloxi or Red Bird or Bolivia. We are asked to aid when disaster calls. We asked to invite our friends and neighbors to be here with us on Sunday morning. We are simply asked to show the presence of Christ in this world.

Yes, what we are often asked to do is very difficult. It is so much easier to walk by a homeless person than offer help. It is much easier to say that someone’s plight of homelessness or poverty is because they are sinful in nature. It is much easier to go to war than to work for peace. It is much easier to turn a blind eye to oppression than it is to speak out.

It is not an easy task; ask the writer of Hebrews (Hebrews 11: 29 – 12: 2). The writer lists what many of the early members of the church endured to insure that safety and the future of the church. The road, the path that they walked was clearly not an easy one. Yes, there are those who died in battle or led the nation in times of conflict but there were conflicts imposed upon them, not incited by them. We have those who went before us, that great cloud of faith to remind us that we are asked to do much for God and to do it with only the hope of a reward later. That is what our faith gives us in these times.

I do not have the answers. I am still struggling with the questions myself. But I know that I must speak out. I can no longer simply stand by and let others destroy the work of those who came before us. I will seek to do what God asks me to do; I will say “here I am” when God asks who will serve Him.

Each day we are asked one of two questions:

“Will you follow Jesus, no matter where it leads you in life?”

“And when you follow Jesus, will you carry out the tasks of the Gospel?”

What will you say when God asks you?

The Answer to the Question


I am at the Van Cortlandtville Community Church in Cortlandt Manor, NY this Sunday (location of church).  The Scriptures for this Sunday, the 11th Sunday after Pentecost (8 August 2010), are Isaiah 1: 1, 10 – 20; Hebrews 11: 1 – 3, 8 – 16; and Luke 12: 32 – 40.  The service is at 10:30 and you are welcome to attend.

Belief in Christ is, I believe is a private moment with a public sharing. How we come to believe in Christ is very much an individual and private occurrence. Our purpose this morning is to share in those moments and the commonality of that moment. Yet, whether we care to admit it or not, there are other moments, unique to each one of us, that we share with others.

At some point in our lives, there has been a moment when we have doubted our faith, questioned our religious beliefs, and wondered perhaps if we have not made a mistake in choosing the path that we would walk through life. And while such questions are private, for no one wants to admit that they have doubts about the church in today’s society, it is how we seek the answers that determine the path that we will walk through life.

I have known some who are unable to articulate the questions that cause them so much pain and doubt and cannot find the answers; they lead lives that one would characterize as lost in the wilderness. Others I know have answers to their questions which have led them to lives in faith outside the one in which they were born and raised. Still others struggle to find the answers in this world and are convinced that such answers can be found in a strictly constructed world. They invite others with similar struggles into their world but often dictate the outcomes of such lives.

I know that when I was either a junior or senior in high school (around 1967) I began to question my faith and my beliefs. I began, mostly out of curiosity, to explore other paths. But it was a time when the struggle for civil rights was on-going and not simply words in a history book; it was a time when the Viet Nam war was becoming more and more a part of our daily life. And it was a time when the message in the pulpit and the lessons taught in Sunday school were often in stark contrast to what was transpiring across this nation and around the world.

And as I was pushed academically and intellectually I also found myself internally questioning my denominational beliefs, my religious choices, and perhaps the very core values of my faith. How could a country which so loudly and proudly proclaimed that all men were equal say that such equality was based on one’s race, gender, and economic status? How could a country which proclaimed that it was the land of opportunity and plenty say that the opportunity was limited to a select few and that though there was plenty for all, people lived in hunger every day?

And how could we sing in Sunday school and church that Jesus loved the little children of the world no matter what color they were and stay silent when others to set dogs on children and blow up churches? And how could pastors preach a message that bordered on hate when Jesus welcomed everyone?

It would take me a few years to find the answers to my questions and perhaps I am still seeking the answers. I was lucky; I found some pastors and other individuals who offered help and showed me where the answers could be found. But I know many who, forty years ago, asked the same questions that I did and walked away from the church. Some did not have the support that I had; others found individuals willing to help but who could not or would not help them find the answers.

And as I look around today, I see many of the same questions being asked by another generation. It strikes me as ironic that even some forty years after I struggled with such questions, today’s generation struggles as well. It is almost as if this struggle to identify who we are is a necessary part of finding one’s faith in a complex and complicated world.

But this generation of seekers is faced with an even greater task. First, the number of individuals, whose journeys may mirror the journeys of the seekers, are fewer in number than years past. Second, for whatever reason, the desire to seek new knowledge, to ask questions and wonder about things unseen and unknown doesn’t seem to be there. We have created a world where information is gathered instantaneously but we have no tools for understanding what the information means. Many individuals have decided to let others determine what the information should be known, what the information means and what to do with it.

And if you should decide that perhaps you want to do that yourself, you are quickly labeled as an outsider, a radical, or a malcontent. In this world, one who questions faith is quickly called a heretic and just as quickly cast out of the church. If your decisions about faith do not match the prevailing theory you are ridiculed and dismissed as a non-believer.

But what is faith? Does faith truly move mountains and cause the ground to shake and the sky to rumble and flash? Or is it a quiet moment in one’s life that alters and changes the path they will take?

For the writer of Hebrews, faith is something that does happen but often times in ways that the world around us does not see. The writer of Hebrews tells us that “faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” This author writes of those who, like Abraham, made a quiet decision to do something even when the outcome of their decision was unknown or seemingly impossible to attain. The faith that is in the Bible is in this world but not of this world.

The world expects decisions of faith to be rash, bold and heroic; that somehow change the world and everything in the world from that moment on. In a world of the sound-bite and fast food, faith is supposed to have an immediate outcome.

But faith is the vehicle that accompanies the struggle for justice; it was the faith of those who marched for civil rights that enabled the victory to take place, even when the marchers were beaten and sometimes killed. Faith is that vehicle that allows one to deal with a chronic or long-term illness, to fight the pain because they have been given the reassurance of ultimate peace, no matter if it is in this world or the next. And while others around them may say that such pain comes because of something they have done, their faith reminds them that such suffering is not a punishment for something they did long ago.

It is this quiet, unyielding faith that changes lives in ways no one can foresee. Dr. Francis Collins, present head of the National Institutes of Health, can tell you about that faith for he saw it countless times as a third-year medical student. He will also tell you that he did not understand what he was seeing.

As he describes in The Language of God, he was the son of free-thinkers. And as he grew up in this environment and later went to school, he found no need for any sort of higher being in his life. But during that third year of medical school, he could only begin to question that part of his life.

Faith was not the psychological crutch that others today claim it to be. If it were a crutch, it was a powerful one. Nor could faith simply be the veneer of some cultural tradition because if it were, why were these individuals not shaking their fists at God and demanding that their friends and family stop talking about a loving and benevolent supernatural power?

The singular moment in Dr. Collins’ life came when an older woman, suffering daily from severe untreatable angina, asked if he believed in Christ. She had shared with him her beliefs and now she was asking if he believed. And all he could say was that he wasn’t sure. As he describes it, he came away from that moment completely terrified. How could he justify all that he had done before; would he now have to take responsibility for actions that he would have preferred to keep unscrutinized; was he now answerable to someone other than himself? Faith is something that is lived by people, often times “foreigners and strangers” to their own people, people who don’t fit into the prevailing cultural groove, people who are on an entirely different journey. And our society and our culture have become quite effective at making people an insider or an outsider, rewarding those who fit their standards and ignoring or shunning those who don’t.

It is really interesting to read what Dr. Collins writes about his journey in faith. For when it was announced that he was to be the head of the NIH, those on the left of the spiritual spectrum wondered if it was possible for someone who openly professed to being a Christian to direct such a major scientific organization such as the NIH. And those on the right of the spiritual spectrum wondered about the validity of his faith because of his education (he is an M. D. and also holds a Ph. D.)

But the witness of the Bible is that God calls those who society casts as an outsider as one of His own and makes them the ultimate insider. God is not playing society’s game against itself; in fact, God is refusing to play that game.

The game is not to have the right worship service with the right music at the right time. It is not about the clothes that one wears to church, nor is it about the place where the service is held. It is about the attitude that one brings to the church service. What was God saying through Isaiah in the Old Testament reading today?

God said that He was fed up with the people and the way that they worshipped Him. They tried to cover up their indifference to God by elaborate and fancy worship services, with elaborate and multiple sacrifices. God is telling the people that He will not have anything to do with them unless and until they make a commitment to change and then actually start changing.

And what is it that God wants the people to do? “Stop doing the wicked things. Learn to do what is good. Seek justice. Rescue those who are being treated unjustly. Decide cases in favor of the orphans and make sure that widows are treated right. When you have done this, then we shall have a dialog.”

I don’t think that God is saying that we should stop holding worship services but that our worship services should be a part of our lives and that our lives should reflect what it is that is the basis for our faith.

And Jesus said the same thing. He pointed out that our heart lies where our treasures are and if that means that we value material wealth more than spiritual wealth we are in trouble. If we put ourselves before others, we have a problem. It is hard to read the story in Luke, in part because we do not understand the customs of society two thousand years ago. But we also have a problem with a call that says that the master should feed the servants or even help them with their tasks. And yet that is exactly what Jesus is saying.

Now, I cannot answer the questions that you may have where it concerns faith and the path that you should walk. I am, as I said at the beginning, still trying to find that path myself. But I know this. The answers are there if you but ask the question. And there are those who are going to turn to you for the help in answering their own questions.

When Francis Collins found that the answers he had worked so long to find were not the right answers he turned to a neighbor for help. And that neighbor was a United Methodist minister.

There are going to be those who seek answers and come to this place because something inside them tells them that this is the place where the answers can be found. They will find those who speak out against the injustice and cruelty in the world; they will also find those who will go to Bolivia or Haiti or Biloxi to work.

In a world where love is just another four-letter world, they will see in some the love of Christ, a love which has grown over the years and seems to be growing even today. They see a person who serves the people of the church and the community, not because it is their turn to do so or because it is the “right” thing to do but because it is what Jesus commanded us to do.

They will see someone who will go out of their way to help someone, not expecting anything in return. They will see someone who will bake a cake to celebrate any occasion.

There are a lot of questions in this world; most of them start with “why?” And many of them can be answered by the way we respond to the world. The question to be asked at this time is “are you prepared to do God’s work in this world?” I leave the answer to that question to you.

What Does The Future Hold?

How shall we view the future? Will it be a rosy and cheerful vision or will it be full of gloom overshadowed by a foreboding sense of doom? Or will it be somewhere between these two extremes?

The problem is that any vision of the future is based on what we know and experience today. If we see things rosy, then the future will be likewise. If we see a world of gloom in our future, then it is likely to be so. And whatever our vision might be, it often blinds us to other visions.

We want the church to be the answer; we want church to give us that rosy and cheerful vision. Churches are seen as havens of optimism and good tidings. They are places where the troubles of the world can be left on the doorstep and forgotten for a few brief moments in time. People come to church today because they know they will hear nothing about the secular world and its problems. And if people do hear about these problems, they are told that other people’s sins and the evil that lurks in the world cause such problems.

Churches today offer a rosy view of the future. They give people a place to hide; they preach a gospel message centered on blame and division. To the public, the church in America today is pro-war, pro-rich, and most definitely pro-American. (This and other comments were adapted from Jim Wallis’ commentary in SoJoMail from August 11, 2004.)  We have leaders, both political and theological, who preach to the majority, fearful of speaking the truth because it will make people uncomfortable. To preach the Gospel message that Jesus brought us is no longer politically, socially, or theologically expedient. (This and other comments were adapted from Rev. We like to think that being Christian gives us comfort and insulates us from the outside world. It enables us to be for war because war combats evil. It enables us to ignore the homeless, the hungry, the oppressed because those individuals are the victims of their own actions and sins.

Churches today are not places where people want to be reminded about the troubles of the world. People do not want to know that the Gospel message calls for them to work against war and hunger, oppression and inequality. If a child dies somewhere, that child must have done something wrong. Or perhaps God was punishing the parents for some unimaginable sin they committed once in their lives. Whatever the reason, it is of no concern to today’s church.

If someone is poor or homeless, it is his or her problem. There is nothing the church can do that will help such individuals. Besides, such people are lazy, shiftless and sinners; sin is not to be rewarded by the actions of the church. And besides, it is of no concern to today’s church.

And Christians who oppose the war and feel that the true message of the Gospel is to fight oppression do not speak out for fear of ridicule and opposition.

Somewhere along the line, we forgot that this rationale that our sins dictate the direction of our life comes from the Old Testament. We have forgotten that this idea was left behind at the foot of a cross on a hill far away.

As I was writing this it occurred to me and maybe it occurred to you as well that the world of today is a lot like it was some two hundred and fifty years ago. John Wesley started the Methodist revival because he saw a church that preached a prosperity gospel and was oblivious to the needs and wants of the poor. It was a strikingly uncompassionate church and it needed reviving. I wonder what John Wesley might think of the church today. I also wonder what Dietrich Bonhoeffer might say to churches of today who ignore the poor and whose leaders tow the party line. What would either of these two say to those whose view of the future does not keep the cross in plain sight?

I first encountered Dietrich Bonhoeffer when I was in college. His name kept coming up in situations related to the ant-war movement of the sixties. But I didn’t know who he was or why his thoughts were so important to that moment in time.

When he was in his mid-twenties, Dietrich Bonhoeffer was recognized as one of the brightest theological minds of all times. Yet, with his great understanding of the Bible and theology, he wrestled with the idea of what being a Christian was all about. In part, this dissonance between his mental life and his daily life came because of what was happening in Germany at that time, the early 1930’s. He saw a church where many leaders welcomed with open arms Adolf Hitler and many others simply acquiesced to the rise of Nazism, hoping that it would all go away.

Bonhoeffer was living in America and could have stayed here, safe from the troubles in Germany. But God called him to go home. In Germany, he worked to overthrow the Third Reich and help smuggle Jews out of Germany. He was arrested and imprisoned for two years. He was executed for his part in the attempted assassination of Hitler four days before Allied troops liberated the prison camp where he was imprisoned.

During those two years he thought and wrote about faith, God, life, and the church. He already knew that grace without discipleship was meaningless. In prison, I think that he began to see why. He wrote of missing worship services though he could not explain why. He wrote of a deeper sense of God’s involvement in our lives. He began to see how we are able to bring good out of evil, much in the manner that Joseph saw through the injustices of his brothers and the plans of a vindictive and rejected wife to the uniqueness of God’s own plan. Most importantly, Bonhoeffer saw that crisis becomes that edge where change is possible. But such change requires something greater than human nature. That something is our faith in God.

Faith is the one common factor in all those mentioned in the letter to the Hebrews. It was their faith that sustained them through all their troubling times. It was the faith of those who came before us and it was faith that built this church.

So too will it be our faith that leads to the riches of tomorrow. We may not know who will reap those riches; certainly it will not be us. The words of Isaiah make it clear that we will not be here to enjoy the fruits of our labors. We plant the vineyard today so that others may enjoy the fruits tomorrow.

So, just as Isaiah offered a vision of the future, perhaps it is time for us to offer a new vision of the future, a vision based on the Gospel and one that does truly offer hope and promise for the future. We need to begin reminding people that faith hates violence and tries to reduce it. We need to be reminding people that faith challenges us to do justice for the poor instead of preaching a "prosperity" gospel. We need to be reminding people that faith creates a community from class, racial, and gender divisions. And it is that our faith upon which the values of family and life are based.

How did you feel when the Gospel message from Luke was read this morning? Many people feel uncomfortable hearing Jesus proclaim that He came to create division, not eliminate it. The thing is that people see God in the rosiest of all scenarios and God doesn’t do confrontation anymore. Did not Jesus come to heal and join us all together? So how is it that he preaches division and confrontation?

But what does God expect of us? He expects us to confront the status quo and say that holding on to the same old things don’t work. He expects us to confront poverty and help people out of poverty by working for equality, not simply blaming one’s economic status on the sins they have committed.

Confrontation has and will be a major part of God’s presence in our lives. Did not God direct Moses to confront the Pharaoh and in no uncertain terms say, "Let my people go"? Were the prophets not told by God to confront the people and challenge them to change their ways? Will Jesus not confront the status quo and drive out the moneychangers in the temple? Will Jesus not confront the status quo when He gets to Jerusalem? If this is what the Bible has been telling us, how then shall we see life?

If our world were nothing but a place of created goodness and beauty, a space of flourishing for all, just and life giving for all in God’s creation, then there would be no need to be challenged by the Gospel message. In fact, the Gospel message would not be needed. (This and other comments were adapted from Teresa Burger’s "Living by the Word" in the August 10, 2004 issue of Christian Century)

But our world is in fact deeply marred and scared by countless conflicts; it brings death and destruction in many forms. Ours is a world that exploits all of its inhabitants and it is hardly sustainable. We seek to use our limited resources without thought for those who follow us. We leave the future with the debts and burdens of today. We may wish for a rosy future but the one that that comes appears to be otherwise.

If the future is to be otherwise, we must then prepare the ground and work the soil now, so that what we do does ensure a bountiful harvest. We need to reclaim our faith and say to others that here is a place where the Holy Spirit is alive and growing again. I propose that on September 11th, a date chosen as much for convenience as for its irony, we hold an old-fashion, on-the-lawn revival. Let us say to others that it is our faith, which has given us the strength to move forward and let us call on others to renew and reclaim their faith as well.

Invite those you know; invite those you don’t know. Challenge your friends, your neighbors but take this moment to see the future in hopeful terms, in terms of being able to help others enjoy the fruits of our labors, just as we are able to enjoy the fruits of the labors of those who came before us.

What does the future hold? It is hard to say. But we can say that we can, with the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, make it a future worthy of those who sought to make their future worthy enough for us.

Time Has Come Today

“The time has come,” the Walrus said, “to talk of many things: of shoes – and ships – and sealing wax – of cabbages – and kings – and why the sea is boiling hot – and whether pigs have wings.” (“The Walrus and the Carpenter”, from Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There by Lewis Carroll, 1872)

Now, I am not entirely sure if this quote from the Walrus has any sort of allegorical meaning to it. Lewis Carroll, or rather, Charles Dodgson was a mathematician and logician as well as a writer and I am sure that many people have delved into the “true meaning” of these words. It might also be that because Dodgson was also an Anglican minister that there is some religious symbolism in his writing as well. I will save such discussions for other times and other places and perhaps let others speak to those points

For me, I use the quote because it relates to time. And time is an important part of the Bible, especially with regards to the Gospel reading for today. There are those who would call the passage from Luke an “End Times” reading and I would have to agree with them. It speaks to that point in time that we all will ultimately reach and how we will react to that moment. But I don’t hear too many people using this passage much when they speak of the “End Times.”

Perhaps it is because it runs counter to the notion that we have applied to Christianity today. I cannot help but think that those pastors and religious leaders who so loudly proclaim that these are the “End Times” are among some of the richest pastors in the world. They push very hard to say that sexual immorality is the cause of our country’s problems but I have yet to hear any of them say that greed is part of the problem.

And yet, while Paul does speak against such earthly sins, he puts greed on the list as well. And when you stop to think about it, I am not going to talk about who loves whom when so many people go hungry every day, when people are still losing their homes to foreclosure, and the gap between the rich and poor grows every day.

I have pointed this out before; there are quite a few people outside the church today who, no matter how hard you try and how often you invite them, simply will not come in. They know what Christ said on matters of war, violence, poverty, hunger, and personal relationships. They are among those who note that those who proclaim themselves judge and jury when it comes to moral behavior are strangely silent when it comes to matters of war, violence, poverty and hunger (or, if they say anything, it is to support war and justify violence and say that poverty and hunger are not issues for the church to be involved with). It is no wonder that those outside the church today have no desire to be a part of a church where the rhetoric inside the church hardly matches the words and actions of the early church.

Now, don’t get me wrong; immoral behavior of any kind is not good behavior. But to say that the destruction of the world will arise from only that behavior is a sad interpretation of the Bible. And a focus on such behavior ignores other problems, the impact of which has far greater ramifications than who loves whom.

Now, to me, the major theme of the Bible is our relationship with God. In the Old Testament, the major theme is idolatry and that makes sense. After all, practically every prophet spends most of his time warning the people about their insistence on worshiping other gods. Look again at the Old Testament reading for today and read how Hosea begins by pointing out that the people of Israel have left God for Baal and other gods.

The second most prominent theme in the Old Testament is poverty and social justice. The two are related because how you treat others reflects how you view God. And this theme is also reflected in the New Testament. One out of every sixteen verses in the New Testament is about the poor. It increases to one out of ten when you examine only the Gospels; in Luke it is one out of seven. In the Book of James, it is one out of five.

If you take the poor and how they are treated out of the Bible, the Bible will fall apart. Now, this isn’t a left-right, liberal-conservative thing. It is about what we, who say we are Christians, believe and do with and in our lives. The problem with the “End Times” mentality is that it offers no options; you are either saved already or you never will be saved. But, then again, I have never accepted that notion.

And I listen to what God said to the people through Hosea and I read what Paul wrote to the Colossians. These are the “End Times” if we do not change. But the end will come because of what we do, not what God will do. God’s love is still present, just as it was for the Israelites and He still loves them, even if they stray. It is up to the Israelites and thus it is up to us to return to God.

And we must cast off that which has caused the problem, the greed, the selfishness, the self-centeredness that is destroying the world. We must look to Christ and see in His actions, the actions that have saved us. We cannot live in a world where people are divided by class, economic status, culture, race, or creed. For in the end, we are all one people.

When I chose the name for this sermon, I remembered my fascination with a 1968 Chambers Brothers’ song, “Time Has Come Today”. My interest/fascination was probably because of the cadenza that increased the playing time from some 3 minutes to almost 11 minutes. It was one of many songs of that period that began to change the nature of rock and roll music. It was not by any means a Christian rock and roll song like “Are You Ready” by Pacific Gas & Electric was.

But throughout “Time Has Come Today” you hear sound effects that imitate a clock ticking and you get the impression that time is beginning to run out.

There are those who will say that we cannot come to the table this morning because we don’t meet some sort of pre-determined qualification test. But that test was passed a long time ago on a hill far away. When Christ gathered the people together for the Last Supper, it was to begin the New Kingdom. He made the choice so we would not have to. We come to the table this morning knowing that when we leave this place and this time and go out into the world that we must decide whether we shall live as the people of Christ or whether we shall live as the people of the earth. Time has come today, just as it came for the rich man. It is time to make a choice and despite what others might say, you have a choice, a choice that the rich man didn’t have.
