Sleep helps

I believe strongly in the value of informed consent. I believe we become the best person (and especially parent) when we are making informed decisions. Different options work best for different families, different parents, and most especially different babies. Below is a compilation of resources to help baby sleep better that do not involve the "cry it out" (CIO) method.

-A letter from baby (w/ resources at the end)

Notes:
A couple topics go hand-in-hand with the topic of CIO and STTN.  One is Bed Sharing and the other is the idea of "spoiling" or "habit forming".   I have more resources on these topics if you don't find the information you need above.
Another thing to consider is that babies whose parents use CIO will often sleep more.  Not all babies, in fact research shows babies left to CIO end up crying more all-in-all than babies who are not left to CIO.   But you will hear stories from moms who let their babies CIO and now they sleep "wonderfully".   We must consider that CIO often "works" but what does this mean?  (A baby stops asking for help).  And at what cost? (Too high of one).   Is it safe? (In many cases NO).   And can we achieve the same results without letting our baby be in distress?  (Yes).

End.

I LOVE what this momma said about nursing your baby to sleep (in response to this post):
Why are you trying to get her to sleep without nursing? I know that a lot of moms feel pressured into breaking the nursing\sleep association, but I would argue that it is how babies were DESIGNED to fall asleep. I love this article.
"Some parenting “experts” recommend withholding from your baby all the comforts that would normally induce sleep, including pacifiers, rocking and allowing him to fall asleep at the breast or bottle. These same “experts” then have the opportunity to teach tough-love tactics, which attempt to coerce your perplexed, forsaken baby to sleep without any of his natural tools.

All the crying that ensues produces stress hormone releases in your baby, discouraging sleep until sheer exhaustion takes over. And after all is said and done, you are left to try to get to sleep with your own stress hormones surging through your bloodstream, as well.

The reality is that babies come with a simple and wonderful program in place for falling asleep: breastfeeding. A mother’s body passes comforting hormones into her own body and into her baby’s milk in response to the suckling. Babies release their own comforting hormones, as well, during parental contact and especially when sucking. Together, the warmth, security, full tummy, tiredness from sucking effort and comforting hormones induce sleep naturally.

Nursing your baby to sleep, whether at the breast or the bottle, is a great way to achieve these effects."
