Cyanotype: New Sensitized Paper

So as I said before I was going to coat new papers and coat them lighter.  I am much happier with these results.  I finally got back to paper white.  Strangely enough these are actually taking a longer to expose to get into a good contrast.  Overall I am much happier with these out comes.  I took the time to make duplicates and make darker printsin order to try and coffee tone again.

Elfin Forrest: In Curiosity

For the post I am going to break it up a bit.  After spending some more time at The Elfin Forrest Reserve in Escondido I Went back to embracing the painterly thoughts ( Thank you Art Wolf).  Any way I did some work with HDR Images and truly one of the first times I feel good about them, Using a combination of Lr and Nik the images came out well.

I also post edited them a little farther, being in the area nothing feels quite real there to me.  Elfin foreest is almost to quite and every thing is a touch… well off.  Almost as if the whole area is a fantasy or a dream.

Elfin forrest is a great place for hiking and walking and I always enjoy my trips there and really should make the short trek more often.  I think My favorite of this set is probably the dark Oak tree, all though the roots are nice too.

For the Second set of images i decided to embrace the lens zoom techniques some photographers use to create representation images.  I Shot several of these more than I normally wood trying to create a painterly type image.  Also I use a long exposure and a pin hole body cap on the Image of the stream and rocks to create a similar feel.

The lens zoom images all though I like the idea of the technique i usually find my images lacking, this time i feel some of them are truly out of bounds good.

Cyanotypes: Hand Coated

So this is my first work with self coated paper.  I am happy with the results it took some work you can tell by the number of prints on the same image i had to go through and work on the negatives a little.

My plan is to make more this weekend.  I am looking around 2 minute exposures in the southern California sun.  The prints seem to be quite dark though and also rather dense I feel like i may have over coated the paper.  Well next paper I coat will be thinner.

Double Peaks Park

Another trip to Double Peaks Park in San Marcos, Ca. I truly love to shoot here, and have gone to this place multiple times in recent years.  Today I came with Art Wolf and Robert Adams in mind.  Specifically I was thinking of painting inspired frames.

As I stated in a previous post I started in art as a painter inspired mainly by impressionist and surrealists, so I decided to follow these previous inspirations on this outing.  So through a combination of of different camera techniques and post processing I attempted to come up with some more painterly works.

I also tried working with some more traditional photographic type images.  The tree at the top of the park is a gem in my world.  I really appreciate the aesthetic of trees and this to me is just an amazing specimen.

I also tried to concentrate on the play of light in shadow on the geometric steps of the amphitheater there.  The combination of deep shadows and bright highlights, as well as a good angle of light made for interesting texture as well.

Finally using the natural golden hour light a few portraits were created.  Portraiture is where I started working in photography and still enjoy shooting portraits.  I think these came out well.

A Shoot with the Penny Stinkers

Not a whole lot to say about this shoot.  Working with my fathers band “The Penny Stinkers,” for some promotional work.  A could we day shortly after Christmas in Bellingham, Wa.  The group wanted a vintage look to their photos so rather than reinventing the wheel I went with the Nik Analog, Color, and Silver effects pro programs.  Included are the original images with Lightroom edits, and then the Nik Edits.

#Help!

In my head I am working on a new project.  Earlier this month two mass shootings happened in the same day in the united states.  One of these happened very close to the place a grew up.

This has been happening with astonishing regularity in our country this year, and it has got me thinking about my youth.  You see the violence that happened at Columbine was the first mass shooting incident I clearly remember.  My senior year in high school it happened on the designated senior ditch day.  I was with a god friend of mine listening to music when this incident broke news.  The most astonishing thing that has occurred to me since 1999 is that absolutely nothing has changed.

I made this video in response to the violence that has happened in 2015 but also in response to the violence that has happened since 1999, these incidents have continued to happen with increasing frequency since 1999, and yet nothing in our society changes.

so I present #help!

Cycles Day 70

The 10 week mark…Still stagnant, not a whole lot of change in either jar at this point, and if anything the plants are looking slightly weaker again.  I made the decision to leave them in the growing jar for another week for two reasons.  I am hoping that next week they will appear stronger again and in order to get a good layout on the grid part of the project.  I did not like the grid that came out this week.

Again these jars appear to be reflective of life for me.  Existing in some sort of strange holding pattern with minor movements forward, but no complete collapse at the same time.  No leaps and bounds of change.  Maybe the transplant see big change is what they need to move forward.  Or maybe it will be the death of them.

Cycles Day 56

11/11/2015

So I am honestly not behind on the project I have stuck to my days for the photographs, wordpress was stuck on posting everything I did as a page so I kinda gave up until today.

11/8/2015

So we have neared the two month point…

The compost jar is some what in a stagnant place though things continue to change it is less and less notable.  The compost is dark and rich and very moist, i truly think that mixed with soil it would begin to be a great growing platform.  The growth jar has run into an issue some of the plants are some what unhealthy, they are wilted and yellow and growth has slowed.  The the plants that seem the strongest are still climbing out of the top.  I am not sure what is going on here but over the last week the weather has changed rapidly in San Diego, so the much cooler nights may be partly to blame, also the water requirement of my friends seems to have increased I am noticing the soil being dried out much quicker than before, and even the typically reserved water in the bottom of the jar is gone.

So what is my plan, I am going to move the jars inside during the evenings hopefully keeping them warmer and take them out during the still warm days.  Secondly I am going to increase the amount of water I am giving the friends.  Hopefully that will help in getting them to grow a little stronger again.  Hopefully if the are strong next week I can consider moving them to a new vessel and starting this one again.

The struggle of the plants actually makes me think about life again, and in some ways reflect upon things in myself.  Some times people just need a little more warmth, and TLC.  Perhaps it is a analogy for not taking care of our selves well enough, or needing the kindness an compassion of others to continue to thrive and grow.

Cycles Day 35

Cycles is continuing to move along, though the growth rate has slowed some the basil is begging to peak out of the top of the jar I opened.  I believe our recent fluctuant weather in San Diego to be prt of the culprit, it has alternated between blazing hot and wet and chilly here over that last week.  Given that the plants are no longer existing completely in their little enviroment this is probably affecting them somewhat.

In the Compost Jar much of the items placed with in are barely recognizable any more.  I actually am thinking it may be getting close to time to attempt to plant in this jar, when opened the smell of soil is rich and vibrant, You can still smell the citrus peels that were placed in with the pile at the beginning but recognizing these things is difficult, some of the more dense yard waste is still recognizable and there are still a few bright green leaves.

I believe the transplants side project has given up, and this makes me a little sad. I did not want my little friends to die, but even with good thoughts, talking to them and plenty of sun and water they have not thrived.  I could not bring myself to photograph them today, but i plan on it in the near future, its just hard to photograph essentially a death mask.  I guess the failure of this part of the project speaks back to the original intent of the project though, not every cycle in life grows to its full potential, and at times some times things get in the way and end that arch of life.

This also brings me to wonder what am i to do with the growth jar, it seems that things are getting dense in there and there is more growth than i expected even though very few of the chives that were planted are visible.  But the shallow amount of soil in the jar, and the number of plants growing i know at some point if I want these plants to thrive im going to need to get them out of the jar. I would rather not pull them free of the soil like the few i attempted to move in the Transplant side project.  I believe my best option is to separate the soil pack into 1/4’s and attempt to remove them that way.
