New kiwi on the block!

This is not an advert for Tescos although I do owe them a thank you.

Hubby and I often go to our local store on a Saturday. We have a cup of coffee, talk about our goodies for the week-end and have a leisurely amble around. We do our big weekly shop in another Tesco store (long story and for another post!). It means that at the week-end we approach those folks giving samples with more time and interest.

This morning there was a stand in the fruit department offering a taste of kiwi fruits. We are fans but I find that they are quite difficult to eat as I don’t like the skin and find removing it or trying to scoop the fruit out a bit of a pain. Well, today we were introduced to YELLOW kiwis. They are  slightly sweeter than their green cousins and the flesh is softer. As we bought some, the lady (it is usually ladies doing sampling isn’t it?)  gave us two amazing looking implements! They are spoons that cut round and scoop out.

Very ingenious! The fruit was delicious and even though we used our gifts, we needed to have a wash after eating them because they were very juicy! I’m sure children would love them.

Have you seen and tried these new additions to the fruit bowl?

The Eat Happy Project

The other day when I was doing my shopping in Tesco, I came across a group of primary children being encouraged to taste herbs. They were then moved along to bananas and later I could hear the assistant talking about potatoes!

I was intrigued and noticed ‘Farm to Fork Trail’ on the back of one of the high-vis tops the children were wearing so when I got home I did a bit of research. It turns out that Tesco have been quietly (well I’ve not heard about it!) running The Eat Happy Project. It’s aims are to make sure the next generation has a ‘healthier, happier relationship’ with food based experiencing where it comes from, how to cook it and how to make good decisions about eating.

Now that the school summer holidays are here they are running:

  • Cooking classes for 5-13 (split into 3 groups) see HERE for availability
  • Parent and Child Farm to Fork Trails – just ask in your local store

Once schools go back (I know you don’t want to think about it!) they can sign up for:

  • Farm to Fork Trails – in local stores
  • Farm to Fork Trails that visit local farms. Help can be provided towards transport costs
  • Online Field Trips – broadcast live from farms and factories across the globe, children can see behind the scenes to discover where the food on their food comes from, and chat to real growers and producers using Google+ Hangouts

I am told that there are lots of ideas and events in the pipeline for this project so do get involved. This is not a sponsored post. I just think it is a fabulous idea that needs lots of exposure to get as many families and children involved as possible!

It’s in the smile!

Now when Tara over at Sticky Fingers set the theme of ‘Happy’ for today’s Gallery, she did say that we could take it in any direction.

Well, you know me Dear Reader – always up for something a little different. I had decided what I was going to share with you when I saw these!

The lady in Tesco’s was most insistent that I included the banana as she felt they got left out!

My choice of a smile, which of course tells the outside world that you are happy, comes from a chap in Le Puy en Valey which is South East France in the Auvergne region.

I think he is marvellous. After all he has been up a wall for many years!!

Tesco and the Army!

Seen on Sunday at our local Tescos -two army personal in full camouflage uniform, berets at the required angle and both looking very smart.

I caught up with them at the check-out and my eye was drawn to their purchases. There were seven or eight of these ( apparently greatly reduced in price)

and four tins of boot polish. The chairs are in good army colours so will not look out of place in those tents. They are easy to carry on manoeuvres and even have a holder for a mug of tea. Perhaps these were some of the considerations of the female soldiers buying them!

I’m not sure if Tesco’s are on the official suppliers list for the British Army but at least these troops will look smart when they are sitting down!

Last Week I Learnt That…#24

  • We are never satisfied. We have waited and waited for the proper winter to come. I have written about it several times in these weekly meanderings and yet as soon as it gets cold and snow appears we go to pieces! I just couldn’t seem to get warm but I’m sure that has more to do with my mind saying ‘it shouldn’t be this cold’. If it had happened in December my mental state would have been ready I reckon. *pass another blanket*
  • Some bodily functions are nice. No, don’t worry-  it is safe to read on! I’m talking about sneezing. I’ve had a head cold for a couple of weeks now but this week I had a day of constant sneezing and it was wonderful. I have ended up looking like Rudolph but my head is clear. Now if we were to talk about hiccuping …..
  • It is frustrating when folks don’t keep appointments. Well in a way they did but they left after a few minutes when I need an hour. They had to go somewhere else obviously more important but we had made an appointment (it was business not pleasure) and I had some important things to ask, discuss and get action on. The delay now means that certain dead lines have passed. More importantly, it is the precedent that seems to have been set. I am giving up my ‘volunteer time’ to support a school but it does not seem to have enough importance to actually make a difference. Makes me cross and sad.
  • My son’s humour makes me smile! (Text conversation)                                           Me: Is it snowing yet?                                                                                                  Son: No but they are 7 deep in the queue at Tescos. It’s like the blitz!
  • I must trust my instincts more. My birthday present from my son is tea at the Ritz later this month! It is a whole experience and requires you to dress suitably meaning the men have to wear jackets and ties. Hubby had a suit for our son’s wedding last year but has lost so much weight he needed a new jacket. That was bought with no problem but on reviewing his wardrobe we decided that a new tie was also in order. As the jacket had been bought in a high street store he decided that there was no need to take it with us for matching purposes as we would see it in the shop. Result – neither of us could remember what it looked like so we have to go in again, this time with the blasted thing!

So, have you had a sudden cold draught hit you this week? Do you forget how good your instincts are? Do share!

Meet Scoop!

A very fine cat I’m sure you’ll agree. I’m not sure where his name came from other than you just want to ‘scoop him up’ for a cuddle. As you can see he’s a very grand cat but don’t let looks deceive you!

As you can see in this slideshow, he can be extremely silly & not grand at all!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

He belongs to my DS & DiL & really ‘owns’ the house. He did come to visit once but it wasn’t very successful. They were concerned to let him out in our garden as there are a number of cats around. He managed to ‘cross his legs’ for 3 days (poor thing) but I have still got a few pulls on my carpets where he was clearly trying to take his mind off things!

He may be going a longer holiday soon. HIS house is being sold & it is likely that he will have to move in with his other ‘grandma’ for a few months. He certainly won’t be able to wait that long so plans are being made for him to go for walks each day until he gets used to his surroundings. Obviously the children will need to make sure that he is safe & will take out some insurance for him. Pet insurance is quite a new idea to me but then again I haven’t owned a pet for a long time. Life is very much more dangerous for our furry friends now so it is sensible to make sure you will not have to face huge vets bills should anything happen.

As for Scoop, he’s getting ready to go on his trip!
