| Game 43 (45) is in the books… The Warriors drop another and are now five games below .500 with a hairsbreadth’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers are 24W/23L to the Warriors 19W/24L so based on record, the Warriors should have lost a little more easily – and we certainly had chances to roll over and play dead. We did lose, but the game was actually as competitive as the final score would indicate and ended only after a double over time. |
|
| The final score in this game: 145 to 144 in the Lakers favor. The teams were competitive for almost the entire game – with multiple ties and lead changes. In fact, it was the Warriors who briefly held a 15 lead before the Lakers came storming back. However, IMHO: The Lakers were kept in the game by the referees to the tune of made free throws: 38 to 11(!!) on attempts: 41 to 16. |

| Regular Season Record – (19 Wins – 24 Losses) |
| Game 43 (45): Warriors 144 / Lakers 145 |

| Initial Observations: I have not seen a game so impacted by poor referees since the “Kobe” Lakers defeated the Boston Celtics back in 2010. In that game, Kobe spent the first half doing squat and the second half (particularly the 4th quarter) being superman because the refs called a foul on every Celtic who got within arms reach of Kobe. Bryant, despite shooting 6 for 24 from the field, scored 10 of his game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter. Los Angeles shot 37 free throws to Boston’s 17. |
|
| Tonight’s game was nationally televised. The refs calls were SOOOO bad, the network announcers calling the game were commenting on fouls being called and not called (particularly Lakers fouls against Steph Curry). In the refs defense, players (on all teams) have adopted professional soccer style exaggeration of spills to get fouls called. |
|
Conclusion: After two emotion filled games, I expected a major let down of effort. It didn’t happen. The scoring of 259 total points makes it seems like it was another All-Star game (“No Defense Allowed”) effort, instead of a regular season game, but that’s not really how it looked to my eyes. As stated in my last game review: “The NBA is currently set up to encourage and enhance offensive play…” Most of the time, this means three point shot attempts. Tonight was another facet: initiate and exaggerate contact to draw fouls. I don’t mind this normally – when the refs are calling both sides equally. Tonight – to my eyes – they did not. The result was the Lakers were kept in the game and they eventually won.

| Naturally, being a Warrior fan and a Lakers hater, I freely admit this year the Lakers seem to be the better team – based on record. I don’t doubt the Lakers might have won anyway if the game had been called evenly / fairly. My opinion is it wasn’t… And that’s too bad. |
|
| Game 44 is Tuesday against the Philadelphia 76ers (29W/18L) at home (SF)… The 76ers are a significantly better team than the Warriors, so we can expect the Warriors to close out this latest four game homestand with a third loss. Hopefully, it won’t be the blowout their respective records indicate it could be. |

| The scheduling of the two postponed games has been announced and is reflected on my season summary page… Golden State Warriors 2023 Season Record |
