Oldies, but goodies.

Today started out like any other day. But then there were some extra people here this morning (of which I only met one because I went upstairs with the boys) looking at the boiler because I guess there’s some odd problem with it. Another difference was that Bastien only asked for a movie twice! I told him he could have one after his nap and he seemed content with that. We spent a couple of hours listening to an Henri Des CD. I have to say, his music is quite entertaining (even though it’s meant for kids). I find a lot of his songs catchy.

Lunch was, well, it was different. Different because Bastien was very calm and it was Sylvain who was acting out. I think he was pretty tired. He did have a nap this morning, but we ate a little late so I don’t know. They both took a decent length nap this afternoon which gave me time to chill and watch some Criminal Minds. What I really need to do while they’re napping is clean my room. It’s not as bad as when there were two of us living in here, but it needs a good vacuum. And the couch is covered in clean laundry that needs to be folded. I have to go through and organize some clothes as well. Like my shorts and capris – I doubt I’ll be wearing them anymore. It got up in the low 20°s today, but I think it’s going to be ‘pant’ season from here on out.

Adeline got home while we were watching the movie (Rango  again) and Greg a little after here. They left before it was finished to go to a birthday party. So it was just the boys and I for supper. First though was baths. Sylvain was extra exuberant in there tonight.  Adeline had bought mini-cucumbers for Bastien and he had two! He loves cucumbers and pickles. We had left over turkey from last night, salad, and I put some potato balls in the oven. I actually almost forgot about that part – potatoes/rice/etc. – and then I remembered the potatoes in the freezer and through a few in the oven. They weren’t ready when we sat down so I used them to get Bastien to eat his turkey. And Sylvain has more new pj’s! The one’s I put on him tonight are green and a dark grey with Tigger on them. Cute ^_^. Two piece pj’s are good right now. I didn’t have any problems getting them to bed which was good because I had Skype plans.

I Skype’d with a friend of mine from high school who spent some time studying in Quebec and working in Normandy, France. We talked a bit in French. At least we have each other to practice with! I got to say hello to her Dad as well. We talked about how pretty much everyone from our high school group (which wasn’t very big to begin with) is all over the place. Our one friend moved to the States (where he husband is from), another is in Hamilton for school, another is all over the place (between Canada, the USA, and Europe working with horses), one in Toronto, another in Law school in London, England…and she might be leaving for co-op. She thinks she’ll still be around by the time I get back, but will be leaving sometime in January (if she gets a position). I still have a lot of other friends in the area, but that group of us from high school has really drifted apart. I guess that’s life. We all have drastically different interests, in some ways it’s a wonder we’re still friends or became friends in the first place. Obviously we have things in common, but you know. I’m glad we’re still friends though and I know that this won’t be the last time I’ll see them. We just might have more ‘online’ type friendships in the future. Steph and I have another Skype ‘date’ set for the 26th. We’re going to try to make it a regular thing. It was really nice to see her and talk with her.

So that was my day and I’m not sure how I’m going to end it; a movie, more tv? Or bed? It’s a tough decision!

Crème Brûlée with the family

I just got off Skype with my family…a whole bunch of family. It was my family on my Dad’s side, they all went out to King’s Buffet for my Grandpa’s birthday and then back to my Aunt Deanna and Uncle Tony’s house and that’s when we talked. It was 3pm there when we started. I actually missed the first two calls because we were finishing an episode of ‘Chuck’. I gave them some info about what I’ve done and a tour of the house. They had the computer hooked up to the TV, so I can only imagine how big my head looked…

Greg brought me in some crème brûlée, but warned my not to eat it right away because it was trés, trés chaud. Eventually I tried it (I didn’t want it to get cold) and they were teasing me about eating in front of them. They wanted to try some so I held it up in front of my webcam. It is very, very sweet. I think I need some milk now.

This afternoon we went to Sybille’s house for goûter to celebrate Charles’ birthday. Lots of cake and sweet stuff then too. I think I’ve had enough sweet stuff to last me a week! But it’s all worth it. I will definitely have something interesting to write about next Saturday (at least interesting for me and other choir lovers out there). Jean-Go and Adeline’s Dad is in a choir (they have a couple of CD’s out) and they have a concert next Saturday night. I’m going with Sybille. I’m quite excited! If I didn’t have my French class Monday nights I would be able to sing with him, but alas, my schedule does not permit that.

It was neat, the family Skype chat. There were some family there I wasn’t expecting, but I guess it makes sense because it’s a pretty important birthday my Grandpa is celebrating. I won’t announce it here though…tee hee hee. We sang Happy Birthday in French for him (Adeline, Greg, and I), but they made us do it again because they wanted to record it! I also think a few people were taking pictures of the TV…my Dad’s family is photo-trigger happy, but you gotta love ’em for it. Especially since we’ll have all kinds of pictures to remember things by! If I ever become famous I’ll be totally used to constant flashes of light….I’ve had 25 years of preparation!

Anywho…I need to take out my contacts, things are starting to get blurry. In other (great) news, my parents and sister have booked their plane tickets. They fly in July 22. I might just start a countdown…I’m just a little excited. Yes I miss them, of course, but I’m just excited to show them around and to be able to share everything with them. I feel like the last (almost) 2 months have gone by both really slow and really fast. The year will be up before I know it, which makes me sad and happy. Sad because it will be the end to a great and wonderful experience and happy because all in all, I’m a Canadian girl at heart and there’s a part of me that misses home…but not a very big part yet!

Crêpes!

Today started off as an interesting day. I drove Bastien to the babysitter’s, but I almost fell a bunch of times! I was silly and wore my running shoes when I knew it was icy, but I didn’t think it was that bad! I was a very cautious driver…for many reasons but mostly because I had Bastien with me!

So because of the ice I didn’t end up going on my daily walk :(. But I did get to talk with my aunt Diane in B.C. for an hour! It was noon here (so 3am there) and she couldn’t sleep so she came online to see if I was on and we chatted via Skype.

Right now Sylvain is sick, so we’re being extra careful. He’s got a cough and has some trouble breathing. He’s been to the doctor and the hospital…he’s at the hospital right now. They’re keeping him over night just to make sure there’s nothing terribly wrong. He may be sick, but he was still smiling today and giggling. It was so adorable. He has got one of the cutest smiles I’ve ever seen. It’s a joy when he gives you one.

Tonight for supper we had crêpes. Not the dessert kind, but with eggs and ham. They were really tasty.

I also just got off of Skype with my parents – you gotta love those unplanned calls when you want to post to your blog and go to bed early, but it just doesn’t happen because you spend an hour talking. That is my split personality talking – I was being both serious and sarcastic. Just thought you would all want to know. 🙂 Also, according to my Mom lots of people have been asking if I’m homesick…the answer is no. Tee hee hee. I mean, sure, there are some things I miss I guess, but really, I’ve never been one to be homesick. Except for the people I worked with and saw at school I didn’t really see people on a regular basis, so as of yet it doesn’t necessarily feel like I’m far away. It’ll feel that way during holidays when I should be getting together with the family. Maybe then I’ll feel a bit homesick, but for now I’m fine.

I will leave you all with a picture of my dinner. I started eating before I thought ‘oh! Picture opportunity!’ I wonder if I will ever get sick of taking pictures of food….

Skype is a wonderful thing…most of the time.

And so ends the first month of this year of our Lord two-thousand and eleven. I didn’t really do much today except go to French class. I’m getting a little more comfortable in it and with the people. It seems like every class there’s someone new, so I’m no longer ‘the new one’. I’m the only native English speaker and there are 3 other girls who are the only one’s to speak their native language; one from Russia, one from Kenya, and one from Vietnam. For everyone else in the class there’s at least one other person who speaks their mother tongue! Although, quite a few of them speak a little English (for example, the 3 I give rides home to) so between French and English we make it through. Although I’m getting better at just relying on the French.

There’s this one guy (he’s married with children…don’t get any ideas) who jokes around a lot. We’ve been talking about food and nutrition the past few classes and he says he’s ham. Or a ham. Basically, he is a big ham :D. And people say women talk a lot! The guys don’t stop talking! They’re always joking around, it’s like elementary school all over again, but it’s fun. We all still learn and even though there is sometimes giggling when we try to pronounce things and do it wrong and have to try a million times (it happens to everyone), it’s all in good fun and we know that our turn for messing up will come! Everybody’s really friendly. I can’t remember everyone’s names yet, partly because the name part goes by fast, partly because they are names I’m not familiar with, and partly because everyone has some sort of accent that makes it hard for me to catch what is name and what is other stuff sometimes. And I wouldn’t even  know where to begin spelling the one’s I do sort of remember!

So basically, it’s becoming something that I can look forward too instead of be super nervous about.

Also, I just spent the last couple hours chatting with my friend Bronwyn via Skype. It’s amazing how time flies. We couldn’t use video because it said the internet connection wasn’t good enough. She said she doesn’t have very good internet, but it was still nice to hear her voice. So…By 9pm or so (3pm your time) I’m usually free. If you happen to be online and want to Skype with me look me up! I’m listed as living in Belgium. Just search my name and Belgium (Wasseiges) and you should find me!

I went for another walk today. I figured out the route I’ve been taking is about 5kms or so (give or take .5km). That’s a nice hour long trek to make a few times a week (everyday would be great!). I just stick in my headphones and off I go! It’s pretty chilly again, so I’ve got my hoodie tied up and my jacket hood and scarf and mits…the only thing I’m missing is my snow pants (that I was sort of considering because the wind gets pretty nippy…but there’s no snow). It really feels like it takes no time at all and once you get off the main road there’s not much traffic.

Oh! One other thing I wanted to mention is the difference between town signs here and in Canada.

<–   Welcome to Wasseiges! (All town signs are similar)

Goodbye Wasseiges    –>

Happy Birthday!

Ok. So because of the wonderful world of different times zones, I’m technically NOT late in getting this post up. I’ve still managed to post everyday. Now, I had in mind this wonderfully long, informative post planned, but as it is almost 1am here I need to go to bed. I would have had my post up, but I got a webcam for my birthday and wanted to Skype my family and we talked longer than I had planned.

I will leave you with some enticements to check back in tomorrow; we went to this Italian restaurant (a REAL one, not your local version of East Side Mario’s) and then visited the brewery that makes the Troll beer I had (back in the post Belgian…beer?) for a birthday treat. So come back tomorrow for a detailed account of the evening, pictures included!

Au revoir!
