Flew into Dubrovnik
Walked round the city wall
It really was quite beautiful
with plenty to enthral
The views of Adriatic
seas with islands in the bay
was really quite breathtaking
and spectacular I’d say
Games of Thrones was filmed here
Kings Landing by the sea
And it gave a special way to start
the cruise for Sal and me

This time last year
our bags were packed
and excitement it was growing
as we both knew
what we would do
and where we both were going
To somewhere hot
across the sea
four hours or so by plane
with nought to lose
to join a cruise
Croatia again
This time last year
the sunshine found
when autumn chill was here
First thing we did
with nothing hid
was drinking ice-cold beer
In somewhere hot
across the sea
escaping for a week
remembering
as our hearts sing
these memories to keep

Sitting on deck six
with Split across the way
Picturing all the things
that have made this holiday
It has been all we hoped for
and though we fly home on the morrow
It is with happiness we’re leaving
and not one tinged with sorrow
For we’ve criss-crossed the Adriatic
seen sunshine and some rain
Visited new places and
been back to some again
We’re just a little browner
than we were a week ago
which judging by the time of year
is quite nice to have on show
And we’ve memories a-plenty
captured by the things we’ve seen
and the very many lovely
places this past week we’ve been
So now with quiet reflection
as the ship prepares to sail
returning to Dubrovnik
all these things here I regale
Split, this lovely city
perfect Swansong to this time
so I’ll end this little series
with that thought upon this line

Mario on his tricycle
caught us with his grin
Charmed us so much that we
agreed to go with him
Took us up through Marjan Park
round the headland of the bay
Showed us lots of things that
we’d have never seen today
The peace up in the forest
with pine fragrance in the air
was absolutely lovely
so we’re pleased he took us there
Showed us castles built into the rock
high up above the trees
as we caught glimpses here and there
of peaceful flat-calm seas
Then via Kasjuni beaches
Mario brought us back around
safely on his tricycle
to the walls of the old town
And shaking hands we parted
Split company you could say

In Rijeka in the market
whilst making little fuss
a lovely lady sold us socks
hand-knitted just for us
Yellow painted buildings
suggested that this city
once held a lot more grandeur
now faded more’s the pity
Still, we had a little walkabout
soaked up the local flair
celebrating somewhere different
and simply being there

Hoorah for Hvar
so pleased that we came
for it was hotter today that we’d hoped
But walking quite slow
with iced beers on the go
somehow we managed and coped
Hoorah for Hvar
it has been a blast
one more perfect day for us now
This holiday break
seems settled to make
for great times with hot sun on the brow

Climbed up to the castle
overlooking Hvar bay
The views we saw when up there
quite spectacular I’d say
Cool olive trees and standing stones
with cairns on every wall
Balanced and precarious
those standing, still to fall
So I built one there for memory
for those we’ve lost this year
A cairn for Mum and Moira
both loved and very dear
Hvar a very special place
long island in the sun
close to the Dalmation coast
to you I’m pleased we’ve come

A really fitting ending
to what has been a perfect day
and as golden sun sinks in the west
Dubrovnik has its say
We wandered ‘neath the city walls
enjoying lovely heat
had cold beers and lovely
giant ice-creams in the street
We discovered lovely places
we had not found before
and took photos to remember
all the wonders that we saw
Then back on board the Celebration
we sat and watched the view
as the sunset cast a golden glow
and happiness we knew

We’re off to find the summer
for a little while at least
and from now til mid-November
all working has now ceased
Yet we shiver in our shirtsleeves
beneath cold English skies
before towards the summer
our big jet plane it flies
Dubrovnik in Croatia
awaits us basking in the sun

with eight more days to come

To Korcula by tender
Inside the city wall
I climbed the tower of St Marks
some thirty metres tall
The view across the rooftops
full of terracotta red
took my breath away, although
the drop filled me with dread
But I made it back down safely
to walk streets of ancient stone
on this island in Croatia
