ABC, not so easy as 1…2…3…

I Found the ABC’s project challenging not in the act of shooting or editing but in fact finding all the letters.  Particularly “N” I could not locate that bugger anywhere.  Anyway this project does force you to think a little differently and a little outside of the box, and forces you to crops the world into small areas in order to create things that we so commonly recognize.JHSlough, jerry-slough, ABC, letters-1

HDR Expirement

HDR Photography is a technique that fascinates me and infuriates me.  I believe overall i need more practice with it but so far nothing I have done feels stunning.  This set was no different.  My favorites are probably the arches and the fountain, but still for me they are left wanting.  I do like the range of light to dark detail you can achieve, and i even enjoy the distortions that can happen creating the more dreamlike landscapes, but for me the images are just not strong enough.

Studio Portraits

I have always been a great fan or portraits, I enjoy creating them and i enjoy being in the studio to create portraits.  This was a new experience with half the class being in the studio at the same time, and also not setting up my own lighting was new experience for me, although I would not have chosen the particular lights that were used it is only my personal preference for that, also I do realize that with that many photographers and subjects in the studio large light sources are preferable.

The Orton Effect

Looking through some photography pages I frequent recently I sort of stumbled on an effect in photography that I had not come by before.  This technique originally developed in the days of film is so called the Orten Effect named for famed nature photographer Michael Orton.  Orton would shoot using slide flim two over exposed images one out of focus and one in perfect detail, then combining these slides together would make a print with hazy dream like results.  The images on Michael Orton’s sight are stunning and intriguing, i thought i would give it a try.  Using the internet as my starting point I searched for some tips and tutorials to create this effect and found a few, i feel like i need some practice to develop this fully and creating better results, i also feel that i need much lighter images, the techniques online generally lead to creating a lighter layer but still i think they need to be a little lighter than the methods provided in order to produce good results.

Vineyard Panorama

Panoramas are actually something I have dealt with very little in my years in photography.  I have done this work a few times but overall I am not a landscape photographer and pano shots tend to be synonymous with landscape.  Having said that all of my shots this time are landscapes.  Taken late afternoon at Orfilia Winery in Escondido, Ca.  I attempted to do some other work with panos that i was not as successful with but i plan on going back and attempting again.  I am actually quite happy with these images looking from their park outside of the tasting room over the now wilting grapevines, picked free of their fruit waiting for winter.  In San Diego it will not be long before these vines have dropped this years leaves, and begin the winter hibernation.  In San Diego that hibernation is brief and before long they will be in full bloom again, ready to create the next vintage.  These were photographed on or near the “golden hour” in early fall.

On the work i discovered that this can be overdone a little and will begin to confuse photoshop after a point.  Ensure there are obvious points that the software can line up to create the panorama.  I wanted to do a panorama of a wall they had at the winery but so far have been unsuccessful in creating the panorama itself.
