The Corinth Canal connects the the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland. Construction started in 1881 and completed in 1893. Four miles long but only 70ft wide at its base, it’s used mainly now for small craft and pleasure trips. Still impressive though.

But there for two millennia
plus five hundred give or take
it’s looking pretty marvellous
for its age make no mistake
And it was high up on our bucket list
until we visited to see
the grandeur of its marbled walls
my soulmate, Sal and me
Greece is I’d say a favourite
as this series has to show
for several ticks its taken
from the list I’ll have you know
Corfu and three fortresses
to complete our holiday
The sea one and the land one
in the old town on the bay
And then through cobbled streets
to the new one on the wall
(The amount of steps I’ve climbed today
I’d rather not recall)
But the climbs were really worth it
as, rewarded with a view
Such as to take your breath away
‘neath Aegean skies of blue
The sunrise in Corfu
was the best I’d seen so far
And with sunlight on the water
it was quite spectacular
Islands in the bay provided
context for the scene
A rather perfect ending

Argostoli (Greek: Αργοστόλι) is a town and a former municipality on the island of Kefalonia, Ionian Islands, Greece. Turtles swim freely in the Koutavos lagoon in the bay, although on 17th August this year (much to our pleasure), most of them seemed to be out in the bay itself.

across the azure seas
A force five blowing from the east
feels like a summer breeze
Kefalonia looming
on the horizon through the haze
For a seven-hour stopover
on the last but one of days
And it really is quite magical
here up at the prow
Watching our approach to land
so quiet and peaceful now
