Did you get all your Christmas presents yet? I didn’t, actually I’ve only just started! Don’t have to get that many though, but wrapping them, of course, takes time for someone like me, finding the right paper, the right ribbon, the right washi tape. OK I’ve just revealed that I’m a Christmas wrapping neurotic/expert. So psssst! here’s a tip. Hurry up an order the magazine Wrap, it’s a magazine about illustration but each issue has sheets of wrapping paper in it with illustrations from the people who are featured in the magazine. My presents are VERY special! ;-)

You might have noticed that I have a bit of a winter frown on me, one of these days I’m gonna post a photo of Danish winter and you will think I’m living in a black and white movie…correction, a shades of grey movie (no, not the naughty one!) So I find that everything that catches my eye these days, and that I wanna show you guys, has the be FILLED with colour. And here’s another one, when I found Leta Sobierajski I got a huge smile on my face. I kinda wanna live in her photoshoot world where the bananas are polkadotted and the backgrounds are BRIGHT! YAY!

OH…MY…GOD!! It’s been a long time since I was THIS excited, but you will know what I mean when you see the work of Karan Singh. I don’t think I’ve ever seen patterns this great and the use of them in illustrations…and the colours, ohhhhh the colours! I think Mr. Singh may very well have hypnotized me with those moving patterns. Whatever, I don’t care, I will join his cult if I can have a few prints ;-)

I love when lines between creative skills are a little blurred, like why do we actually NEED to discuss what the difference between art and design is (a discussion I seam to be confronted with every other day)? Shouldn’t we just spend time DOING something and not spend time putting things in boxes? Well, to me Andrew B. Myers falls into the blurry landscape somewhere between photographer/illustrator/spatial designer and probably a hundred other things and I don’t give a s***, I just LOVE his work! And I’m putting him in the ‘this and that’ category just because ;-) Photographic pattern making seams to be a big trend and this guy does it SO amazingly.

I am always trying to teach my students how to make something beautiful from things that aren’t necessarily attractive. That’s why I was so happy when I came across design grad Tracy Ma from Canada. She made these wonderful tapestries with patterns made of things she remember from her childhood in Hong Kong. I just love these pieces, they’re the essence of Hong Kong, my home away from home.

It’s a glorious sunny friday morning in Copenhagen! Super busy today but just time to share London based illustrator Karolin Schnoor with you guys. I love her work. The way she uses pattern and colour is amazing and the amount of details in each drawing is impressive. Big fan!

Uhhhhh on a complete high after ordering tickets to my (kinda) hometown Helsinki and Tokyo on the same day. Now I can’t wait to go and find loads of great things to share with all of you. So let’s just start out with a bit of Finnish ambience from Sanna Annukka. She’s recently designed a line for Marimekko (which I shared before) but she’s also added a few other things to her website since last Anukka post. Her milkcartons for Cravendale is an oldie but goodie and I still can’t comprehend why they didn’t run it.

I came across the visual identity project for Paramount the other day and I think Mind Design did quite a good job. I am especially fond of the briefs, the closing mechanism is really clever yet very simple and recognizable. They also did another project with great patterns for Russell Marsh Casting, it’s very simple but really effective in the different media.

Kosuke Ikeda is a fantastic Japanese illustrator who I noticed on a visit to Hong Kong. I love his use of patterns in his drawings.
