Time is running out for Ania. She needs to ask her dying father a vital question; his answer is the key to how she will lead the rest of her life. She must force him to revisit his childhood in Poland in 1944, a time when decisions about survival were made on the spur of the moment, a place where chaos undermined all previous morality. Who is her father really? Can she bear to find out?
Another secret also torments her: an incident she filed in her memory store. Now the police have found the remains of a child in Whalley Range. Should she try to find the gang of friends from her own childhood days? Or should she keep the secret of what happened then?
This coming-of-age novel is a tale of heroic survival against all odds: a life-affirming story of courage and hope set against harrowing circumstances. It celebrates the goodness that can be found in all nations.

Finding great books by unknown authors

Books sitting

When it comes to books, my mission is to find those unknown ones that contain great stories. Tales that transport the reader into another world. Stories that amaze, excite, scare, thrill, swoon and teach me all kinds of stuff I never thought of or dared to dream about.

Whether you’re a ferocious reader who consumes books by the thousands, or a casual reader who dabble in the pleasure every now and again, I think we can all agree that finding a great book is a marvelous gift. Continue reading

Some blatant self promotion?

I don’t do this often so I hope you’ll all indulge me as I do some blatant self promotion just before Christmas. If you’re looking for a cosy novel with a good dose of action, adventure, mythology and romance, don’t be shy to check out this little tale 🙂

The König is a tyrant. His subjects are starving. And all-out war is fast approaching. Will a pair of young, courageous brothers save their kingdom? When an emissary sent by the König himself stops by the remote mouse colony of Long Meadow, the peaceful life Sommer and Nesbit have shared is turned upside down-and the brothers are catapulted into separate death-defying adventures. Sommer, levelheaded and clever, is ordered to the palace to join the König’s illustrious Eagle Guard as it prepares to face a full-scale invasion by the nefarious Emperor Wolfsmilch and his army of a hundred thousand forest mice. Meanwhile, the small but spirited Nesbit is banished to the Forest of Lost Life for insulting the König, and must dodge hungry predators at every turn. The brothers struggle to reunite and defy the oppressors who threaten everyone and everything they have ever known and loved. But time is quickly running out for both of them-and the fate of the kingdom hinges on one last, daring mission. Set against the magnificent backdrop of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria, The Kingdom of the Sun and Moon is an action-packed adventure story for young readers and adults alike. Ages 10 and up

Writing Reviews: How far is too far

UntitledDuring this week I happen to stumble upon a heated argument on Goodreads. It involved a review in which the reader urges other readers not to buy a specific book with which she took ethical issue. In the review she noted she would consider anyone who buys and likes this specific book as stupid. I read the exchanges with some interest as it tapped into something I’ve been thinking about since I started writing reviews myself: How far is too far when writing reviews? Continue reading
