Myanmar’s Starving Children

May 18, 2008

What would you do if you had an isolationist neighbor who was starving his children simply because he did not want outside influences or interferences in his household? You would probably call the cops and they would probably break down his door, arrest him and take the children into protective custody.

Well, this is exactly what is going on except instead of the isolationist being your next door neighbor it’s a country who’s leader depends on an astrologer to advise him on national matters!
I have been posting on this situation from the start and it shocks me that all the international community has done is talk and what aid they have been able to send is being turned over to the Myanmar Junta who in turn have been selling it at the highest prices to the survivors of Cyclone Nargis and the international community does nothing! Right now thousands of children are starving. Currently it is estimated that one third of the dead in Myanmar are children ( video ).

When is the international community going to get off its ass and say dam to diplomacy and go in and help these starving human beings? I find it impossible to believe the degree of hair-splitting that is going on while hundreds even thousands are literally starving to death and a good part of them are children!
The international community should try skipping THEIR meals for the next couple of days and see what it feels like. You can read the latest report here: Starvation warning for Myanmar’s children

The Human Tragedy of Myanmar

May 9, 2008

It goes beyond comprehension why the Myanmar Junta government has refused to permit the international community to render aid and assistance its people.
It has become quite obvious by now that the junta is exploiting the situation for all it can.
On Friday, Japan said it will give aid worth $10 million through the U.N. to Myanmar, adding to the massive amounts of aid that has been pledged by foreign governments.
Why I ask? The money is obviously going to go to the junta and the people will be lucky if they see one thin dime!
I checked the state-owned New Light of Myanmar newspaper and the last entry they have is Friday, May 2, 2008. ( http://www.myanmar.com/newspaper/nlm/ ) The cyclone struck on May 3, 2008.
To make matters worse there is a monster storm churning in the South China Sea and looks to be headed toward the coast of south China which could include Myanmar ( again ) as well as its neighbors. We can only watch and see.

And again I ask What of Aung San Suu Kyi? I fear for her safety in these dark times.

Rumours of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s release spreads in Rangoon

Mizzima News Saturday, 24 May 2008 15:32
New Delhi – Rumours are doing the rounds in Rangoon that Burma’s detained pro-democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was released today from house arrest.
Nyan Win, spokesperson of the National League for Democracy (NLD), Aung San Suu Kyi’s party, said, “We also heard that she [Aung San Suu Kyi] has been released, but we cannot confirm the information as yet.”

You can read more here.

I have it from an informed source that her house is currently surrounded by security and no one can get near it. NLD ( National League for Democracy ) was having a meeting this afternoon, and supposedly planned to march to her house. This may be the reason for the additional security. From what I have been told there has not been any verification of Aung San Suu Kyi’s release.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s home damaged by cyclone

Mizzima News Wednesday, 07 May 2008 23:28
New Delhi – Portions of the roof of the house of Noble Peace Laureate and pro-democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on University Avenue in Rangoon’s Bahan Township has been damaged by the killer cyclone that lashed Burma during the weekend.
A local resident, who keeps a close watch over the Burmese dissident leader’s home, told Mizzima over telephone that parts of the roof of Suu Kyi’s house were damaged and the gate leading to her house was hit by an uprooted tree.

“I saw parts of the roof broken and saw the uprooted tree hit the gate but the army has removed the tree,” the local, who wished not to be identified, said.

“I have also heard that the government is going to repair her [Aung San Suu Kyi] house,” he added.

_______

Since I have been keeping track of the Tibetan situation I have somewhat neglected what has been going on in Myanmar. I will try to make it up on this post.
The first thing that comes to mind right away is what of Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar? I read a report earlier that she has been seen in her home which is currently without electricity. The junta does not consider the area as a high priority so little if any help is reaching that sector. In fact the military junta is exploiting the situation and there are reports that they are selling food and water at largely inflated prices. A liter of water that cost $.30 before the cyclone now cost $4.00!
Below are a series of videos from YouTube showing the devastation that has taken place. Please note how clean the junta soldiers are when they are seen. Obviously they are not suffering along with the people!
