AMWIK is a Media Association established in 1982 and registered under the Societies Act as a non-profit organization.

About us

Established in 1982, the Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) is a national independent, non-profit, membership organization for women in media. Founded prior to the UN Women’s Conference held in Nairobi in 1985, when the voices of women received little or no attention in the media, AMWIK’s vision is to see a society in which the media embraces and promotes equitable development, human rights and women rights. AMWIK’s mission is to use the media to promote an informed and gender responsive society in Kenya and Africa.

  • During a dedicated side event on sexual harassment at the Pan-African Media Summit, industry stakeholders issued a decisive call to action. Addressing the root causes of this crisis, ED, Queenter Mbori emphasized that sexual harassment is fundamentally an issue of power, challenging the industry to find effective ways to hold editors, owners, and gatekeepers accountable. A major drawback to addressing the issue is the failure of existing reporting mechanisms, which frequently expose anonymous complainants and fuel a pervasive culture of silence driven by fear of retaliation. Jane Godia, representing @WANIFRA-Women in News , shared sobering statistics from recent leadership mapping that highlight a worrying decline in women's representation. While women hold only 1 in 4 positions in media overall, their presence in Kenyan media leadership has actively shrunk, dropping from 22% in 2022 to just 18% in 2024. This disparity extends to content as well, with the latest gender tracking data revealing that women account for a mere 28% of news sources. Kenya Editors Guild President zubeidah Kananu stressed that female journalists bear the greatest burden of inequality, exclusion, discrimination, sexual harassment, and growing safety and security threats. She expressed support to adoption and implementation of resolutions arising from the deliberations and the report on sexual harassment. afromediasummit afromediasummit Media Council of Kenya #PanAfricanMediaSummit2026
