But I want THAT School!

The coming of school age brings parents nightmares. Here’s the post from the Head’s Office you might find interesting!

Choosing the school your child will attend is one of the most important things a parent can do. It can be the place where life-time friendships are formed, where confidence is gained and sadly where self esteem can be destroyed. For first time parents, the whole process of deciding where your child is going to go for the next 7 years that will constitute their primary education can be daunting. Even when that hurdle has been jumped, you then have ‘big’ school choices to contend with and that can be even more terrifying.

Ead-You-K-Shun!

This week’s Gallery over at Tara Cain’s blog ‘Sticky Fingers’ should have been easy for me having been a teacher. It is ‘Education’ but for some reasons I found it really difficult. I suppose that is often the case when it is your ‘work’. Anyway, I trawled through the albums (well no I flicked through the digital pictures!) & found these beauties.

If anything says ‘EDUCATION’ it has to be a Victorian classroom! Just look at the equipment! Who needs technology & gadgets. Everyone has their own seat & writing slate. The abacus is there to help with arithmetic & of course should you step out of line, the cane will remind you of your manners!

The next one brings the past to the present for me. Even back in those days attendance was crucial! Rather than a little certificate, the class got real recognition!

The pictures were taken at Shugborough Hall Home of the Litchfield family (as in Lord Litchfield royal photographer!) The National Trust owns part of the estate & it is well worth a visit with the children as there is plenty for everyone to see & enjoy!

Now pop over to Tara’s & get more educated!

The Match – 100 word challenge

This piece has been inspired by a post from Nickie O’Hara  ‘Where Are the Words? in which she bemoans the apparent  lack of creative writing on the blogosphere recently. I can hold my hand up to really only joining memes mainly supported by photographs. I could use the excuse of time with my other blog (The Heads Office) & life but they would be excuses rather than valid reasons. I don’t know whether she intended to kick-start creative writing but she followed that post up with ‘100 Words – the Beginning’ & produced a piece of 100 words.

Some of you may know that through THO, I comment on lots of class blogs in the hope of encouraging children to write for a wider audience. One such class is 6E  at Werrington Primary School, in Peterborough. The class teacher Jamie Efford has set the children a challenge for the holidays of writing apiece of 100 words only. He has made it a little more difficult by giving the children 15 words that must be included. Do pop over & see their blog & their 100 word pieces (6E 100 Word Challenge)

In the meantime, here is my effort. It’s not terribly creative but I was thinking more closely of the words I was using. As Nickie says, it’s a beginning!

It was dank February afternoon. One of those afternoons where straight hair frizzes & your nose seems to constantly run even though you don’t have a cold & there’s that fine line of moisture on your top lip.

Although only mid afternoon, the floodlights were ablaze, proudly standing out in the murk of the sky to provide light for the skills that would soon be exhibited below them.

There was a quiet air of community as supporters greeted each other & settled down to what they hoped would be a feast of a match.

Suddenly all rise & roar!

Blue Balloons!

Our Alphabe Rainbow Summer School has reached the colour BLUE this week. Although I have posted this before here, it is such a brilliant BLUE picture.

Before I retired I was lucky enough to amalgamate two schools into a primary school. To celebrate the opening, we gave each of the 350 children a balloon which on the ring of my old school bell they released into the sky. It was a brilliant sight. Luckily, no-one noticed that the name of the school printed on then had a letter ‘S’ on the end!

New teacher!

That cheeky lady, Jenny Matlock has put a slant on Saturday Centus this week. Instead of a prompt, we have been given a title. As usual we can only use 100 words! When you have read mine, do pop over to her blog  & see the other entries!

What I did over my summer vacation

As a newly qualified teacher, I have spent most of my holiday in my new classroom getting it ready. Most of the walls now have bright displays. Each drawer has a label on it either a child’s name or what the contents are.  I want the children to feel pleased to be in my class so I have put little cartoon figures by their names on their work books.

I just need to sort out an activity for the first day.

I want to get to know them so – they can write about what I did over my summer vacation!
