FRIENDSHIP

FRIENDSHIP

Let those be thy choicest companions who have made Christ their chief companion.”
Thomas Brooks

He is your friend who pushes you nearer to God.
Abraham Kuyper

By friendship you mean the greatest love, the greatest usefulness, the most open communication, the noblest sufferings, the severest truth, the heartiest counsel, and the greatest union of minds of which brave men and women are capable
Jeremy Taylor

He that forgets his friend is ungrateful to him; but he that forgets his Saviour is unmerciful to himself.
John Bunyan

I am convinced, by the way, that friendships provide the most fertile soil for evangelism. When the reality of Christ is introduced into a relationship of love and trust that has already been established, the effect is powerful. And it seems that invariably, when someone becomes a true follower of Christ, that person’s first impulse is to want to find a friend and introduce that friend to Christ.
John MacArthur

The dearest friend on earth is a mere shadow compared to Jesus Christ.
Oswald Chambers

Show me a man’s books and show me a man’s companions–and I will tell you what sort of a man he is.
William Tiptaft

Love is friendship set on fire.
Jeremy Taylor

No man can be called friendless who has God and the companionship of good books.
E B Browning

Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labour. For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

A man that hath friends must show himself friendly:
and there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother.
Proverbs 18:24

Christ Jesus is that FRIEND (of Sinners) that stays closer than a brother.

Making Christ known.

Making Christ known.

Christians are called to be Ambassadors for Christ, to Live, Preach, Share, Make Known the Gospel to all.

More over we are to earnestly contend for the Faith which was once delivered unto the Saints. If you don’t know what the Bible teaches how can you do these things ?

Error abounds today as it has always done,

Have we equipped ourselves ?

Have we a firm grasp upon the doctrines within the Word ?

Have we protected ourselves from being led astray by every peddler of false doctrine ?

Do we know how to answer every man that asks us the reason of the hope that we have ?

We will not have every answer immediately to hand but do we know where to point the serious, the gainsayer, and the heretic ?

We are servants of the Most High GOD who have been given talents and told to occupy until HE comes and who will be called to give account.

How will you or I feel if the verse below is true of us on any day….. but especially on that day when we meet our Saviour face to face ?

“Then they said one to another, We do not well: this day is a day of good tidings, and we hold our peace: if we tarry till the morning light, some mischief will come upon us: now therefore come, that we may go and tell the king’s household.” 2 Kings 7:9

Rather may this be true of us! ……..

For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.  1 Thess. 1:8

Now thanks be unto God, which always causes us to triumph in Christ, and makes manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

2 Cor. 2:14

Be prepared, be ready, be enthusiastic, go and make Christ Jesus known!

The disciples “turned the world upside down”

Why do the vast amount of true Christians (not false professors) have so little effect today ?

God does not change.

A WELCOME DEAFNESS AND BLINDNESS

A WELCOME DEAFNESS AND BLINDNESS

Neither give place to the devil. Eph. 4:27

As Christians it is possible to give place to the devil. It is possible to be overcome for  a season, to give way to the old man instead of putting on the new man which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Pride goes before a fall, so let him that thinks he stands take heed in case he falls, for it is possible to be tossed to and fro, and carried away with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.

Even more so, when the devil turns his immediate attention to us, to undermine us and attempt to bring us down, all be it, by the permission of God and with the limitations of the Father.

We are in a spiritual warfare and while we often fight against the flesh and members of our own household, we also wrestle against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

You need a deafness in your life, let your ears be deaf to the devil, do not give any opportunity, occasion, scope, or room for the devil, do not yield to him, resist him with everything within you, resist unto the shedding of your blood.

Be willing to give your very life not to be overcome by the devil, do not to listen to him, do not heed his suggestions, do not give in to his influences, do not let the devil get a foothold in your mind or heart, let not Satan take possession of your mind or move your heart to disobey.

You need a blindness in your life, a blindness to all that the devil would set before your eyes, and he will try to use this means to overcome you, stimulating  the lust of the eyes, the inordinate desires for what you see,  greed for the material things, the love of money,  the desire to have power, influence, to be well thought of and popular in the wrong circles.

All these things and more will he set before your physical eyes and ears, the eyes of your understanding, and the deep desires of your heart, be blind to them, set your affections on things above, desire spiritual things, desire spiritual growth, desire the fruit of Spirit above all other things.

The devil can be very subtle, he tries to appear as an angel light, to deceive and to destroy. He tries every means, fair and foul. He uses our nearest and dearest, he delights in lies, he is the father of lies, he uses half truths, misrepresentations, insinuations, and all deviousness.

He will exploit all weakness in character, in thought processes, in understanding, in affections, any weakness he can find. He uses a full frontal attack and he comes in an indirect way, by a circuitous route to achieve his abominable purposes and undermine our faith.

To be forewarned is to be forearmed, to be aware makes it possible to be prepared.

We should be both forearmed and prepared;  not letting Satan get an advantage over us, we should not be ignorant of his devices.

To be conscious of the sins that so easily overcome us, helps us to be able stand against the wiles of the devil and to be able stand in the evil day. To be aware of the sins of youth, the  sins of the middle years, and the sins of old age make it possible for us to be prepared and armed for the battle.

Think not that the battle is ever ended or won, we face our foe till the end of our days, but with the knowledge, that to each one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ and  strength sufficient for each day.

Bear in mind that although the devil is powerful he is a defeated foe, defeated by Christ on the Cross of Calvary and in Christ we shall be victorious, we shall overcome if we faint not, those that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

So be not ignorant of his devices, know the wiles of the devil, be ready, be prepared, put on the whole armour of God for your protection, so that in the evil day, you may stand your ground, and having faced all, remain standing.

Stand firm then, with the belt of truth around your waist, wearing the breastplate of righteousness, with your feet prepared with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.  Taking also the shield of faith to extinguish all the devil’s  flaming arrows; with the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.  Praying always in the Spirit  with every kind of prayer and supplication and be alert praying for all the Lord’s people with perseverance for  the spiritual warfare that we are ALL called to who love the Lord and who are the children of God.

Is there a welcome Deafness and Blindness,         yes there is.

Be deaf and blind to the devil and all his lies, neither give place to the devil. Eph 4:27

REJECTION

 REJECTION

At some point in our lives all of us have felt rejected in some degree or other.
Some people feel rejected with a real reason for it. Some people feel rejected all the time, mostly, without justification.

When feeling rejected we need to make a very honest evaluation of why we feel this way.

We need to examine ourselves firstly, being honest if we are responsible for the situation and quickly making  amends, putting the situation right, if we can. Secondly, if we find the responsibility belongs elsewhere, to someone else, we need to be kind, compassionate, and forgiving, and again, make moves towards reconciliation. Thirdly, if we find there is no basis for feeling this way we should speak forcibly to ourselves and reject these feelings.

When thinking about rejection, to be sure, almost certainly, we have to admit, we have rejected others or caused them to feel rejection, because of our attitudes. We may be totally unaware that we have done this, but, if and when it is made known to us, we need to take immediate steps to remedy the situation. The worse thing for us is to have caused rejection and never to be aware of it, for then there is no possibility of reconciliation.

When considering our relationship with God it is absolutely certain that we are responsible for the separation between us and God.

Behold your sins have made a separation between you and your God and your sins have hid His face from you, that he will not hear. Isaiah 59:2.

The worse thing for us is, having caused this separation, this barrier, the worse thing for us, is to be unaware of it. Many do not consider  their relationship to God, see no fault in themselves concerning it, and have no desire for a  relationship with God, so never seek reconciliation. This is the worst situation to be in because they will always be separated from God.

Some readily acknowledge there is a problem between themselves and God, so make every effort to put the situation right. They fail miserably because it is not possible for us to make amendment for our sins when dealing with God. Some struggle for years to resolve this problem by themselves, but always fail, so come to a place of despair or give up. This is a bad situation to be in as there never will be a reconciliation on this basis.

The best situation to be in, is to realise that there is a problem in our relationship with God, and seek a reconciliation with God, while admitting our total inability to make any restitution for sin.

God is well aware that there is a problem and from our point of view, an insurmountable problem. He knows the responsibility lies with us, He knows our inability to put things right, and yet He desires a reconciliation with us.

God is Kind, Compassionate and Forgiving, so desires a reconciliation, but He cannot simply overlook our sins and iniquities. That would offend His Holiness and Justice, there must be grounds, a justification for Him to forgive and restore a right relationship between ourselves and Himself.

Because He knows our inability He has acted to remedy this situation. He has reached out in Love and Compassion towards us. He has provided a way of Justification and Reconciliation, but this has been at great cost to Himself.
You see He sent His only Son to seek and to save those that are lost, indeed those who are dead in trespasses and sins, who have no strength to move towards God. His Son took their place and bare in His body their sins on the tree at Calvary. He took their punishment and opened a door for Reconciliation so that God could be just and the justifier of him that believes in Jesus.*

To have a right relationship with God you need Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, to believe in His (Jesus’) righteousness for the remission of sins, and the restoration of that right relationship with the Father.

God the Father has reached out, desiring reconciliation with us, having made the way possible through the death of His Son Jesus Christ, will you respond to His gracious offer of Mercy and Reconciliation ?

* Romans 3:21-26

But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

RECENTLY READ AND RIPE FOR CONTEMPLATION

RECENTLY READ AND RIPE FOR CONTEMPLATION

COUNTING THE COST

If any reader of this paper really feels that he has counted the cost, and taken up the cross, I bid him persevere and press on. I dare say you often feel your heart faint, and are sorely tempted to give up in despair. Your enemies seem so many, your besetting sins so strong, your friends so few, the way so steep and narrow, you hardly know what to do. But still I say, persevere and press on.

The time is very short. A few more years of watching and praying, a few more tossing’s on the sea of this world, a few more deaths and changes, a few more winters and summers, and all will be over. We shall have fought our last battle, and shall need to fight no more.

The presence and company of Christ will make amends for all we suffer here below. When we see as we have been seen, and look back on the journey of life, we shall wonder at our own faintness of heart. We shall marvel that we made so much of our cross, and thought so little of our crown. We shall marvel that in “counting the cost” we could ever doubt on which side the balance of profit lay. Let us take courage.

We are not far from home. It may cost much to be a true Christian and a  consistent believer; but it pays.

J C RYLE   (Holiness page 81/82 James Clark & Co. Edition 1956)

FOOD OF LOVE

The food of love is a sense of sin,

and a grateful sense of forgiveness.

If you and I felt more deeply the guilt of our past lives, we should love Jesus Christ better.

If we had but a clearer sense that our sins deserve the deepest hell, that Christ suffered what we ought to have suffered in order to redeem us from our iniquities, we should not be the cold hearted creatures we are.

We are perfectly monstrous in our want of love to Christ, but the true secret of it is a forgetfulness of our ruined and lost estate, and a forgetfulness of the sufferings by which we have been redeemed from that condition.

O that our love might feed itself and find renewal of its strength in remembering what Sovereign Grace has done.

C H Spurgeon

( Flashes of Thought No:508 1880)

DIFFICULT TIMES

Steadiness of mind and heart under trial, is one of the highest attainments of faith. There is little exercise of faith when all things go well. But if God raises a storm, permits the enemy to send wave after wave, and seemingly stands aloof from our prayers, then, still to hang on and trust God, when we cannot trace Him, this is the patience of the saints.

Matthew Henry

When in prosperity, we are ready to think our mountain will never be brought low; so when in adversity, we are ready to think that our valley shall never filled up. But to conclude that tomorrow must be as this day, is absurd as to think that the weather, when fair or foul, will be always so.

Matthew Henry

Oh, He is a sweet Master! One smile from Jesus sustains my soul amid all the storms and frowns of this passing world. Pray to know Jesus better. Have no other righteousness, no other strength, but only Jesus. Soon we shall see Him coming in the clouds of heaven. May you be kept faithful to death.

Robert Murray M’Cheyne

TEARS FOR SIN

Let your tears fall because of your sins;

but,

at the same time,

let the eye of faith steadily behold the Son of Man lifted up,

as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness,

those that are bitten by the old serpent  my look unto Jesus and live.

Our sinnership is that emptiness into which our Lord pours His Mercy.

C H Spurgeon

From Breaking the Silence   ( A Letter written from Menton  31/12/1891 approx 1 month before his death on 31/1/1892)

Adversity

Adversity is the best University.

Schola crucis est Schola lucis.

School of the Cross is the School of Light.
Or

The School of Affliction is the School of Instruction.

Afflictions teach us to know God, not only in His power and greatness, in His anger, and His hatred for sin, but also in His Goodness and Mercy: For God so sweetens the bitter cup of affliction that a Child of God will taste more of God’s love in one month’s affliction than in many years of prosperity.

Add to this – afflictions teach us to know God experimentally and affectionately not just cerebrally but cordially (not just with the mind but the heart) so to know Him, as to love and fear  Him, and to fly to Him as our Rock and Hiding place in the day of our distress.

He that seeks after God in the night of adversity does not seek Him to see Him, to know Him formally or superficially, but to embrace Him, lean on Him, and know Him experimentally.

Here is rich comfort for the Children of God, under the greatest afflictions.
For the best of  Saints are subject to the worst afflictions.
This is the lot of all God’s children, Christ Himself was not excepted or exempt.

Let us labour that we may reap good by our afflictions and that “the good” may abide upon us after our recovery from the afflictions.

Let us labour that the good we get by afflictions may not vanish away with our afflictions after we are recovered; so we may be able to say with David ” It was good that I was afflicted” and to say that it was good; not only after the event but to say “it is good that I am afflicted now and it will be good if I am afflicted in the future.”

We need to be good Scholars in the School of Afflictions; for if we are, God will either deliver us out of affliction with much blessing or send us to Heaven by our afflictions to our eternal blessing. Amen

THE GOSPEL IS URGENT NEWS

GOSPEL URGENCY

Have I lost the urgency of the Gospel ?

Yes ” I ” …. ” Me.”…. indeed ” MYSELF “

Not the Church, the Pastor, the Evangelist,
the young Peoples Worker, the Church Planter,

BUT ” I ” ” me ” ” myself “

Have I lost the urgency of the Precious Gospel committed to me?

Have I done anything today to make Christ known…. ?

to those dying, yes, dying in sin ?

If I walked by and saw a person sinking into the mire

only moments to live…

Would I walk on by ? Looking the other way ?

I would feel useless and inadequate for the situation ..

BUT ….. I would do something, surely !

Yet ” I ” have Family Sinking in Sin !
Yet ” I ” have Friends Sinking in Sin !
Yet ” I ” have Colleagues Sinking in Sin !
Yet ” I ” have Neighbours Sinking in Sin !

” I ”   am weak,   ……..      ” I ”    am inadequate …..

BUT the Gospel is not ….

” It is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth “

Am    ” I ”    ashamed of Gospel ”       Romans 1:16

12 disciples ” turned the world upside down “

How far has my influence for the Gospel spread ?

Where’s ” MY ” URGENCY today !!

Where’s ” MY ” Boldness in the Gospel !!

THE SECRET OF TRUE HAPPINESS

GODLINESS WITH CONTENTMENT IS GREAT GAIN

If you cannot find peace and happiness within your heart you will not find it whatever situation you are in or wherever you live.

To find true peace and happiness you need the Triune God to dwell with you: God as your Father; Christ Jesus as your Saviour, the Holy Spirit as your Guide and Comforter.

If you have this, then Bunyan’s Jail (Gaol), Latimer’s stake, Solomon’s Palace, and Dives’ condition, will not have power to remove that peace and happiness.

Whatever your circumstances, wherever you dwell, you will be content.

“Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” Philippians 4:11

MOTTO 2013

 MOTTO 2013

“I am hunting after poor sinners in these ungospelized wilds.”

In the preface to his book on George Whitefield, *1 J P Gledstone quotes Whitefield’s words above concerning his forest preaching. *2

This will make a great motto for us in the light of our Lord’s command *3

Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”

We now live a land, where the Gospel is seldom preached to sinners where they are, although it is often preached in Church’s to those who are already claiming to be Christians.

Perhaps 2013 can be an opportunity for all of us to spread the Gospel to sinners with whom we rub shoulders with every day. They are perhaps lost sheep and need to be found, by the Good Shepherd, who gave his life for the sheep.

May I wish you all a very Blessed and Spiritually prosperous New Year.

GOSPEL WORK AND MESSAGE

The Gospel Work and Message.

May the Lord guide some lost wandering souls into an area of harvest  today.

May the sickle be sharp and effective in gathering that harvest in.

May the “Fishers of Men” put the net out of the side of the boat as directed by the Lord and have a bountiful catch.

May the Good Shepherd and the under shepherd successfully seek the lost sheep today.

May the good seed be planted to bring forth a harvest tomorrow.

May the mire yield up those to be washed and sanctified in the Precious Blood of the Lamb.

May the darkness of sin be overcome with Light of the Gospel.

May the strongholds of this world be assaulted and broken down.

May the “horrible pit”  be commanded to give up some to the Salvation of the Lord.

May the day of wrath and judgement be turned into a day of peace and forgiveness for some poor soul.

May a “day of good tidings be proclaimed” and that we do well, by not holding our peace.

May the “supper” be prepared, the “wedding garments” distributed, and many be invited to “come” from the highways and byeways.

May the “pearl of great price” be discovered and all parted with to gain the eternal prize.

May the “leaven” permeate the whole lump but the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees find no growth.

May the old serpent be restricted and his poison be neutralised.

May the “dens of iniquity” be turned into the houses of the “just made good.”

May the “despised, rejected, man of sorrows” be enthroned as the Lord of Glory in hearts of stone changed to hearts of flesh.

AMEN

TRUE REVIVAL

The Nature of True  REVIVAL

To know true revival….

We need an utter dependence on Almighty God with a submission in Faith to His Will

For true revival is…..

A Sovereign outpouring of the Spirit of God in a remarkable and unusual way, in circumstances which do not ordinarily or necessarily warrant it.

The results of true revival…..

It humbles Christians, draws them to God through Christ and fills them with the Holy Spirit. It heightens their spiritual desires.

It has an effect on the World, i.e. non Christians, it give them a sense that “God is in this place” and “woe to them”, for they have not Christ,

It gives the unsaved and Christians a heightened sense of their sins and a feeling of utter unworthiness to stand in the presence of a Holy God.

Verse that show what true revival is….

Matt 19:26 seems to sum up for me what true revival is about

“But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.”

Revival is all of God, not of man. We do not look for organisation, meetings, campaigns, or the such like, we cannot organise true  revival.

A way to promote true revival…

Yes:   While saying the above though, I acknowledge that true Revival often goes hand in hand with a band or group of the Lord’s people who have been earnestly seeking the intervention of Almighty God in the current situation, faithfully engaged in prayer and seeking personal revival of their own hearts and souls.

BUT God is still absolutely Sovereign in sending forth His Spirit in True Revival

What are we to do….

Lets us seek the Face of the Lord for Revival in our own Lives firstly,

then in the Life Church that she might fully glorify God, be holy, and  set apart for the Masters use,

so that the world might be aware of the presence of God in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation.

Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee? Ps. 85:6

For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. Is. 57:15

O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy. Hab.3:2

GOD IS FOR US

GOD IS FOR US

What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?    Romans 8:31

No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.   Isaiah 54:17

While these things are absolutely true, God allows Christians (often) to suffer for their Faith, to know opposition, and to find the World, the Flesh, and the Devil to be against us.

We through much tribulation enter the Kingdom of Heaven but the Glorious things is that we do enter the Kingdom of Heaven, our enemies cannot defeat us or overcome us. The Lord knoweth how to deliver the Godly out of temptation and though our outward body perish the Lord brings us, not out of,  BUT through every situation. He is never a disappointment,

He is always by our side, as with Daniel in the Lions den and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace. He is no less with the humble Christian woman in her home, or the lowly Christian man in the work place, or the despised of this world, who have been cast out of society… He takes these weak ones and makes them mighty through Christ Jesus and the world has no true estimate of the value of God’s children to Himself or the lengths that He will go to keep them and bring them to Glory, no matter what their outward circumstances seem to be.

Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. Deuteronomy 31:6

Well this post is longer than I thought it would be, but I am passionate about the Lord’s Children being fully confident in the ability of their God to protect and deliver them in all circumstances to HIS own GLORY.

MEETING WITH GOD

The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.
He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for
ever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us
according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above
the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As
far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from
us. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth
them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth
that we are dust. As for man, his days
are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.
For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the
place thereof shall know it no more. But the mercy of the LORD
is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his
righteousness unto children’s children; To such as keep his
covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.
Psalm 103:8-18

How frail mankind ?

How great is God ?

How soon we die ?

Face the Creator !

Judge of all !

Need an advocate ?

Jesus our surety ?

Takes our place !

Speaks for us !

Sets us free !

God is satisfied !

Wrath turned away !

Peace restored !

Alive in Christ !

For evermore !

Go and tell !

Across the world !

Such great news !

To one and all !

Jesus Saves !

Have you heard ?

What to do ?

Repent and live ?

Turn from Sin !

Trust in HIM !

ONE FAMILY IN CHRIST

1 Let brotherly love continue.
2 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.
3 Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.

WELLS WITHOUT WATER

Isaac flourished at Gerar, by the blessing of the Lord,  having planted he received a hundred fold, waxed great and went forward and grew until he became very great. He had possessions of flocks and herds, a great store of servants until the Philistines envied him and sent him away into the valley of Gerar. This place was less hospitable for the Philistines had stopped up the wells that his father Abraham had digged and filled them with earth. Thus removing the possibility of supplying the need of his crops, flocks, servants, as well as his family.

For all the wells which his father’s servants had digged
in the days of Abraham his father,
the Philistines had stopped them,
and filled them with earth.

And Isaac digged again the wells of water,
which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father;
for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham:
and he called their names after the names by which
his father had called them.
Gen 26:18

This was fine, Isaac’s men dug the well and found water, but the herdmen of Gerar were not happy, they came and strove with Isaac’s herdmen, claiming that the water was their  water.  Isaac did not contest this, he renamed the well “Esek” which means “quarrel”  and moved on and dug again and found water. The herdmen of Gerar  contested this also, so Isaac renamed this well “Sitnah” meaning “hatred, hostility” and moved on. Isaac’s men then dug another well which was not contested so he called it “Rehoboth” meaning “broad places” for the Lord hath made room for us, and now we shall be fruitful.

Isaac now moved on to Beer-sheba and the Lord appeared to him in the night saying that HE was the God of Abraham his father, not to fear,  for HE would bless him and multiply his seed, for His servant Abraham’s sake.

Abimelech king of the Philistines came to Isaac saying that the Philistines had seen that the Lord was with Isaac and now wanted an oath between them, so they made a covenant together for peace. Isaac prepared a feast, they ate and drank, and in the morning rose up, confirmed the covenant and went in peace.

That’s the story of the stopped up wells, the wells full of earth, the wells without water, the wells that could not be a blessing to anyone.  I want to now try to apply the lessons of this story, spiritually.
J A Alexander wrote     “Water is a natural and common figure, for obtaining and enjoying divine  favour.”

Water, as we know, is essential for life and growth, water sustains and strengthens life, water is refreshing and reviving. This is true of physical life but it is also true concerning spiritual life, water is essential.

When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst,
I the LORD will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them.
I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys:
I will make the wilderness a pool of water,
and the dry land springs of water.
Isaiah 41:17-18

There is a graphic picture of God doing this in Exodus 17. The children of Israel were in the wilderness of Sin (Sinai), they murmured and complained to Moses because of the lack of water and God showed them ‘Grace in the Wilderness’. Moses smote the rock of Horeb with his rod and water came forth and the people did drink and were satisfied. Now the Apostle Paul himself shows us that this has a spiritual application, it was Christ that met the needs of His children, as the rock released the waters when it was struck in faith, it is Christ that supplies our needs through faith…..

And did all drink the same spiritual drink:
for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them:
and that Rock was Christ.
1 Cor. 10 :4

Unfortunately there are still Philistines about. There are those that would fill up the “wells of salvation” and block up the way to blessing with all kinds of debris. There are false prophets, who bring in damnable heresies, who cause the way of truth to be evil spoken of, who through covetousness would make merchandise of us. There are brute beasts who speak evil of things that they don’t understand. There are many with eyes full of adultery, who cannot cease from sin, who beguile unstable souls and forsake the right way and quickly go astray. How many “Christians”  live in such a way, that instead of bringing needy souls to the water of life, and leading the thirsty to the fountain of the water of  life, they thrust forth all kinds of obstacles to hinder, divert, block up that wonderful supply given by the grace of God. All these people are described as “wells without water, clouds that are carried away with the tempest. “Wells without  water” are quite useless things, bring no benefit or blessing, no refreshing, no life or growth, no sustaining power, no reviving within. Clouds might appear beneficial, have a promise of refreshing showers but yield absolutely nothing as they are blown away with the tempest.

 These are wells without water,
clouds that are carried with a tempest;
to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever.
2 Peter 2:17

Fortunately not all “Wells are without Water”, not all wells are stopped, blocked up with earth, some have been dug again and yield the Waters of Life. There are those who open up the wells of salvation, and make the water of  life available through the preaching and the sharing of God’s word. The “water” in the verse below is an intensive plural it indicates the fulness and all sufficiency of the blessings which come from these springs, says one commentator, these oasis in the deserts are life giving, these natural springs of waters are given by the goodness of God and the waters in the wells of Salvation are given by the Grace of God, and yield life giving mercy.

Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.
Isaiah 12:3

Firstly, I must ask if you are drawing “water out of the wells of Salvation” for yourself? Are you getting nourishment for your own spiritual life and growth? Why are so many Christians, weak, stunted, without depth and power, often bowed down in spiritual warfare, instead of overcoming in the Spirit’s power? They do not feed themselves with the Word, they do not refresh themselves with Prayer, they do not give themselves time to grow and develop, they do not give themselves the opportunity to be filled with the Spirit’s power. They miss out on fellowship with God and His people, they deprive themselves of the resources that are available, they never reflect upon the mighty acts of God in History, although we are mightily blessed with books, digital resources,  conferences, and lectures which are there to help us. It is with joy, real happiness, that we should be drawing “Water out of the Wells of Salvation”  but how often, our spirits, are  heavy when we come to the Word, or prayer, or fellowship, or some good book, or some other spiritual exercise. O Lord increase our “Joy in the Lord” Help us too know Peace and Joy, real Joy in our lives, that we might “Draw Water out of the Wells of Salvation” for ourselves firstly that we might then help others to draw water. We should be the means to bring sinners to Christ, to show them the benefits, to point them to life giving refreshing springs.

 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst;
but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
John 4:14

This is why “Drawing Water out of the Wells of Salvation” is so important. For if, we drink of them we shall never thirst. Once we have drunk of them, they are a life giving supply; they spring up unto everlasting life. The only way to have everlasting life is to drink of Christ, to have Him in our hearts and lives, to know the Salvation that He gives us. Then when we have this great blessing, given to us by the Grace of God, we are to bring others unto Christ, to drink of the water that only he can give. We are, as it were, to unblock the way, remove all the hindrances, re-dig the wells, that Water of Life might flow freely once again, for this how Salvation comes before the eyes of the lost. Now are you a “well without water”, “a cloud” promising much, but carried away with a tempest. A New Year is before us, with new opportunities, are you blocking up the wells or unblocking them, helping sinners to Christ or hindering them? The consequences are eternal !

However, we are not quite finished with water yet, notice the verse below.

For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them,
and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters:
and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.
Rev. 7:17

Here is a picture, which takes us into heaven itself. Here is the Lamb, in the midst of the throne, feeding his own, wiping away all tears from their eyes. These two themes are often spoken about, the Lamb in the midst of the throne and the wiping away of all tears, but, the Lamb leading His own to the “Living Fountains of Water” is not often brought before our eyes. This is in Heaven and we are still being led to living fountains of water by Christ the Lamb, what does this mean?
Let John Gill answer this,

“by “water” is meant the grace, love, and free favour of God in Christ, that pure river of water of life, which proceeds from the throne of God, and of the Lamb, from divine sovereignty; and with which the saints in this state shall be sweetly and fully solaced and refreshed; and hence they shall never thirst more: and this is said to be “living”, because not only refreshing and reviving, but because it will last for ever; the love of God is from everlasting to everlasting; and it is signified by “fountains”, to denote the abundance of it, even as it will be perceived and enjoyed by the saints now;….” Rev 7:17

and for all eternity, we shall hunger and thirst no more because we shall have a superabundant supply, being feed and led by the Lamb in the midst of the throne.

There are “Wells with Water” and “Wells without Water” : WHICH ARE YOU?

MINISTRIES NECESSITY

Necessary for Ministry

Clean vessels unto Honour are meet for the Masters use”

“They need to be emptied of self and filled by the Power of God, with the Word of God, continually”

“Yesterday’s blessing are no good for tomorrow ministry…….  no more than manna collected today would serve Israel for tomorrow” **

Nevertheless the foundation of God stands sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that names the name of Christ depart from iniquity. But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.  If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work. 2 Tim. 2:19-21

I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it. Ps 81:10

Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Matt 5:15

Wherefore let him that thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. 1 Cor. 10:12-13

Escaping from God?

Cheltenham Balloon Event 2005

You cannot escape from God’s presence.

The Christian delights to live in the presence of God.

The sinner desires to flee from God’s presence but cannot !!

Jehovah Jireh

Jehovah Jireh: The Lord Will Provide

“And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.” Genesis 22:8

Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh:  as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen. Genesis 22:14

The English word “provide” give a good indication of the meaning here.

“Provide” is from the Latin providere   –     pro- before  / videre – to see:  so means to see before in the sense of preparing for a future event.

The Lord had made a suitable provision for Abraham. Let us look at it. God tested (Not tempted) Abraham, asking him to take his only son Isaac, go into the land of Moriah, and there make him a burnt offering, on the mountain that God would tell him.

Abraham obediently took two young men and Isaac with the wood for the burnt offering and took his journey. On the third day, Abraham saw the place God appointed. See Gen. 22:1-4

I and the lad will go yonder and worship and come again to you. Gen 22:5

Here is a problem: was Abraham telling the truth? Abraham already knew he had to offer Isaac as a burnt offering! See v2 and he fully intended to be obedient. Hebrews 11:17-19 give us the answer.

By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure. Heb 11:17-19

Abraham was full of faith, believing God’s ability to keep His promises. If God asked Abraham to sacrifice Issac  Abraham believed that, God could raise Isaac from the dead. Therefore, Abraham could bring his son back after worshipping God. Isaac was the “child of promise” to elderly parents (See Gen18:11) who were past the age of childbirth. Isaac came in a sense “even from the dead” and in figure or type, Abraham received him back now.
The Puritan Thomas Watson wrote, “God is to be trusted when His providences seem to run contrary to His Promises”.  Job said, “Though he slay me yet will I trust him.” Abraham’s faith was sufficient for the situation. Is ours for the situations that surround us.

Now a question arises. (See Gen.22:7)

Isaac asks! Look fire and wood BUT where is the lamb for the burnt offering?
Abraham’s reply is not evasive but wonderful; he directs Isaac to almighty God’s control of the situation. Abraham is truthful; he wants the will of God done in this situation.

“My Son, God will provide himself a lamb for the burnt offering” Gen 22:8

Abraham’s answer satisfied Isaac so they went on together. Isaac’s relationship with his father, to me, is simply beautiful here. Isaac can question his father but accepts his answer and has nothing more to say.

They arrive at the place God appointed; build an altar together and lay out the wood, the younger man helping the older man, both in harmony with each other, despite the thoughts that must have been going through Abraham’s mind. Isaac is bound and laid on the wood, on the altar, he does not argue, force is not used, as he does not resist his fathers will. Abraham takes up the knife to slay his son according to God’s direction.
Then the “angel of the Lord” stops the proceedings. Do not harm the lad, as the “angel of the Lord” now knew that Abraham feared God, because he had not withheld his only son from Him.

Who is “the angel of the Lord?”

There is good reason to believe that it is a pre-incarnation “appearance” of Jesus Christ”. Appearance is used loosely as this “voice” called to Abraham out of heaven, twice, and was not an appearance (Theophany) of the pre-incarnate Christ in human form as in other scriptures.
A study of the “Angel of The Lord”; “Angel of the Covenant” in reference to Christ Jesus will repay your efforts.

And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. Gen. 22:13

Jehovah Jireh: God provides and Isaac is spared, a ram caught by the horns in a bush is provided, ready for sacrifice in Isaac’s place. Here is a picture of Christ’s Substitutionary Sacrifice in our place, acceptable and well pleasing to God.

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. 1 Peter 2:24

Abraham and Isaac are able to return to the two young men and Abraham’s faith was rewarded by a renewal of the promise of God.

Christ has done so much for us in His death on the Cross of Calvary, as “the Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the World” Take some time to think through for yourself exactly what it meant for Christ Jesus to willingly offer Himself and how he precisely fulfilled the Old Testament types of offerings for Sin.
The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the world. John 1:29
The big questions are;
Have we any interest in Christ Sacrifice?
Have our sins been forgiven?
Are we washed in the Blood of the Lamb?
Are we walking with Christ Jesus day by day in newness of Life?

Jehovah Jireh. The Lord Sees.   The Lord will Provide.
Ebenezer; hitherto the Lord has helped us.

Be not therefore like unto them: for your Father knows what things you have need of, before you ask him. Matt 6:8
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19

Further Study

Note 1.

Mount Moriah is in same range as Golgotha /Calvary.
The Jews say Adam and Noah sacrificed upon Mount Moriah
Solomon built the temple for God’s worship on Mount Moriah.

Note 2

Isaac as a type of Christ.

Isaac, Only Son Heb 11:17   :
Jesus Christ, Only begotten Son John 1:14 John 3:16 Ps. 2:7

Isaac carried the wood and was laid on it. Gen 22:6 & 9
Christ carried Cross   John 19:17     Acts 5:30 (hanged on a tree)

Isaac was bound.  Gen 22:9
Christ was bound Matt 27:2

Isaac showed no resistance.
Christ led like a lamb to the slaughter.

Isaac was to be stabbed.
Christ was pierced by a spear.

Isaac offered as a Lamb
Christ the Lamb of God which takes away the sin of the world

On the 3rd day Abraham and Isaac came to the mount of sacrifice Isaac offered and returned
Jesus Christ was Crucified at 3rd hour and Christ rose again on the 3rd day.

Contrast.

Abraham’s son Isaac was spared being sacrificed.
God spared not His only Son Jesus Christ.

Isaac was to be a burnt offering.
Christ was the Paschal Lamb, and the Scapegoat, taken without the camp and slain with the Sins of His people upon His head.

God’s Riches

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19

“We do not diminish God’s riches by receiving from them.”

“God’s riches are absolutely inexhaustible”

“We daily receive bounty from the Riches of God but seldom realise to what extent”

“If our thanks were proportionate to the Riches of God received we would be seldom off our knees”

“According to His Riches in Glory by Christ Jesus…..Superlative riches enjoyed by God’s children, NOW and for EVERMORE”

Jehovah Tsidkenu: The Lord Our Righteousness

Jehovah Tsidkenu: The Lord Our Righteousness

“This is his name whereby he shall be called, The Lord our Righteousness”—Jeremiah 23:6.

WE do not have to establish our own righteousness, for that is impossible, we have already sinned and come short of the Glory of God.

Even if we could be completely righteous from now on, we could not undo the sin, which we have already done.

“Jehovah our Righteousness” refers to the Lord Jesus Christ “who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree”. 1 Peter 2:24

The only way we can be “righteous” is if, God declares us righteous on the basis of the finished work of Christ.

This is called Imputed Righteousness, the Righteousness of Christ set down to our account.

We can receive this Righteousness only by Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
We cannot buy it,          barter for it,              be worthy of it,              ONLY receive it by Faith.

If we are to be Saved from the punishment of our Sins:

We must be Justified by Faith Alone in the Finished Work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

A Thought for Today

WE perceiving how Satan in his members, the Antichrists of our time, cruelly do rage, seeking to overthrow and destroy the Gospel of Christ, and his Congregation, ought, according to our bounden duty, to strive in our Master’s Cause, even unto the death, being certain of the Victory in him: The which our duty being well considered, We do promise before the Majesty of God, and his Congregation, That we (by his grace) shall with all diligence continually apply our whole power, substance, and our very lives, to maintain, set forward, and establish the most blessed Word of God, and his Congregation: And shall labour according to our power, to have faithful Ministers, truly and purely to minister Christ’s Gospel and Sacraments to his people. We shall maintain them, nourish them, and defend them; the whole Congregation of Christ, and every Member thereof according to our whole powers, and waging of our lives, against Satan and all wicked power that doth intend Tyranny or trouble against the foresaid Congregation. Unto the which holy Word, and Congregation, we do join us; and so do forsake and renounce the Congregation of Satan, with all the superstitious abomination and idolatry thereof. And moreover, [we] shall declare ourselves manifestly enemies thereto, By this our faithful Promise before God, testified to this Congregation by our Subscription at these Presents. Ist Covenant of Scotland 1557

I read this earlier today, and thought how necessary the same sentiments are needed today.

You might not agree with creeds, confessions, or covenants which are an interpretation of what the Word of God teaches us to do, but they do focus our minds and cause us to evaluate what we believe and what should be the tenor and drive of our lives.

Satan is that great usurper and is just as active today, trying to minimise and suppress God’s Word, seeking to destroy individual Christian lives and undermine the life and witness of the Church of Jesus Christ. So we need, and must have, the same dedication and single-mindedness to earnestly contend for the faith once delivered to the Saints. Without a unity of purpose in this respect we shall be become weaker and more fragmented, less able to have a real impact on the life of the nations in which we live and more importantly, among those with whom we have social interaction day by day.

I would not ask anyone to sign such a document today BUT would earnestly implore all Christians to put its sentiments into action.

What is YOUR reaction to this . Please let me know..
