Meet Omar, a mango farmer in Kenya’s Tana River region. We met Omar through Project ALIVE*, a programme delivered with Concern Worldwide, focused on improving nutrition, health screening, and farm productivity across Kenyan communities. Through the programme, Omar works with newer mango tree varieties that grow faster and require less space. By sharing the knowledge he learns with other smallholder farmers in his community, he helps more families get greater value from the land they rely on. Omar is one of 50 farmers supported through education and training as part of Project ALIVE. Over the past four years, the programme has helped produce 2.7m kg of diverse food crops, valued at KSh 141.2m (€974k), boosting local food supply and farmer incomes. *Agricultural Livelihoods Improving Value Chains and the Environment #Agriculture #Farming #Farmers

We’re pleased to share that the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published a positive scientific opinion on Kerry’s Acrylerase - a first of its kind food enzyme designed to significantly reduce acrylamide in instant coffee and coffee substitutes. The opinion comes at a time of increased EU focus on acrylamide in coffee products. Acrylamide is a process related contaminant formed during high temperature processing such as roasting and is treated in the EU as a substance of concern due to its genotoxic and carcinogenic properties. Under Regulation (EU) 2017/2158, food business operators are required to apply mitigation measures and monitor levels against benchmark values, driving demand for effective, practical solutions. Acrylerase targets acrylamide after it has formed, directly decomposing it during processing without impacting taste, aroma, yield or operating efficiency. EFSA’s opinion confirms the safety of Acrylerase for its intended use, reinforcing confidence in a targeted, science based approach to acrylamide mitigation. Analytical techniques play a critical role in reducing uncertainty around raw materials, verifying ingredient authenticity, and supporting regulatory compliance across different markets. This latest article from the Kerry Health and Nutrition Institute explores how targeted analytical techniques (which measure predefined metabolites) and untargeted approaches (which characterise the broader biochemical fingerprint) are being used to build confidence in botanical quality and authenticity. Salima is the Secretary of the Elimika Women’s Group in Rhoka, Tana River - a group that plays an important role in supporting women and strengthening local food systems, with a strong focus on reducing food waste and losses across the mango production chain. Since the start of the Kerry–Concern Worldwide ALIVE* programme, post‑harvest mango losses have reduced by 18.24%, enabling farmers to keep more of their produce and increase earnings. Four mango processing units have also been established, helping to further reduce waste while adding value locally and creating 46 jobs within the community. *Agricultural Livelihoods Improving Value Chains and the Environment #FoodWaste #FoodProduction #Mango
