Friday Fun

If Star Wars was made by environmentalists. (ht Brian Ertz)

QOTD

Because it’s so unexpected yet fantastico.

As catastrophic as it would be to fail to raise our debt ceiling, it’s even more irresponsible to not take this opportunity to own up to our unsustainable spending path,” Sen. Mark Udall (Colo.), another Democrat challenging the White House, said in a statement his office released this week. “If we don’t take action to reduce our deficit spending, Congress will be facing this same debt ceiling vote in the near term – still with no end to our deficits in sight.”

See they do listen, you (we) just have to talk loud enough to be heard over the others.

Quote of the Day

David Harsanyi regarding the new “Oil and Gas Price Fraud Working Group to Focus on Energy Markets”. (Yes, it’s actually a real thing.…I thought he was joking.)

And if we can’t confront make-believe distractions with “working groups,” well, we are surely a nation in decline.

We already knew that Mr. Smiley

We already knew that this will be the “most racist” election ever.

How?

The last election centered on Obama’s inexperience and whatever could be drudged up from his past “experiences”. It included his attitudes towards others, but mostly centered on whether he inspired you or not. Still – anyone who criticized was a racist.

This coming election will center on Obama’s deeds, not just his oration. And there are a lot of deeds and a lot of lies and a lot of attitude out there. Anyone who criticizes will, once again, be labeled a racist. There is a hell of a lot more to criticize this go round hence the “most racist” election ever.

Mr. Smiley? If you think that’s alright, well – I call you a racist. Obviously you believe that the black man can not intellectually deal with criticism. That doesn’t sound very empowering to me.

Fantastic News!

One big ol hearty congratulations to Iraq as they prepare to increase oil production for sale.

Will the US benefit from the difference [in production]? If American oil companies can compete for those leases, they certainly may. But that is a decision for Iraqis, by Iraqis, which is exactly what we had in mind all along.

Good for them! And like Ed notes, this time any increase doesn’t go for a new castle for Sadaam or whatever else he may want. This time…..They’ll decide in the manner they decide.

Who Knew?

Who knew the terrorists wanted to launch more attacks?

Oh yeah – doh – George W. and the military, and the CIA and …………
Thanks again all!

Happy Easter!

And don’t worry, you can rejoice. All the cool kids are celebrating. “Huh?” You say.

Linked here is an op-ed in the LATimes concerning the concept of self deprivation and Lent, along with other religions and their practices of sacrifice.

The author gave up sugar like she does every Lenten season. She knows she’s addicted and yet can’t seem to give it up any other time of the year, for any other reason, than the spiritual. But don’t worry, she’s not one of those uncool Christians.

I’m not Catholic. I’m not even Christian.

And don’t worry – she doesn’t believe, like you do, in the white haired God sitting in the clouds.

I don’t believe in a traditional God — certainly not in a deity that sits in heaven caring whether I eat candy corn for breakfast. He/she/it would have better things to do.

It’s just that it works. By linking the sacrifice to the spiritual, she appreciates what she has and realizes what others go through and remembers to find strength from things greater than herself.

And by sacrificing something — denying myself for a period of time — I better appreciate what I usually have.

I contemplate all the good in my life, even without cupcakes. When I’m tempted, I dig down to something greater than myself, a recognition that I am insignificant, that my life is only as important as the people I leave behind. Then it seems ridiculous that I should care so much about a Snickers bar.

Is that Gandhi’s unfolding spirit? Is God with me when I turn down a friend’s home-baked cookie?

I don’t mean to trivialize the spiritual. I’m not talking about God as a diet aid, but about a force that all of us have at our disposal. When we draw on our best selves, the selves that know what is right and good, we find strength. It is right to be aware of all that we consume. It is good to think about those who are less fortunate than we are. It is liberating to put that Snickers bar in its place, however briefly

It just gives me a little Easter chuckle to watch an LATimes writer
a) come up with the strawman (Jesus and God from kindergarten Sunday school),
b) assume that she is “beyond all that” – “I, for sure are not a Christian” and then
c) recognize God and His hand anyway and work to write about it yet remain liberal “cool”.

He works in mysterious ways including raising his Son from the dead. Our sacrifices over the Lenten season help us to remember the hell Jesus was put through on earth yet recognize that he loves us anyway and loved His life here. We strive to be worthy – and yet we already are.

Happy Easter to you all! Enjoy this very pretty “Christ the Lord is Risen Today”.

Corey Gardner – CO’s Own

“Economic Analysis” that does not (or does it?) look at jobs lost or gained due to rules and Mr. Gardner trying to get that answer. Let’s just call him Pitbull Gardner….the nice kind, because he wasn’t all toney like others can be. Just enough so to show his exasperation.

What I don’t get is why the EPA guys didn’t just say “No – we did not look at jobs. Instead we were looking at specific costs to the business, not to the economy. So IF a new job was needed, it would be a cost. If a job would be lost it was not counted.”
It’s not a bad answer for what the EPA’s purpose is.

The dude needs to be ready next time.

Anyway – keep your eye on Corey Gardner.

Here’s a good idea

Let’s borrow another $25 million dollars to finance Libyans in their fight to oust the guy who we dare not declare we are working to oust. [oh wait, those dollars are for “nonlethal” aide only – whew]

David Harsanyi (ht Threesources)

The real size of government can only be measured by what D.C. spends, not by what it takes in.
