Heavenhells is an RPG with an anime aesthetic, inspired by Heaven Burns Red, that challenges you to lead a team made up of four WiTCHes. These fighters, brimming with personality, allow you to attack the Hellions to close the gates of the dreaded Purgatory once and for all.
Manual combat mechanics
One of Heavenhells's most interesting aspects is that, after watching the opening sequence, you will have to jump straight into your first battles against huge creatures. Unlike similar games with automatic battles, in this RPG you need to manually select the vast majority of attacks during each round. You will have the WiTCHes' cards available at the bottom of the interface to help you bring each member of your team to the fore. To the left, you will have several skill buttons that you can also use at specific moments to increase your attack power.
A well-crafted anime-style narrative
In Heavenhells, as well as the combat, you can enjoy well-crafted anime-style cinematic sequences. The narrative will take you to neatly designed 3D settings, where your fighters will engage in dialogue and execute abilities non-stop during combat. On top of that, the title's gacha system allows you to unlock the best WiTCHes to take on even the most powerful Hellions.
My experience playing Heavenhells
After quickly downloading the additional data needed in order to play, I was met with a powerful introductory sequence that piqued my interest. After this, I was able to name my squad and start fighting the first enemies. Although I was unable to select the members of my team during the first game, I did have the option of manually selecting the abilities I considered most helpful to deplete each Hellion's health. What's more, the animations felt quite smooth, and the temperature of my mid-range POCO F5 barely changed. On the other hand, I encountered little in terms of innovation in the gameplay and visual identity compared to better-known titles in the genre, like Heaven Burns Red.
What I liked most about Heavenhells and what could be improved
• What I liked most: The transitions between battles and the animations that make the dialogues, narrative, and connections between the WiTCHes key parts of the game.
• What could be improved: The aesthetics lack originality and the game features overly complex combat right from the start. I feel the learning curve should be more gradual so as not to overwhelm less experienced players.
Heavenhells is for you if
✓ You are looking for an anime RPG with manual strategic combat, not purely automatic.
✓ You want a deep narrative and well-crafted cinematic sequences.
