Play along here!

This week’s word is…

Lurgy.

I have fallen foul of “the dreaded lurgy“.

I sit here a clammy, sweaty mess, gasping for breath, alternately wheezing and coughing up my poor congested lungs. Headache, constant sneezing, jelly limbs, upset tummy… you name it, I’ve got it.

Urban Dictionary provides this etymology for the phrase:

Perhaps I am from the wrong generation, but this particular clip failed to make me laugh… or maybe it’s my bad mood thanks to the lurgy?

Either way, I am more than ready for it to pack it’s bags and leave!

Ciao!

Word For Wednesday #50

Play along here!

This week’s word is…

Kerflooey!

I  just discovered this word today and love it.

It actually described me yesterday…

I started the day on an insane energy high and tore through the house on a cleaning frenzy. No place escaped my duster and wipes. I unloaded the entire contents of the fridge, disinfected it thoroughly, threw out jars that were out of date and rearranged everything. Then I turned my hand to cooking two dinners, one for the evening and one for the freezer. After that I did a load of laundry and ironing and hoovered the floors.

I made and ate lunch with every intention of returning to more housework and cooking but somewhere around 2.30 I went kerflooey!

Perhaps I just burned myself out!

It’s a great word though, one I’ll incorporate into my lexicon from now on.

Ciao!

Love Yourself Challenge #19

I have a lovely memory of a day during last summer when my sister in law visited with her hubby and her three adorable kids.

We all sat out in the sunshine on the patio and, as the ‘adults’ chatted, my nephews, niece and I had a wonderful time.

The oldest nephew was 7 at the time and fascinated by all things science and geographical. We had an overdue birthday gift for him – a light up globe and some books about geography to accompany it. He spent the day taking me on an epic journey all over the world as I quizzed him on where different countries were, before we moved on to explore the books. He read parts aloud for me, his little blue eyes wide with excitement, while the younger nephew spun the globe and called every single landmass Brazil. My beautiful niece, with her long flaxen hair and enormous blue eyes, danced around the patio singing to herself and swinging out of the parasol pole like the world’s cutest little pole dancer.

I was enchanted and amazed by these three tiny humans and think I certainly got the better deal that day than the OH, sis in law and her hubs, who talked the usual adult stuff and missed out on the magic that was happening right next to them.

It is a wonderful memory to have, for me and I hope for them too;  the day we spent playing, chatting and laughing together. I love those kids to death!

This is tough… what if I do not want to forgive them?

I might have to return to this one another day…

Love Yourself Challenge Day 17

IMG_9585

Day 17:

Uh oh… this may be TMI folks but I am currently suffering with the mother of all period pains and am losing blood at an alarming rate… we are talking serious sheet changing quantities! The chances of me doing anything beyond merely surviving today are zilch.

If it counts at all, usually I dread working out; it hurts like hell for the first five minutes and then the chemicals kick in and I really enjoy it. I usually feel great afterwards, a mixture of the endorphin high and being proud that I did it.

I know *they say exercise is great for period pains but trust me… not today!

Today *they can fuck right off!

Love Yourself Challenge #16

I am seriously struggling with this challenge and incredibly tempted to simply stop doing it. Today’s task is nigh on impossible for me. How do you write a note to yourself explaining why you are fabulous? How????

Ok here goes…

Dear me,

You have a fab sense of humour and a positive, (mostly), outlook on life – hence you are fab.

Will that do?

Ciao!

We don’t throw dinner parties in our house but I do love to play the fantasy dinner guests game – who, living or dead would you most like to have at a dinner party?

I think most people would hope for a deipnosophist! Is there a worse feeling than being stuck next to someone who is so boring you spend the evening trying to think of ways to escape?

I like to think I am a good conversationalist. I hope I am!

I think being interested in people and asking open questions about things that are important to them is an excellent way to break the ice. I often come away from a chat knowing so much about the person I have been talking to because I genuinely like to find out about people.

What else makes a good conversationalist? Along with being interested in others, a broad knowledge is a plus, as is a sense of humour.

And having the ability to hold people’s interest is key. I do love people who can tell a story well. My father in law, bless him, can make the shortest story into an epic, with detours and segues that are impossible to follow. It has made for torturous meals at gatherings, although these days we all just make surreptitious eye contact and suppress giggles as we wait for him to finish.

Most Irish people are very good at spinning a tale, which probably comes as no surprise. We have a long and rich history of being story tellers and oral history played a key role in our culture.

Who would you invite to your fantasy dinner party? Can I come?!

Ciao!

So many poems have meanings for me…

I have just spent a lovely 20 minutes sitting on my sofa flicking through some of the poetry books that weigh down the shelves of my bookcase and decided I had to settle on something from Wendy Cope…

It was hard to chose only one, but this poem has always resonated with me, probably because it reminds me of meeting the OH that night on the bridge.

(He buys me all my poetry books… one I bought for myself was “Making Cocoa for Kingsley Amis” by Wendy Cope – he didn’t know, so I now have two editions on my shelf!)
