I think that now you would be proud
of all I have achieved
But on that day in seventy-four
I merely felt deceived
I was fifteen then and, waking rude
my sunshine went away
with suits upon the doorstep
on that dark and painful day
A long, black car, a hated suit
The deep hole in the ground
The falling ring upon the wood
That lonely, hollow sound
Bereft back then but I have lived
a life since that sad day
as two and forty years have passed
since Daddy passed away
So on this nineteenth day of second month
I’ll raise a glass to you
Recalling fifteen precious years
with the father that I knew

Radio in the early hours
heard whilst half asleep
Subliminal soft whispers
just enough to keep
Songs that come the daybreak
are still inside my head
So I’ll look them up on Youtube
and watch the video instead
Songs that paint a picture
that’ll see me through the day
helping shape life’s moments
in ways words can’t portray
Radio in the early hours
music ever there
Even when I’m half asleep
and mostly unaware

We have a birthday in our house today
it makes us feel quite old
For nine and twenty years ago
when it was pretty cold
a daughter was our first born child
in Brighton in the snow
Back in the last century
It seems so long ago
I wonder where those years have gone
they’ve happened pretty fast
Nine and twenty of them go
to history and the past
But what a joy they all have been
we’ve had joy and we’ve had tears
And adventures in the growing up
we’ve seen across the years
And now as a result of that
we really are quite blessed
to have four grown up children
and each of them the best
Birthdays are in celebration
a really joyous time
So today we’ll raise a glass to
the eldest, first in line

Train a-trundles daily
inland from the sea
cross a river, through the fields
familiar to me
A journey I know all too well
although it differs every day
as the scenery changes
when the weather has its say
Sometimes it is murky
river mist obscures the view
And on other days the sunshine
brings a squint and all’s askew
Some days it is raining
and there’s a monotone of grey
But when there’s blue sky overhead
there is colour every day
Train a-trundles through the winter
when sometimes it is white
A panoramic vista that
provides a lovely sight
And it trundles through the spring
and yes, the summer too
onward into autumn
with its red and golden hue
It doesn’t take me very long
Twenty minutes either way
but it’s regular most working weeks
though not quite every day
And the nicest thing about it
is as I’m travelling through
I can never tire of seeing
something every time anew

Sunshine in the mirror
Blue up in the sky
reflected in the water
winter hurries by
February receding
March knocks at the door
Spring is quietly waiting
to welcome us once more
Tiny green appearing
it really won’t be long
before we bid goodbye to winter
and sing the springtime song

It started with a smear of clay
all those years ago
when two hearts began to beat as one
in a college studio
I followed you, we fell in love
and found a perfect bliss
a promise made in marriage
sealed later with a kiss
Now thirty-eight years later
soulmates still us two
I hope you’ll be my valentine
as I’m still in love with you

I feel perhaps I should explain
why oft this space is filled
with stories of the ocean and
the inspiration it’s instilled
As a poet I am never short
of things to write about
for the sea is ever talking
via a whisper or a shout
And living here, so close at hand
I am constantly aware
of the inspiration on my doorstep
from the sea that’s ever there

Watching winter setting sun
on the beach from the long mile
A perfect ending to the day
I stayed there for quite a while
An ebbing tide, a lapping sea
with gold reflected there
On the long mile I breathed my thanks
for all this in a prayer

The ‘long mile’ is the colloquialism for a stretch of beach between a trapped tidal lake called ‘Widewater’ and Shoreham Beach in West Sussex, UK.

My heart on my sleeve
but most times my hand
pouring words onto paper
for posterity and
a memory to capture
one day at a time
recalled in a moment
in verse or a rhyme
These words are my birthright
as present and gift
bequeathed to myself
to raise spirits and lift
For as ink lies to paper
and my heart to my sleeve
these words will remain
should I stay or I leave
