Many of us saw it coming, but we did not want to believe it. The process of marginalising community radio in India has gathered momentum. The silent shutdown of many vibrant transmitters, coupled with the very nature of the community radio stations licensed over the past decade, is the evidence. Instagram has seized the imagination of the young — the very thing we wished community radio would hold. We did not hear the voices of Gen Z on community radio: not in India, not in Nepal, not in Bangladesh. Seven in ten Indians are now online; in the countryside it is barely four in ten. It is time communities took charge of the digital medium. Let us remember the struggle to democratise the airwaves before we meekly surrender digital media to private capital. With these thoughts, Nomad is launching AudioUnites (https://audiounites.org), which makes radio broadcasting over the internet accessible to all. No tower, no studio, no license — just you and your laptop. Your voice goes on air in under three minutes, in multiple Indian, Asian and global languages. We have also wired in the much-hyped AI, which can be a real help on your broadcast journey. AudioUnites is also an experiment in the ethical use of AI: we insist on full disclosure of AI use, because humanity cannot afford to have AI pretending to be human. AudioUnites is live on invitation only. If you would like one, DM me.
