Game 38 is in the books…  The Warriors climb back to two games below .500 with a relatively close (9pts!!) win over the Chicago Bulls.  The Bulls are 18W/22L to the Warriors 18W/20L so based on record, the Warriors should have been competitive.  They were, but it was actually more competitive than the final score would seem.
The final score in this game:  140 to 131.  The Bulls led from start and scored 75pts in the first half alone (leading by 13pts at the half).  In other games, the Warriors might have rolled over and played dead.  Instead the Warriors outscored the Bulls by 28pts in the third quarter and went on to close the game with a nine point margin of victory.
Regular Season Record – (18 Wins – 20 Losses)
Game 38:  Warriors 140 / Bulls 131
Initial Observations:  The Warriors played inspired ball against the Bulls for three quarters and then hung tough to keep the win.  Despite giving up 70+pts in the first half for the third consecutive game, the Warriors fought through the half to stay close and then completed the third quarter like the Warriors of old (28+ point differential).
Andrew Wiggins was major factor in this game.  He scored 17pts, had 5 rebounds and had 8 assists and played like the Wiggins of two years ago.  Wiggins was better both ways (offense and defense), but his 3pt shooting was still hesitant and reflected in his results – only 1 of 5 successful.
Jonathan Kuminga and Jackson-Davis both played well.  Kuminga had a decent game (24pts) and managed to earn his 18th double-digit scoring game (in a row).  He continues to impress with his athleticism.
Jackson-Davis had a decent offensive night (13pts), seven rebounds and two assists.  J-D is continuing to develop and he matched well with Klay on rolls to the basket and seemed to also have a better integrated flow with Wiggins and Kuminga.
Both “Splash Brothers” had good nights.  They combined for 57pts, when their “normal” tally should be closer to 40pts.  They didn’t play all that exceptional on defense, but they looked like they weren’t quite ready to roll over and quit the season (mainly fewer turnovers).  Their timely shooting inspired the rest of the team.  Klay kept them in the game and Steph finished it.
Conclusion:  This was an important game because the Warriors played consecutive blow-out game losses without intensity – and this game could have gone very badly when the Warriors played a good first half, but the Bulls had a sharp-shooting 24 minutes to score 75 points and lead by 13pts.  IMHO the big differences were in reduced turnovers (-9: 3 to 12) and increased assists (+8:  39 to 31).
Game 39 is tomorrow (Saturday) against the Milwaukee Bucks (26W/12L) in Milwaukee…  The Warriors have actually played good teams fairly well this year.  It just hasn’t been reflected in the final scores (mostly losses).  IF the Warriors can keep the turnovers down and the assists up, they will have a very good chance of upsetting the Bucks tomorrow.
Two games left to the mid-point of the regular season…  Tonight’s win was a pleasant surprise.  A win tomorrow would be a stunning shocker for a team most of the pundits are already writing off for the season…!!  I’m up for it.
