Last day 9

9 of 12 in the ‘Last Day 23’ series

It's the last day of September
Twenty twenty-three
and the day of a new marriage
of our daughter Grace to Lee
A day of new beginnings
with our seventh family member
which each year on 30/9
us Beans will all remember
So here's a toast, the first of many
on this very special day
to Grace and Lee for happiness
to speed you on your way

The Waverley

On the world's last ocean-going paddle steamer we sailed
from Shoreham to the Isle of Wight
A day on the The Waverley starting at nine
and returning much later that night
It was the best day we could ever wish for
and we both had a wonderful time
sailing the waters of England's South Coast
on a day in September, sublime

Built in 1946, The Waverley is the world’s last ocean-going passenger-carrying paddle steamer. On 13th September 2023 we had the very great privilege of joining a daytime cruise from our home port of Shoreham-by-Sea to the Isle of Wight and then on to Southampton.

Grace the rockstar

So, the Brighton Triathlon which Grace has now done
Swimming and cycling and then a long run
In the heat on a Sunday under the sun
she's a rockstar, totally true

And then to the Wick for something to eat
with a beer for the cooling here in the heat
as we need to celebrate Grace's great feat
Cos she's a rockstar, totally true

Jack’s boat

Moving slowly along under power we saw
Jack's sailing boat just off the coast
Watched as he motored closer to shore
making like us here, the most

Weighed anchor out there so I pinged him a poke
PM'd him to wish him good day
Took a pic of the boat and sent it out there
as it seemed the right thing to say

The pride of September

Ah, the beach hut, lovely place
warm sunshine there in my face
no hint of breeze, well - just a trace
September does us proud

Just back in August we were bereft
as from July the summer left
but now it's back with hand of deft
September does us proud

And now we're back here at the beach
not far from home, in easy reach
a thing or two to August teach
September does us proud

Back

And this is heaven, thirty plus
Here in September, all the fuss
of August that abandoned us
when summer wasn't here

The sunshine's hot just overhead
and I am basking here instead
with no bad weather coming dread
now summer's clearly here

It sings

At the sunset of a summer day
fronds of fading capture light
and low to ground whilst looking up
all this I favour in my sight

Analogy of life lived long
as autumn's season now begins
and with the glow of setting sun
with fading fronds my heart it sings

Still summer

In mid-September evening came
the daytime burnt away
emblazoned in a Western sky
the embers of the day

A testament that summer
wasn't done or finished yet
evidenced by what we'd seen
or what we'd get to get

Of rust and gold (revisited) again

Concluding the ‘A life worth living’ series (12 of 12)

And to these days
when all I hold
is flecked with rust
or painted gold
I know which of
these I prefer
So to the gold
I will defer

The rust it takes
a second place
Resting with
its fall from grace
Yet not forgotten
all these things
as each have given
cause to sing

Rust can be changed
Re-vigour gleaned
to witness gold
with surface cleaned
So of the gold
and of the rust
to each I cling
as each I trust

Went for a walk (slight return)

11 of 12 in the ‘A life worth living’ series

Went for a walk
down by the sea
Near to the waves
as they sang to me

Went for a walk
up on Sussex hill
Near to the Downs
a longing to fill

Went for a walk
along river’s bank
always a thrill
to be perfectly frank

Went for a walk
just down the road
and thought of this rhyme
there as a I strode

Went for a walk
through life as you do
This analogy right
for me through and through
