Building a just and financially Inclusive future: lessons from Paola Zanet of Banca Etica Today’s online community gathering of the Institute for Social Banking’s Fellowship featured an inspiring session with Paola Zanet, Senior Executive Manager at Banca Etica. 🌳 Banca Etica was founded in 1999 as Italy’s first ethical financial institution, born out of a collaboration between social cooperatives, NGOs, and third-sector organizations seeking alternatives to traditional credit systems. Today, the bank manages €2.5 billion in assets, €1.3 billion in credit, and operates 25 branches across Italy and Spain. Its mission is rooted in three core pillars: active client participation, a commitment to impact in all operations, and complete transparency. This transparency goes as far as publishing a full list of clients—a bold move that demonstrates integrity but also exposes the bank to commercial risk. As one of the first employees of this pioneering bank, Paola shared insights from over two decades of experience. These are three of the lessons she passed on to us: 1. Listen to and learn from your customers Her journey emphasizes the importance of learning from and a listening to your customers. She recalls a formative year in the contact center, speaking directly with clients to understand their real needs. 2. Ethical finance is about real societal needs As Paola stressed, ethical finance is not about branding or marketing—it’s about meeting real societal needs. She encouraged anyone interested in this field to step away from their screens and immerse themselves in the lives and challenges of the communities they aim to serve. 3. Be determined and collaborate To advance ethical finance, Banca Etica collaborates with universities, and like-minded institutions like the members of our own Institute for Social Banking (we are very thankful to experience their support!), the Global Alliance for Banking on Values of banking on values, FEBEA - European Federation of Ethical and Alternative Banks and Financiers. While it's encouraging to see ethical finance gaining popularity, Paola reminds us that this movement was built through years of hard work, deep values, and conviction. Ethical banking, she says, is tough—but worth every effort. After Paola’s inspirational session, the fellows shared updates on their projects and collaborated on their plans. 🔎 Strategic Thoughts on BURU, Tekne, and SYME — Fintech Meets Defence Supply Chains As a fintech investor, I’ve been following closely how NUBURU® Inc. (BURU) is progressing toward Italian Golden Power 🇮🇹 clearance for its acquisition of TEKNE S.p.A. the Italian defence and industrial systems specialist - an important supplier to NATO and the US Army - particularly the US Forces Flyer 72 Special Forces Vechicle. Many assume Golden Power is just a tick-box national security process, but it’s deeper than that. The government will want to understand how Tekne plans to finance and deliver on its €300M+ backlog of orders, much of which sits in sensitive defence and infrastructure. That’s where Supply@ME Capital plc (SYME) could come in. SYME offers debt-free inventory monetisation — potentially a perfect fit for Tekne, enabling it to unlock working capital without taking on traditional debt. If Tekne becomes an in-house client for SYME, it would solve multiple challenges: • It would give Tekne liquidity to execute contracts swiftly. • It would remove the previous “remarketer” roadblock SYME faced with banks like BancoBPM, because Tekne can essentially manage remarketing internally. • It would provide SYME with a flagship industrial client, proving its model works at scale in the real economy. In my view, Golden Power clearance for the BURU–Tekne deal could indirectly serve as a vote of confidence in SYME’s model. It could position SYME as a tool supporting Italy’s strategic supply chains while keeping financial risks off balance sheets. While there’s no hard date announced, the deal seems to be in the later stages of review. Barring further delays, many expect clarity in the next few weeks. Bottom line: things still look very much on track.
