Deja Vu All Over Again

24 June, 2009

This story has gotten old.  An asshat who has declared that gays enjoying the same rights as other humans will destroy the sanctity of marriage.  An asshat who has played the morality card multiple times.  An asshat who wants to turn down most of the stimulus money heading for his state to make political points in the hopes of being the GOP candidate in 2012.  An asshat who then gets caught with his pants down.  Read the rest of this entry ?

Yea Tho’ I Drive Through the Valley of Christians . . . .

29 December, 2008

(((Wife)), (((Boy))), (((Girl))) and I had a wonderful (for the most part) holiday with (((Wife)))’s family down in Florida.   We drove down Monday night into Tuesday morning, spent the 24th at the Magic Kingdom (with a fantastic meal at the Crystal Palace restaurant), enjoyed Christmas day at the in-laws, visited Epcot on Friday, and had a huge meal at the Cheesecake Factory and went for a boat ride on Saturday and drove home on Sunday.  The drive down and back is an easy one:  I-81 to I-77 to I-26 to I-95 to I-4 (and the reverse for the trip home) and just under 1,100 miles (about 18 hours (including stops for meals)).   Here are a few observations from our trip: Read the rest of this entry ?

Bouncing Reality Off Of A Skull

22 November, 2008

A friend of mine firmly believes that the evil Democrats are stealing the senatorial election in Minnesota.  He claims that (a) demanding a recount will not let the voter’s vote count, that (b) the Democrat’s are trying to throw out every Republican voter’s ballot, and (c) that the U.S. Supreme Court declared recounts unconstitutional back in 2000.  My attempted answers (I say attempted because they bounced off of his thick skull like psi off of a Thennanin’s skull (and if you get that allusion, you are as much an sci-fi geek as I am (and yes, that is a complement))) (in reverse order)?  Read the rest of this entry ?

OBAMA IS PRESIDENT-ELECT!!!!!

5 November, 2008

Barack Obama is projected to win the Presidency of the United States of America.  Not only has America, as a nation, rejected the obscenity of the Bush years, we have also rejected the nativist racism and know-nothingism of the party which John McCain represents.

I have to admit, I have tears welling up in the corners of my eyes.

Another Democrat for Obama

4 November, 2008

(((Wife))) and I are back from voting.  Actually, we voted in the early afternoon.  There were a total of four people in line ahead of us.  There were only three electronic voting machines.  We were voters 279 and 280.

While waiting for (((Wife))), I asked another voter (we were away from the machines at this point) why he was voting for McCain.  I guessed he was voting for McCain because of the “Another Democrat for McCain” button.  He said he was not sure about Obama.

“What are you not sure about?” I asked. Read the rest of this entry ?

Yeah! My Team Lost!

4 November, 2008

I have been a Redskins fan since I was born (my dad is from the DC area).  I’m happy that the ‘Skins are having a good year.  I’m surprised that they are having a good year.

Last night, they lost 23 to 6 to the Steelers.  And I’m happy about that.  Why? Read the rest of this entry ?

Vote Reality

3 November, 2008

Neoconservatism is based upon faith.  Faith that, if we deregulate business and finance, they will suddenly behave themselves and act ethically.  Faith that, if we lie to children about sex and prophylaxis, they will not experiment with their bodies.  Faith that we will be welcomed with flowers in Bhagdad.  Faith that tax cuts pay for themselves.  Faith that tax cuts for the rich will help the poor.  Faith that one can shape reality, can create a new reality, through sheer willpower.  Faith that, because we are creating a new reality, the laws do not apply.  Faith that everything that our founding fathers wrote has been misinterpreted by virtually every historian and that we are a Christian nation.

Faith, as I have said before (see here and here) is the ability to believe something despite no evidence or evidence to the contrary. Read the rest of this entry ?

Vote Science

3 November, 2008

One of the more disturbing trends in American politics is Know-Nothing-ism.  The actual Know Nothingists were an 1850s party (even before Ric’s time) who were trying to save America for the Americans and keep out all those whiskey-besotted Catholic Irishmen.  Though the Know-Nothing Party had a short life, the continuation of the attitude has a long and healthy history, mostly among reactionary and conservative voters.

Modern conservatism is a know-nothing party on multiple levels.  One level is the intense secrecy.  The Republican Party is secretive to the point of psychosis.  Even routine memos and public statements are labeled secret.  No part of our government is too insignificant or harmless to be hidden from the eyes of the citizens.  Part of this does, to be honest, make sense.  I think that many citizens would be horrified if they found out who was helping the political appointees make the rules. Vote Competence

2 November, 2008

One of my friends is a Republican. Dyed in the wool, lifelong Republican.  He also rationalizes to an unbelievable extent.  Why is he voting for McCain and Palin?  A couple of reasons.  Abortion (he seems to think that Republicans would actually shoot that cash cow).  Taxes (he seems to think that Obama will raise his taxes and McCain will cut them).  Competence (he seems to think that during the last seven years and nine months the nation has been run with competence).

Competence?  Competence?  I asked him to name one thing that the Bush administration has done right.  Read the rest of this entry ?
