At the moment I’ve not got much time at the art table, it’s either in the office or on trains and planes so I’m using the photo apps as a kind of sketching tool, playing with and recording ideas to develop later. I’ve been quite taken with how good they are at getting ideas down very quickly, even on a cramped budget flight when even getting a sketchbook and pens out seems like a bit hard work.
So from these quickie photo mash ups I’m getting ideas for new models, collages and drawings. I’ve always been drawn to those extraordinary churches on top of rock pillars, how they hell did they build those things, it’s an amazing achievement. And I’ve always loved islands; I can remember how exciting I found St. Michaels Mount in Cornwall when we visited on a family holiday. This tiny little community on its own island out to sea was thrilling to me then and it still is. So I’m thinking of making some work based on these ideas, a series of imaginary towers and tiny worlds sat atop steep rocky islets, just asking to be explored.
