We Rainmatter by Zerodha have decided to back Ergon Labs who are integrating power train components for EV's. This will lead to huge efficiency gains along with cost and weight reduction. Here's a video by Dinesh Pai and I on why we decided to back them and what the landscape is like. We dig into the need of power train component integration and why people haven't done it yet. P.S A huge shout out to Yash Hegde as well who helped put this together here during his time with us!

India sold 2.3 million electric vehicles in 2025. Over 90% were two-wheelers and three-wheelers. But the electrical architecture inside most of them hasn't kept up. Motor controller from one supplier, charger from another, DC-DC converter from a third. Each with its own firmware, its own cooling, its own failure modes. In passenger EVs, this was solved years ago through integration. BYD ships an 8-in-1 powertrain. India's light EV segment is still bolting together separate boxes. We've invested in Ergon Labs, which is building integrated powertrain hardware for two-wheelers and three-wheelers. Their first product combines the motor controller and on-board charger into a single unit. 30% lower cost, 30% less weight, and it charges from any standard 15A wall socket in about an hour. The founding team comes from Rimac, Valeo, Sona Comstar, and Toyota. We should be clear-eyed: automotive qualification cycles are long, scaling hardware production is hard, and many good companies with good technology have stumbled at that transition. But the core technical question, whether you can build an integrated unit that works better than the separate parts, has been answered. The thermal data is real. The on-road kilometres are real. We believe the light EV transition in India comes down to what's under the skin of the vehicle and how efficient it is. Ergon is building that layer.
