The hard reality is that services is the fastest growing sector in the world economy, generating higher profits and good jobs.
The effort to revive manufacturing via protectionism is an effort to defy basic economics.
In a free market, people and countries are forced to specialize, moving to those things they can do best.
I quoted JD Vance earlier from a speech he gave at the American Dynamism Summit.
In it he explained that the Trump Administration would use tariffs to protect domestic industries, but he promised them lots of tax breaks and government support to innovate.
But the long history of capitalism tells us that countries and companies don’t innovate because of tax credits and depreciation.
They do so because of competition.  That is why markets work.  They force efficiency.
If you shield American companies and workers from competition, you will get not dynamism but stagnation.

Elizabeth Warren Responds to the 2024 Election

[We are in a fight for the soul and direction of American society.  This election was just a single round.  We lost a round in 2016, too.

We won in 2018 (House of Representatives), 2020 (President) and 2021 (Senate).  Now, it appears we’ve lost ground again in this election.

But we are not defeated unless we lose faith in a better America for all Americans.

People often say that in a democracy, decisions are made by a majority of the people.  Of course, this is not true.  Decisions are made by a majority of those who make themselves heard and who vote – a very different thing.

    —     Walter H. Judd

When you are told the 2024 election reflects the REAL America, remind the person telling you this that ACTUALLY only slightly over 50% of the people who voted believe it to be true, and slightly less than 50% of those who voted do not believe the election reflects who America really is.  In America, (so far anyway,) the majority vote matters and the majority of folks who made the effort to be heard have spoken.

Setting this lost election aside, we must now remain a loyal opposition…  Eight years ago, I said a prayer hoping I’d misjudged candidate Donald Trump and that he would serve the country and make us a better country – better for the majority of us, if not for all of us.  Unfortunately, my long held opinion of Trump was correct and the country was worse off when he left office precisely because he chose to serve himself and not “We the People”.

I say the same prayer now.  I hope President-Elect Trump will have a change of character and seek to create a better historical legacy than the one he established on leaving office four years ago.  Having been raised a Roman Catholic, I’ve been taught to believe in (and pray for) miracles.  Realistically, I have no expectation this latest prayer will be answered.

My secondary prayer / hope is, if Trump will not change his stripes, that he continues his life-long history of personal incompetency and that his sycophant nominations / appointments will be equally incompetent so his Administration does not destroy the Federal bureaucracy / government / economy / social safety net / environment as they are sure to attempt to do.

For now, we in the loyal opposition must remain committed to explaining what a better America might look like and we must organize and work towards the 2026 mid-terms – from this day forward.  You’ve had your three days of shock and mourning.  It’s time for a resurrection!!  Let go of your depression, stop your crying about another set back and get to work.  Every day counts…    —    kmab]
