Resharing this incredible journey of Netrasemi. TrEST has seen the version of this story together — not at the headline stage, but during the difficult, uncertain years. When Netrasemi was still navigating early challenges, TrEST Research Park had the opportunity to host and support them as part of our incubation ecosystem. No hype. No guarantees. Just a team building something hard. That’s the part people often skip — Deep-tech doesn’t struggle because of lack of ideas. It struggles because very few are willing to stand with it early. Their journey from those phases to entering the global AI chip market is a strong reminder of what’s possible when persistence meets the right environment. We’re glad to have been a small part of that journey and wish the Netrasemi team continued success as they scale globally. If you’re building in deep-tech and playing the long game, you already know — this path isn’t easy and TrEST Research Park is there to hand hold you. #DeepTech #Semiconductors #StartupJourney #Innovation #Kerala #AI #MakeInIndia
Three engineers from Kerala got rejected by Indian VCs for 5 years. Today, they became the first Indian company to enter the global AI chip market In 2014, Jyothis Indirabhai flew home to Trivandrum after ten years as a design manager at Intel. He didn't have a business plan. His own reason for coming back: "I was always a homesick person." He started working on chip designs out of a small office opposite CET. His wife, Deepa Geetha, joined him. An NSS Palakkad engineer who had worked at Intel as a post-silicon validation engineer. So did Sreejith Varma, Jyothis's CET classmate from 1995. Three people and Half a dozen engineers. They bootstrapped with consulting projects to keep the company running. For years, they built AI silicon IP cores — the specialised processing blocks that go inside modern chips. Global chipmakers wanted to license those cores. It would have meant steady royalties and no factory risk. The easy path. In 2020, they walked away from it. They decided to build full chips from Kerala. That's when the real struggle started. Every Indian investor they pitched was used to SaaS. Semiconductors take five to six years to ship anything. A few investors told them to pick another industry. At one point, the three of them were drawing up plans to relocate the whole company to the United States. Then Covid hit. IIM Kozhikode gave them ₹30 lakh during the lockdown. It was their lifeblood. The Indian government stepped in next. Over ₹40 crore through the DLI scheme — grants, reimbursements, and chip-design tools most Indian founders had never touched. Before any VC wrote a cheque, it was the Government of India that had already bet on NetraSemi. By July 2025, Zoho and Unicorn India Ventures led their ₹107 crore Series A. The design files went to TSMC in Taiwan. Same 12-nanometre line that makes chips for Apple. Today, NetraSemi is the first Indian company to enter the global AI chip market. India imports 99.99% of the chips it uses. Manufacturing our own semiconductors has become critical. And the first startup to prove it was possible came from Thiruvananthapuram. P.S. Anyone knew about NetraSemi already? #srkp #startup #entrepreneurship
